Principal’s Page Its OK to be away ………. sometimes!
Thanks to those who completed parent surveys, 21 one in all: which makes it one of the
highest percentages in Gippsland: your opinion is important to our planning.
Attendance: perhaps not the best time to bring it up, as we’ve had so much sickness.
There are many other reasons why rural students and there families need to be away. You
may be able to add to my list : medical, domestic shopping, keeping extended families con-
nected, holidays outside work time, or, having cultural and sporting events (which urban
people take for granted.) As a school we know this and we do all we can to support stu-
dents to be at their best with their work—regardless of their attendance. The department’s
slogan Its not OK to be away’ is unhelpful I think but it is important to recognise the need
for students to be at school as much as possible.
Across the state there is a strong evidence between and students’ performances and the
amount of time they are at school.
Over times absences builds up:
1 day a fortnight = 20 days a year
= 4 weeks a year = Over 1.5 Years (P-12)
1 day a week = 40 days a year
= 8 weeks 1 year = Over 2.5 years (P-12)
2 days a week = 80 days a year = 16 weeks a year = Over 5 years (P-12)
That’s a lot of school to miss!

This account of the boats and families involved in the wattlebark trade in this
area in the 1920’s or so has been recounted by Mr John Mulligan , former
resident of Cann River, Gipsy Point and NIcholson . Johns grandparents had a
trading type business on the shore of Mallacoota Lake and he was a frequent
visitor to their home.
Wattlebark was a raw material used in the leather tanning trade. There were
large areas of black and silver wattles around the early settlements in East
Gippsland and the stripping of trees for their bark became a very handy way of
earning a bit of money for the landholders. The nearest tanneries however were
located elsewhere ( one in Bairnsdale operated until the 1950’s ) and transport
of the wattlebark in bundles was a space hungry operation. Several boats
operated along the coast , some permanently moored at Mallacoota or Eden.
Despite their length, roughly 40 to 60 feet their draft was shallow and they
utilised single cyclinder motors to manoeuvre to river banks to take on cargo
and also to navigate lake entrances such as the Bar at Mallacoota and the
entrance to Tamboon lake. Propulsion at sea was by sail.
John recounts the story of a boat owned by George Brookes / Brooks of Eden
which was of this type and in this case was , with another couple of boats, doing
some netting of fish in Tamboon Lake. A big blow was threatening and the other
boats decided to make a run for home. George with his family on board decided
to wait it out in the shelter of the lake. However the blow resulted in the
entrance to the lake closing and the sand barrier was impassable. The family
lived on board the boat for a 12 or 18 months period until the boat was able to
get out on a flood. All was well till they got out to sea when it was discovered
that the long time exposed to the river had severely weakened all ropes on
board and they had many problems with the sails on their return journey to
Eden.
During this time , the Brooks children attended Cann River School. George ,
David and Pearl were scared at night when living on the boat from the constant
howling of dingoes , a similar frightening experience which many campers
would recall today of their time on this part of the coast.
