JINDABYNE CENTRAL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 3 END OF TERM 2019 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE – FELIX BACHMANN The end of Term 3 brings to a close our winter programs, a time to reflect and farewell numerous students returning to their other schools. Having added great value to our school and spent another, or their first, year with friends at Jindabyne Central School. We would like to say thank you for the great and positive contributions you have made to our entire school community over the 10, or 16 weeks that you have been with us. We know many of you may return next year, either again as a winter enrolment and some of you even as permanent enrolments. We have loved the energy, skills and diversity you have brought with you to JCS and hope that you take away the plethora of great curriculum and extra-curricular activities you had access to, as well as, the strong values of respect, responsibility, personal best and positive interactions at JCS. This winter season, just like Mountain Biking earlier this year (over 150 competitors), has proven the continued growth and development of JCS. Firstly, congratulations to all the students on their successes. Your hard work, dedication and enjoyment shines through when we see you representing the school and challenging yourselves with your friends at JCS. This year I would also like to focus on the hard work from staff, community and parents in working collaboratively to continually grow and develop the opportunities for our students at JCS. In 2019, 566 students participated in school- run snow sports programs, equating to nearly 70% of the total student population. A significant growth over the past several years. 159 students (115 teams) competed at the Regionals, with 146 of these students (92%) qualifying for the State Championships and 83 students (57%) going onto to represent JCS at the Nationals in Mt Buller. JCS students achieved growth in X-Country & Biathlon events as well as external events such as the Scots Cup, Redlands Cup, Amelia McGuiness, World cups, Junior Nationals and the FIS Australian and New Zealand Cup. To all the staff and executive at JCS, whether directly involved or in supporting roles, thank you. Our students and school benefit greatly from your continued hard work. Our parents and extended community (over 100 individuals directly assisting on snow and many more throughout the season off snow), who tirelessly give their time as team managers, marshals, course assistants and/or gatekeepers, we could not provide what JCS does without you. Thank you for your commitment to your children and all the students at JCS. It is a fantastic example of an entire school community coming together.

Shortly departing us, for their final preparations for the HSC, are our 2019 Yr.12 Class. Addressing the Yr.12 cohort this week, a reminder to remain focussed (‘in the moment’) on the task at hand and also that the HSC does not define who you are as a person. Throughout your 13 years of schooling, and especially your schooling at JCS, that how you treat others, with dignity and respect, the constant striving to be the best you can be and have fun while you work hard in doing that, speaks louder that results or numbers on a page. If you would like to achieve something, take responsibility for making that happen. No one can do it for you, but also don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. Turn your dreams into reality, this takes hard work and mostly a lot of time, and remember have fun doing it. Below is a message that, many years ago given by a Principal from Singapore, resonated with me and still holds true today:- “The exams of your children are to start soon. I know you are all really anxious for your child to do well. But please do remember, amongst the students who will be sitting for the exams, there is an artist who does not understand Maths. There is an entrepreneur who does not care about History or English literature. There’s a musician, whose Chemistry marks won’t matter and there is a sportsperson, whose physical fitness is more important than Physics. If your child gets top marks, that’s great! But, if he or she does not, please don’t take away their self-confidence and dignity from them. Tell them it’s okay, it’s just an exam! They are cut out for much bigger things in life. Tell them, no matter what they score, you love them and will not judge them. Please do this, and when you do, watch your children conquer the world. One exam or a low mark won’t take away their dreams and talent. And please, do not think that doctors and engineers are the only happy people in the world.” Year 12 we wish you all the best over the coming months and good luck for the future, Yours in Education, Felix Bachmann
