Words from the DeanA welcome to new JIBSers and a welcome back to current students!

Dear JIBSers,

I hope you are thoroughly enjoying your summer wherever you may be spending it. If you’re on a beach somewhere

in Sweden or elsewhere, or if you are working in an office during the summer, or perhaps doing a bit of both, I hope

you are getting ready for this awesome venture that you are about to embark on.

Studying at JIBS will be one of the greatest experiences of your life. You will experience a study environment that

is uniquely entrepreneurial, preparing you for your career, and as JIBS has a modern, international setting you

will also gain friendships from all over the world that will help you further yourself in life as a student and later

on when you are a JIBS alumnus/a. JIBS is the most international university in all of Sweden with more than 1/3

international students, faculty and staff.

As Dean and Managing Director of JIBS I get to meet a lot of different types of people with the job. I meet with aca-

demics that I can share new and exciting research with; with the employees at JIBS that help enrich the multifaceted

tableau that is JIBS; I interact with external stakeholder that are so important for furthering JIBS in the world,

however, meeting young, eager, innovative and talented students is truly one of the greatest privileges of my job.

These students truly embody the international and entrepreneurial spirit that exemplifies JIBS.

So, I hope you are enjoying the summer and that you come well prepared to JIBS in the autumn. No matter if you

are a new student starting your first year at JIBS or if you are a current student returning to JIBS, I look forward to

meeting you and – JIBS and I welcome you!

The Next Generation

Mattias EnerbäckEditorial Director & Head of JIBS United Committee within [email protected]

We are in the middle of the summer, and by the middle of the summer, I mean that we are close to the start of the new semester.

This is met with excitement, as well as with anxiety for some. However, since I have heard rumours that the Kick Off and the autumn semester will be something extraordinary this year, I do hope that the excitement and eagerness now outshines the anxiety!

But it is rude not to introduce oneself…My name is Mattias Enerbäck and I am the Head of JIBS United Committee. I together with my committee provide the very magazine you are holding in your hands right now. For the students, the alumni and the personnel at JIBS.

One year ago I sat at home reading the JIBS United 2011 summer issue. I was reading about the school and people, but more importantly the Kick Off with all of its activities. I was about to start my first semester at JIBS and I wanted to get as much information as possible about everything that would happen. When I finished reading, I was very eager to start the new semester right away. This is a feeling that I want to make every new student feel as soon as you are done reading this magazine. This feeling is also the reason why I was assigned to the position as the Head of JIBS United Committee - to inspire the next generation of students here at JIBS.

The focus and theme of this magazine is therefore on you – the next generation of students – and this is your welcoming, from the current students at JIBS as well as from the JIBS United Committee.

So to all of the new students I would like to say: Congratulations! And welcome to the first day of the rest of your new life. Welcome to Jönköping International Business School!

WELCOME TO

JÖNKÖPINGJ

Writer: Mia-Berentje Land

IBS and Jönköping Welcome You!I am going to tell you a story. This story is not like any other stories. The story begins exactly one year ago. Our setting is Jönköping, a city that is beautifully situated by Lake Vättern. Our main character is a new student

who just arrived to the city. She arrives to Jönköping the night before her first day at Jönköping International Business School, or JIBS as it is more commonly referred to.

That night, she goes to sleep knowing that a new era in her life is going to start the next day. In the following week, during the Kick-Off week, everything is fun and new. The city is full of life and she meets a lot of new friends with whom she spends a lot of time together with. During this week she visits Akade-mien for the first time. Akademien is the university’s main student nightclub centrally located in Tändsticksområdet. It is situated

in an old brick house and filled with many happy students in overalls. A place where people from different cultures meet and party together. A place where you can come as you are.

On her way home from Akademien, she passes Munksjöbron together with her new friends. This particular night, the bridge is lit up with blue spotlights. The bridge spreads a blue mask on all the buildings around it and creates an amazing sight. Just next to the bridge, she sees JIBS and its majestic white front. This is the place where she will spend her next three years studying.

Many months pass by and in these months she studies at JIBS and explores the city and what it has to offer. She visits the concert house Spira and spends many hours relaxing in Stadsparken, the beautifully located city park. She walks around in Rådhusparken and

Page 9: Jibs United Summer Issue

starts to feel at home with her surroundings. These months give her a chance to realize what the word campus life really stands for.

Winter comes to Jönköping. Our main character takes long strolls through the city. Old street lamps and brick buildings meet her eyes on Östra Storgatan where the streets and the street corners are covered in snow. She feels as if she were in a city far away from Sweden, in a country with mixed nationalities and languages. She hears different langu-ages fly through the air when she passes by different groups of people. This is Jönköping for her – a place where everyone meets and connects.

Suddenly it becomes spring and the whole town is instantly covered in grass and green leafs. Passing by the school library you might see our main character studying outside the library in the sun. Every once in a while, she looks up from her books and admires the campus. She sees groups of students passing

by and hears bicycle tires sweep over the cobblestone.Right here is where we are going to leave this young woman and her story. Right here is where we are going to leave this scenery. Not because the story is finished; actually far from it. It is because this text is no longer going to be about this young woman and her story. It is about you and the story that you are going to start writing here in Jönköping. A story that describes your own journey in Jönköping – a city filled with endless opportunities. I have just told you my story about Jönköping. It is time for you to start writing your own! g

The JSA: Looking Forward and Back

önköping was an entirely different city in 1970, when the first small business education was available. The rich night-life, numerous cafes, and many student

activities enjoyed today developed as the years passed, and as such, JIBS’ Student Association, or JSA, has also evolved since its inception. The JSA is an organization for JIBS’ students, composed of JIBS’ students. Each student automatically becomes a member when stu-dent union fee is paid. The JSA currently runs several projects and events during the year, such as NextStep Career Fair, Spring Inspira-tion and Entrepreneurship Day.Its roots can be traced back to 1982, when the first business student association, Junekon, was formed. Junekon stood for Jönköpings Ekonomerna, or Jönköping’s Economists. This association, as well as the Student Union, took on a primarily social purpose, since the social opportunities at the time were lacking. Parties were arranged, and discounts were given on

things like bus fares, much as they are today. As the 1980s drew to a close, Junekon started what is today known as JIBS United, under the name Junekontakt. At the time, the student association was also under the juris-diction of the Student Union.Jönköping International Business School opened in 1994 and founded its own student union, referred to at the time as IHHJS, or Internationella Handelshögskolan i Jönköping Studerandeförening, the Swedish equivalent of JIBS Student Association. The organiza-tion grew, and meanwhile gained a focus on educational quality in addition to the social component. Operating under the Student Union was a challenge for the organization, and there was much talk of becoming an independent organization; however, because of the obligatory membership, this did not become a reality until 1994.Johan Larsson is a well-known lecturer at JIBS. He is also Director of Studies at the

Marketing and Logistics Department and holds the honorary position of Master of Ceremonies at JIBS. On top of this he is a veteran of the JSA, being involved with it back when it was called Junekon in 1992, up until 1995. Johan worked within what is known today as the External Committee, and was responsible for NextStep Career Fair, amongst other things. There are also several new developments since Johan was a JSA member. ‘Since I was active, the JSA has grown a lot and some new exiting projects like the Spring Inspiration have developed,’ Johan says. He also saw the JSA take on their new name in 1994, when English became the official langu-age at JIBS.The new English name was the one it holds today - JIBS Student Association. The orga-nization continued to change greatly over the next several years. Prior to 2001, the JSA was made up of an AISEC (the international com-mittee then) committee and two social com-mittees. Downsizing became a necessity when the meetings were too difficult to control, with so many members and committees involved. The two social committees, ReKreation and Sexmästeriet IHH, were merged into one social committee, known as Sexkreation. The AIESEC was completely removed from the association. This finally led to the association structure as it is known today, with the board consisting of 10 members with a presidium

(the president, vice-president, and treasurer) and seven committee heads, with each com-mittee having a representative on the board.Though the JSA’s mission has remained the same throughout the years - to ensure social quality to its members and give students the chance to influence their studies - today there is a specific focus on four main pillars: educational quality, career, social activities and internalization. The mission as well as the focus could change in the coming years as the school and association evolves. In looking towards the future of the JSA, President Xenia Johansson and last year’s President Alexander Wennlo see two areas that could be revised: How people are elected to their positions in the JSA board, and the nature of the board members.‘We have a fairly outdated way of electing our board through a general meeting. The general meeting as such has been a part of the JSA since its beginning. The form of the meeting works very well for smaller associations, but in a democratic sense, our members will not have much to say, and most will never turn up to a meeting. I think having an open election to a sort of JSA council of 30 people would make more sense. In that way, the people who take actual strategic decisions regarding the JSA and its future would be more involved and be more able to take good decisions,’ Alexander states. The presidium

Page 12: Jibs United Summer Issue

again in the fall semester, where each student is entitled to a voice by voting. Each meeting has its own focus: the spring meeting is where last year’s board presents the members with an annual report and takes responsibility for its contents, and the fall meeting is concerned primarily with electing new board members to fill the positions of the outgoing mem-bers. This meeting is the biggest forum for decision-making with the JSA. Any member can send in a motion, or can simply attend if they are curious as to what happens at the meetings. The JSA also has a large pull with the school. It is easy for students to feel like their opi-nions or concerns will not matter or make a difference, but with the JSA students are given a platform to voice their issues. ‘We are always here to receive both positive and negative comments from the students and we do make sure that the school is aware of them,’ Xenia says. During the spring semester, a large survey was emailed to JIBS students, as well as held in the JIBS lobby, asking for opinions on their education. The results of this will be shared with the staff. It can also be just the small stuff JSA will get involved in for the students—for example, students wanted more electrical outlets in the study areas of JIBS, and the JSA spoke with the school about it and had more installed. These are just a couple of many ways the JSA makes sure that students have a presence and a say in their education and surroundings. The JSA will naturally change and evolve along with JIBS, serving as a guide, providing feedback to the school, and giving a voice to students, but the JSA will also change with the addition of new members and their novel ideas, unconventional methods, and fresh visions. g

could then continue to be chosen via an open election, which would allow more attention to be drawn to it.The nature of the board members is the second area where Xenia and Alexander see modifications being necessary in the future. ‘The board today is a very operationally-focused board, causing the strategic orienta-tion to get lost,’ Alexander says. This results in more of a focus just on the present and the coming year, rather than a full focus on a stra-tegy of the JSA years in the future. This loss of strategic focus is why changes in the board’s positions and duties could to be examined for possible future changes. The JSA president’s role has also changed over the years. Effective last year, the president works full time, 50% for the JSA and 50% for the Student Union. Alexander Wennlo, follo-wed by Xenia Johansson, are the first-ever JSA Presidents to work full-time at their position. Previously, the JSA President had also been a student at the same time as they held the position, which did not allow the President to fully focus on their position. With this increase in the presidential respon-sibilities, a larger focus on educational quality has been introduced, as well as facilitating greater cooperation between the four student associations at Jönköping University. Coope-ration between the schools’ student associa-tions as well as between the JSA and Student Union is essential. The Student Union is the central power for students, and membership is mandatory. If that should change in the future, the JSA’s role could turn into one encompassing many of the Student Union’s current duties within JIBS.For now, students have a great way to influ-ence the JSA by way of the General Biannual Meeting taking place once in the spring and

feel that summer is around the corner. Some students are studying for their last exams this semester, while some are making the last changes to their thesis. Everyone is trying to spend as much time outdoors as their studying allows. The plans for the summer are set, with a mixture of work and pleasure. But time passes by quickly, and it will not take long before the fall is here, when old and new students once again enter JIBS.

JIBS Student Association (JSA) is an asso-ciation for students at JIBS. by students from JIBS. We work with a focus on four important issues: educational quality, career opportuni-ties, social activities and internationalization. For us, it is vital that our education has a high standard and that you as a student are ready to enter the work life when you graduate, meanwhile offering you a social life and an in-tercultural environment. Are you ready for Kick-Off 2012?!Without spoiling too much of all the awesomeness

that is waiting for you at the end of August,

I want to give you a sneak-peek of all the fun

we are going to have together.

irst of all, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you for being accepted to JIBS. The time you will spend here is doubtlessly

going to be something you will remember and cherish for the rest of your lives.

My name is Fredric, and I am the Head of the Social Committee of JSA (JIBS Student Association), more commonly referred to as Sexkreation. We are the people who are in charge of the study-social activities at JIBS, and we will be the ones to lead you through your very first week at the university – your very own Kick-Off week! Without spoiling too much of all the awesomeness that is wait-ing for you at the end of August, I want to give you a sneak- peek of all the fun we are going to have together.

Monday will start off with your roll call in one of JIBS’s classrooms, after which you will get to meet your fathers for the first time. Your fathers will be like your mentors and guides in the student life, and help you out with any questions you might have.

After you have spent some time getting to

know your fathers and the other new students in your father group, we will all meet up in the JIBS courtyard for a cocktail mingle together with members of the faculty. Here you will get to show your fancy side, mingle and have some drinks together with all of your new friends. When the evening ends and the night begins, we will move on to start our first party night together at the nightclub Club Caj.

After an awesome first day, you will be super excited about having your first real uni-versity lecture on the Tuesday. The teachers will introduce you to the first course you will be taking, and hopefully not steal all your energy, because afterwards, we will all meet up in the Munksjö Park and you will get to partake in the infamous Overall Ceremony. This ceremony is where you will get to wear your green overall for the first time, and you will be taught all the traditions and rules that are connected to it.

In the evening, you will attend your very first sittning – a student party where you will watch amazing performances, sing songs and eat good food. Once the sittning is done, all of

us will continue the party at Akademien – the students’ own nightclub!

Wednesday is known as the Inspirational Day, and the wording could not have been more accurate. You will go by bus to Kinnarps Arena, where you will get to attend truly inspirational lectures by persons whom we want to keep secret for now. It is a surprise you simply do not want to miss!

Loaded with motivation for your future studies, you will most likely be up for some partying again. Even though it is still some time to go, I want to inspire you for this eve-ning by saying Beach Party! Bring your shorts, bikinis, a hula-skirt and flip-flops, and we will dance until we sweat at Centrum Bar.

Thursday is the day when you will really get to know the city. In our City Tour, your father groups will run around central Jönköping and perform various tasks for Sexkreation and JSA’s partners in order to collect points for your group. The better the performance - the more points!

In the evening there will be a party that even Greek and Roman gods would envy –

F

Page 15: Jibs United Summer Issue

www.jibsstudents.com 15

a real Toga Party! Dress up in a bed sheet, a laurel wreath and maybe even a sword, and we will show Zeus himself how to party!

Friday is a special day! The Student Union will arrange a battle between all the different schools of the university at the beach of the lake Vättern. In this battle, new students from all the schools will compete against each other to determine which school that really is the best. Once a winner has been settled, all the students and fathers of the entire university will together go to Rosenlundsbadet and SWE – Student Water Event; northern Europe’s lar-gest pool party. Just imagine more than 2500 students partying together in pools, jacuzzis and foam tents!

After an intense week loaded with fun together with your new friends, you will get a well-deserved morning at your own disposal on Saturday. In the afternoon, we will intro-duce you to the student game called Caps. It is a very entertaining social game where you attempt to toss capsules into your opponent’s glass, while he or she tries to do the same to yours.

Continuing with the game theme, we will spend the night at Klubb Enkelt, where the theme will be Båstad – Wimbledon. So bring out your white piqué shirt and head- and wristbands, or dress up for a real summer party in Båstad – Sweden’s Riviera, and we promise you a night you will never forget!

Sunday is a day for rest and relaxation, and if anyone deserves a day off after a week like this, it is you. We will meet up at Restaurant Guvernören to feast at one of Jönköping’s finest brunch buffets together, and then you will get the rest of the day off.

The end of the Kick-Off is approaching as the school semester is officially beginning, but we still have more two days of aweso-meness together. On Monday you will have classes during the day, and we will meet up for a Sing-along with the Student Union in the late afternoon. As the night approaches, Sexkreation’s Night Missions will start. Th-roughout the night, you will conduct missions we give you in order to collect more points for your father groups. This will be the last opportunity to collect points, so make sure

you give it your all! Finally, and almost sadly, the Kick-Off

comes to and end. This will be celebrated with an evening like no other – a Finsittning where you will get to dress up and show yourself at your very best, with the men in stylish suits and tuxedos and the women in beautiful dres-ses. At this dinner, we will announce which father group that has managed to collect the most points and won the competition of best father group, and also hand out awards to the most active and involved fathers and new students.

I hope that I have given you something to look forward to. With that, I hope you will enjoy the rest of the summer, and Sexkreation and I look forward to meeting you soon.

Lots of love,Fredric GyllenstenHead of Social Committee

In mid-august there will hopefully be a lot of sun here in Jönköping and we will do like every other swede does. Be outside in the sun as much as we possibly can. A pair of sunglasses would therefore be to recommend.

The green overall, the soul of the JIBS’ers and the best piece to wear with anything during the Kick Off. A must really!

The phone booths have not been functional for quite some time now and therefore a cellphone is to recommend. Jönköping can be a big and scary place if you do not know your way around town and get separated from your father group. - Nah, not really, but a cellphone is a good thing to have though!

Money, money, money! With it, you can make a good trade for a Kick Off – kit, food, beverages and silly hats! Bring money friends! The towels that Ken wears are actually “CAPS

towels” – but more about that later. It would probably be a good thing to own at least one towel for the CAPS-tournament during the Kick Off week. This game has a tendency to make your hands soggy.

A big and cozy shirt is a key ingre-dient to your survival. It provides you with warmth during those cold night missions and other nighttime events…

A can of whichever beverage you like the most is another thing that is really necessary for your survival. You will be up late nights and outside a lot so a lot of water needs to be consumed! - That is at least the beverage I would recom-mend! Lots of it!

Bring a smile and your best mood for the Kick Off week! You will meet a lot of new people and friends so to be happy is to recom-mend!

Monika Kylli

”How to succeed inyour career”

Monika Kylli, is a JIBS Alumna and graduate of the Business Law with International Orientation programme. Monika is a true entrepreneur and founder of Monika Kylli Emballage & Handel, Sweden’s main distributor of environmentally friendly mailing bags. She is also the owner of Penquin Design, an online based jewelry store with handmade and unique designs.

Tell us a bit about yourself and the time after graduation.

The road has not been straight forward. When I graduated in 2002, it had become tougher to get a job without previous expe-rience. Competition was hard. After applying for several jobs, the thought of doing so-mething on my own started to grow, however, I was waiting for the right idea. Since I had studied law, I had read many cases where things had gone wrong. My knowledge in business law has definitely been an advantage for me and helped me to avoid many of these mistakes.

While studying at JIBS, I was very focused on the impact of the Internet and Electronic Commerce on the laws, anyone in my class would probably tell you the same. I even wrote a thesis on the subject of electronic of-fers and accepts.

Knowing business law gave me courage to proceed, helped me through the initial nego-tiations and worked out ground rules in how my business should be run.

How do you view the job market and entrepreneurial opportunities in Sweden?

I feel that the problem for many graduates is that they, just as myself, lack work expe-rience. The question is how to get that when you don’t get a chance in the first place.

For me, the answer was to create my own job. In Sweden, there is plenty of help to get you started once you have an idea. I got in contact with ALMI, a company focused on how to start a business. I actively participated in their mentorship programme. There is also a possibility to get financial support from them in the form of loans. I have no expe-rience of the latter since I started my business without any external financial aid. I started out small with just a few sizes and only two

colors of mailing bags, today I have a great variety of sizes and colors.

Apart from ALMI, there is also help available from Nyföretagarcentrum amongst others.

What is your normal working day like? In other words, what are your tasks and responsibilities? What does an entrepreneur do?

I am not sure that there is anything like a normal working day. I run my business on my own; I have no co-workers to share tasks or responsibilities with. I am the main distribu-tor of environmentally friendly mailing bags in Sweden.

I work a lot on marketing, as many com-panies still don’t know about these bags and their advantages over other packing material, including paper and boxes.

To market myself is only one part of what I do. Other important things are to manage the stock, place orders to refill, answering a lot of e-mails, pack orders, and book transport. Sometimes I visit the appropriate exhibitions.

I am sitting on all the chairs. I have respon-sibility for all parts of the business and I like it as it gives me full control of everything.

Apart from my packaging business, I also run penquindesign.se. There, I sell necklaces, earrings, and other jewelry of my own design, all handmade by me. I feel I need to have a creative side in my work.

Looking back at what you have achieved, how would you answer the question ‘’How can a person be suc-cessful in their career? Or How can you succeed in establishing your own business?”

Sometimes you have to think outside the box, and bear in mind that things don’t always go as planned. I did not plan to start a

business; it just turned out that way. Although it is sometimes lonely to have a one-woman business, I don’t regret doing it.

Monika Kylli Emballage & Handel has existed for 4 years now. I started out small, took no loans, and re-invested a lot in my business from day one. It is important to have a clear idea of what you are going to do and what policies you shall have in important issues such as returns or lost goods. In these respects, I am grateful for my Business Law Degree.

The work you put into your business before actually starting it is essential. The more you have thought things through, the more prepared you will be.

There are a lot of fraudulent companies trying to sell their so-called services. Always ask to get their offer in writing, i.e. e-mail. If they cannot provide you with that, something is not right.

Can students/alumni contact you through an e-mail to ask career related questions?

They can contact me via e-mail ([email protected]). I am still ”young” when it comes to running a business so I might not have answers to all of their questions, but I will do my best! g

Whatwasyourfirstjobafter graduating from JIBS?

Graduating from JIBS I got two job offers, one working for the Swedish Trade Council in Paris, France, and the other working as a consultant for IBM Global Business Services in Sweden. I decided to accept both. I worked for six months in Paris until the graduate program at IBM started later in the fall of 2005. At the Swedish Trade Council, I had the chance of working with market analysis and market entry strategies for Swedish companies wanting to enter the French market. It was really interesting and a very good opportunity to stay abroad for a while before going back to Sweden and joining IBM. After my studies, I wanted to broaden my experience by working closer to the intersection of business and technology, so I joined IBM’s SAP-practice. This was a great opportunity for me to learn a business from the inside through a process perspective, and at the same time work in an international environment with large com-panies centralizing and standardizing their business and operations across the world. What did you like best about studying at JIBS?

JIBS has a very good management, strategy and organizational development faculty, which has been a great basis for me

in continuing working with these questions as a management consultant. The best aspect studying at JIBS, however, is the international profile and the vast opportunities to both study abroad and create connections with all the international students coming to JIBS to do parts of their studies in Sweden. It creates a great atmosphere and the possibility to get international experience that is highly valued entering the world of business.Did you spend time abroad as part of your program of study, and if so, how was that time valuable for your personal development?

I joined JIBS very much for the internatio-nal opportunities. As a part of my studies I completed one semester at l’ESSCA in Angers, France. When going there, I had already deci-ded to apply for a French internship through my school in Angers, which was successful. I got an internship working for one of the lar-gest French stock-broker firms based in Paris, in their marketing department for 6 months. It was a really good job and a chance to get more experience on my CV than merely sum-mer jobs at the bank back home. As a result from taking one semester off to do the intern-ship in Paris, I had one semester left when my fellow classmates graduated from JIBS. Therefore, I decided to do my last semester at Texas A&M University at the graduate department. All the international experience from studying at JIBS has been very beneficial for me. Not only did my international back-ground open up many career opportunities but also I learned a lot about myself and now have friends in many parts of the world.

During your time at JIBS, did you already know which industry you wanted to work in upon graduation?

The industry perspective has never domina-ted my choice of work, but rather I knew quite decisively that I wanted a challenging job with the opportunity to deal with central and com-plex problem-solving at the heart of business, management and organizational development. The choice to pursue a career within mana-gement consulting was a non-issue for me. It was more a question of how to build expe-rience of how businesses work in real life, and getting the experience I have today to work with the executive leadership teams of various companies to solve the problems that are on top of their agendas. What is it your current company does?

I have been working for Connecta for a year now. Connecta is a Swedish consulting firm offering services within management consulting, enterprise consulting and digital consulting. Connecta works with the mana-gement teams of some of the largest Swedish companies, supporting them to transform the points on top of the management agenda into reality by combining expertise within business strategy, technology and business transforma-tion.What is your position within the company and what are your main responsibilities?

I work as a manager within strategy and bu-siness transformation with the main responsi-bilities of supporting our clients develop their strategic direction and executing it, transfor-ming their businesses into even

T

Page 28: Jibs United Summer Issue

more successful ones adapting to changes in the environment. My main area of expertise is strategy formulation and execution, strategic target setting, developing target pictures, and programs transforming the business towards their future goals. I also have the responsibili-ty of developing Connecta’s own business with new clients and broadening the Connecta footprint within our existing clients. What does an ordinary day in the officelooklikeforyou?

My work is very broad and diverse, which also reflects in my agenda. A regular week I spend approximately 3-4 days out on client sites, working in different project teams consisting of both employees from the client as well as consultants. My current assignment is a business development project developing energy solutions and business models of the

future energy system. The rest of the time I meet with new clients discussing their main challenges, work on developing our latest point of view within strategy, or perform qua-lity assurance reviews to ensure quality in the work that we deliver to and with other clients. My work is a mix of meetings, carrying out own analysis, preparing presentations and working with our project teams to ensure that we together are creating results on time and on budget.Where do you see your personal development in 5 years from now?

Within five years I think I will be working with similar questions with even greater responsibilities, solving complex problems for the most successful companies in our Swedish business world. I really like the chal-lenges of being a consultant, but maybe one

having good grades etc. is valued, but they have turned into basic requirements. Compa-nies today are hiring their future leaders and they are looking for self-motivated people that can show personal leadership and integrity and have understood that in order to be suc-cessful, you need to work with and through others. Social competency and the ability to build relationships are therefore getting more and more important. How high do you rank the importance of networking?

Speaking of which, how you build your own brand and network has had an increased importance. It sounds a bit clichéd, but thinking of what you want to be remembered for and why people should think of you in a certain situation, e.g. for a new assignment, a promotion or maybe a new job, and actively communicating that in your network, is key for career building. This is not to be confused with excessive self-promotion, which is not accepted in Sweden, but rather thinking about what you want to do, what you are good at and communicating that in your network. People like people with skills, interests and experiences and you gain a lot yourself by mutually sharing it with others. Are there any career decisions you have taken that you regret or that you would consider taking differently today?

No, I do not make sloppy decisions, so my important decisions have all been thought through carefully. Of course I have made decisions in my work that have changed the path of my career and maybe I could have been even ‘higher up the ladder’ if I would have made some decisions differently. For me, however, career development and being suc-cessful has not been about the title or number of steps up the hierarchy, but about develo-ping my own skills, expertise, and experience. Mainly within the areas that lie closest to my heart and achieving great things together with others. What you think is fun and what makes you tick also gives you energy and makes you more prone to be successful.

day it could also be interesting doing your own homework and being responsible for the business development of a larger company. For me, professional development is very much linked to personal development, which is my main driver. I want to continue learning and using my experience to create results wherever I am. Of course, developing with our clients also means developing within the company of Connecta, and in the end taking on new responsibilities, maybe as an account manager or responsible for an industry. What do you think is it companies look for in today’s business school graduates?

My experience is that companies are looking for people with a drive and a sense of wanting to create results in order to achieve something more. Of course being smart,

Understanding your own personal drivers is key to be successful and not having to regret past decisions!Have you ever considered starting your own business rather than working for a company?

I have worked for companies of many sizes and right now I want to continue working with large companies with important future challenges. Working for a smaller company or even starting my own business is, however, so-mething that I would like to do someday. The thought of working for yourself and creating something on your own is appealing to me. Moreover, starting a business where you are not bound to an exact location of the business would be interesting in the future, allowing relocating yourself to wherever you want. This topic comes up at the dinner table every once in a while I must say!Do you have a few words of career advice for the readers and prospective JIBS graduates?

It is sometimes hard to know exactly what you want. By exploring and identifying your personal drivers and motivational factors, you will make sure that whatever challenge you take on it will be fun. Having fun and getting energy from your job is important. There is never enough time to do everything you want, and you will always struggle with all must-dos. Thus, ensuring that you like what you do is a must in order to have a well-balanced and joyful life.Is there anything you would like to add?

A piece of advice to all the female gra-duates out there is to do the ‘male colleague test’. When applying for a job, accepting a promotion or new responsibilities, or making important career decisions, think how you would act if you were one of your male col-leagues. Would you think that you are not perfect for the job? Would you think that it is too challenging for you? Probably not. g

tanding for the contemporary and artistic heart of Jönköping, the concert hall of the new cul-tural center represented the ideal location for the 15th anniversary of the fashion show Spring Inspi-

ration, held on Friday, the 27th of April 2012.

Organized by students from Jönköping Bu-siness School Student Association (JSA), this year’s Spring Inspiration fashion show was inspired by the four elements: earth, water, air and fire. Each and every outfit running down the catwalk was dedicated to the guiding theme of “Four elements – Fashion for life”. The one and a half hour fashion show was as diverse as the four elements themselves: Kicking off with an outstanding body painting creation, a variety of different creations were showcased throughout the show such as a wedding dress collection entirely made of materials from IKEA by designer Malin Ortmann or a children clothing collection

from Llandlo presented by the young-est models of the evening. The Spring Inspiration’s collection pieces came from various designers and local fashion stores each presenting five to ten outfits on the catwalk accompanied by visual slideshows and trendy DJ tunes. Forty five talented female and male amateur models presented the fashionable outfits, ranging from casual street wear, elegant evening gowns to sexy underwear and colourful swimwear collection pieces. The designers participating with their creations were F.S Design, CAJS Underwear, Malin Ortmann, Alexandra K and Angelica Olai. Among the local fashion stores that contributed their spring collections were Ola-gas Hus, Så in i Norden, Saint Tropez, Esprit and Myrorna. Prior to the fashion show, a “Spring Day” was organized at JIBS giving the designers, fashion stores as well as sponsoring companies the opportunity to present them-

selves and their products towards fashion interested students for a closer look. A highlight of each year’s Spring Inspiration is the presentation and award ceremony of the annual design competition. Every year, a design competition is initiated in the course of the Spring Inspiration fashion show, giving emerging design talents the chance to come up with outstanding design sketches in order to pave the way for a potential career within

fashion design. By giving rein to their crea-tivity, the talented participants of the 2012’s design competition inspired themselves by one of the respective four elements.

Out of a pool of forty designer newcomers, the four designers with the most promising creations were chosen to present their designs for the first time on the catwalk of Spring Inspiration. Olivia Alm, Susanna Holm, Sofia Wessberg Claesson and Anna-Karin Friberg were the finalists selected to present themsel-ves and their designs during the fashion show. Sofia Wessberg Claesson’s creation inspired by the element air emerged as the winning design of the evening and she describes her inspiration for the best design sketch as fol-lows: “I have chosen the element air! I wanted a light and airy dress with very elaborate decorations and details, which did not make the selection of elements very difficult. My inspiration I first received from the materials. I wanted to use feathers and light chiffon fabrics.” Sofia received a sewing machine from Husqvarna allowing her to put future design inspirations into fashion reality.

The sold out Spring Inspiration event at Spira was hosted by Bojan Radevic, who led through an entertaining and fashion dedica-ted evening. The fashion interested audience was not only able to enjoy one of the largest fashion shows in Sweden but also given a live performance by the band Panda Da Panda. During the break, the guests of the Spring In-spiration event had the opportunity to mingle a little bit in the open foyers of Spira and dis-cuss the latest trends and styles of the fashion show while benefiting from a stunning view.

All in all, a team of ninety people consisting of designers, models, hair and make-up teams as well as the twenty three committed students of the project team worked behind the scenes and made this Spring Inspiration evening a successful fashion event to remember. “I believe that thanks to a very well-prepared and enthusiastic crew, Spring Inspiration 2012 has become a great success”, sums up Bart Berende, member of the Spring Inspiration crew and student of JIBS.

Before the Spring Inspiration event moved on to the after party, each fashion show guest received a souvenir in form of a goody bag. The successful Spring Inspiration evening was rounded up with a stylish after party at Karlsson Salonger where designers, project team and fashion interested people celebrated together until the early morning hours. g

’Studentplaza.se is an informative platform and Jönköping’s biggest

guide for students, by students’

In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for entrepreneurs. Many schools have

expanded their social entrepreneurship programmes, and JIBS is not an exception. There

are a lot of opportunities ready to be explored while studying at university level. In this article,

we want to show you that ‘entrepreneurial’ and ‘international’ are not just adjectives describing

ouruniversity’squalities, butaretruereflectionsofthings happening on our students’ horizons.

ave you heard about Studentplaza.se? This is one of the successful examples of JIBS’ entrepreneurial spirit. It all started out as a course project

and eventually became a business idea. Studentplaza.se is an informative platform and Jönköping’s biggest guide for students, by students. Nowadays modern students are equipped with computers, laptops, smartpho-nes etc., meaning that following social media is easier than ever before. Studentplaza.se is the source that brings it all into your hand. Students are probably the most active people; they have tight schedules and are always pressed for time, so it is no surprise that they

forget things or events. On Studentplaza.se all you need is one click to find all upcoming events and their descriptions. You can also find information about Jönköping’s clubs. Had a good time out? Check out the section with pictures from the nightclubs and maybe you will find yourself captured in one. Not only pictures from the clubs but also different events that takes place in Jönköping, a num-ber of articles, interviews, and much more can be found on the webpage. Now back to the starting point. In the autumn of 2011, a new wave of first year students arri-ved to Jönköping. Among those students were the crew members of Studentplaza.se: Victor Ödmark, Ida Zedenius, Rebecca Dumont, and

H Olle Hugosson, who all chose to study Inter-national Management (IM) at JIBS, and Linus Bergquist, a second-year IM student. Charged with good emotions after a kick-off week, they finally began their first course: Entrepreneur-ship and Business Planning (EBP). In this course, students get a chance to explore their entrepreneurial skills, as a new venture crea-tion is a part of the EBP course. This is how the ground for Studentplaza.se was set. Starting university is a life experience and many students want to keep track of their memories from university life. “We all missed pictures of the kick-off week“ says Victor Ödmark, who is the Head and Publisher of Studentplaza.se. The primary idea was to

capture pictures and everything that was going on during kick-off week. One of the al-ternatives was to make a paper version of Stu-dentplaza.se. However, there was not enough time for printing and publishing a magazine, so they decided to create a website. Good idea, good start, the milestones were set, but all the hard work awaited ahead. It was a challenging project because the crew members had to set up everything. None of them had dealt with running a website before; however, some of the crew members had relevant experience. Before coming to JIBS, Victor ran his own company, and Olle had DJ experience. His playlist can be found on Studentplaza.se under the name Herr O. Linus also ran his own company and appeared to be a good programmer. Ida and Rebecca had good social skills, therefore they promoted Studentplaza.se and looked for potential customers. After listing the company on the stock exhange, the development of the website began. The roles were divided: Victor became responsible for publishing, Ida for events, Rebecca for sales, Olle for marketing and interviews, and Linus for finances, web design and establishing a listed company. When asked if they received any help, Victor says that they did the most of the work by themselves. However, they used the opportunity to contact Jönköping Science Park, where you can get support and assis-tance when starting a new venture. Here, they received useful contacts. With the assistance of the Science Park, they were connected with a lawyer, who helped in drawing up the legal documents for Studentplaza.se. To make the idea work, they needed to attract viewers to the webpage. The target group was JIBS’ students.‘’The dilemma at the beginning was how to attract viewers and get

advertisements for the website. We needed to show that we had visitors so the companies would be willing to advertise on our webpa-ge“, says Victor. Sponsors were important for the website’s take off. Victor states that at the beginning they went to the clubs and started taking pictures to put on the website. Recent-ly, they have employed Fredrik and Sebastian, who are responsible for taking pictures. So far, Studentplaza.se is running success-fully. However, the members of Studentplaza.se are not giving up on improving the features of the webpage. After Christmas, the webpage was re-launched. For that reason, the website attracted 15000 views, which was more than the primary goal of 12000. When asked if they perceive running a website as a job or a hobby, they all agree that it is fun and more like a hobby than a job. However, it is not as easy as it sounds. Maintaining the webpage is time consuming and it takes approximately 10 hours every week to upload pictures. But it se-ems that the team enjoys what they do. Victor also reveals that they have plans to expand to other cities. To wrap it up, Victor suggests that all students try new things. Studentplaza.se is an example of such a task, which seemed time consuming and challenging at the beginning, but after all it was rather rewarding. One can always use the collaboration skills gained when working within a group. The last tip, but very useful one! Student-plaza.se would be happy to help to promote any JIBS events. Anyone who has ideas or needs some promotion is welcome to contact Studentplaza.se. All crew member contacts can be found on the Studentplaza.se website. g

im Löfgren, 32, is a JIBS Alumnus who graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Ad-ministration. Jim is originally from Stockholm, but now lives in New York with his wife and their son. He is currently the Vice President & Brand Manager at OneStopPlus.

com, the largest online plus size fashion mall and marketplace in the United States.

In 2002, after having studied two years at JIBS, Jim took a leap towards new opportunities at London School of Economics, where he obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Ac-counting and Finance. In 2004, he completed his second post graduate degree with London School of Economics, graduating with a Master of Science in Management, but this time also having spent six month with HEC in Paris. After finishing his studies he was on the verge of going into finance and invest-ment banking in London, but an attractive opportunity came up and led him in another direction, something he is happy for today.

“In retrospect, it was important for me to learn how to manage a business before looking at one from the outside. It is difficult to accura-tely build a financial analysis with today’s complex and nuanced business fundamentals, unless you’ve actually been running a business yourself ”.

The appealing opportunity came in the form of an internship at Redcats in Paris. Redcats is a group of commercial companies specialized in international online fashion, including La Redoute, Ellos and OneStopPlus to name a few. As part of the Masters of Science at London School of Economics, Jim had to complete an internship abroad and thus saw this as a chance to acquire more experience and practical knowledge of the business envi-ronment and for this reason took the offer. In 2005, Jim was offered a permanent position as Head of Business Development in the Nordic region at Ellos, an online fashion retailer lo-cated in Borås, Sweden. Jim has stayed within the group ever since. “Basically they have not let me go since then”, he says.

Ten months subsequent to his appointment, Jim was promoted to Director of eCommerce and Business Development at Ellos, where his focus was to redesign and develop both online marketing and IT-platforms. In 2008, after his recognized successes within Ellos, Jim was once again promoted - this time to CEO for the sister brand La Redoute Nordic. As CEO, he oversaw the entire business in the Nordic region for the La Redoute brand, in-cluding branding, marketing and PR as well as logistics and distribution. He also managed to launch the business in Denmark and Finland.

In 2010, Jim was headhunted to New York where he upholds his current position as Vice President/Brand Manager at OneStopPlus.com. OneStopPlus.com is one of the largest online

J retailers for plus size apparel. “In the United States solely, the plus sizes is worth seventeen billion dollars in terms of market size. Over 60% of women in the United States wear a size 12 or larger. It is a huge market!”

According to Jim, OneStopPlus is a pure online business where all the products are aggregated from different online retailers, having all the products on one website with a single checkout. OneStopPlus is then marketed to the end consumer in order to get the consumer to visit OneStopPlus.com and place orders on the website. The items are then shipped from multiple warehouses from multiple brands directly to the end consumer.

When speaking with Jim, it becomes obvious that the reason for his successful career lies in an enterprising and hardworking drive with an ability to see opportunities rather than obstacles.

What does an ordinary day look like, what are your tasks and responsibilities?I basically oversee everything we do as a brand or retailer. I make sure that we source new products and new brands, and that we connect them to OneStopPlus through our eCommerce platform. I oversee all the marketing that we do, ranging from our brand positioning, to online advertising and TV advertising. I make sure that the customers are happy through measurements of customer satisfaction. All in all, I make sure that we are growing and profitable.

What was the best thing about stud-ying at JIBS?I guess the best thing was the international component which is very strong at JIBS. The connection you got with inbound exchange students was a very positive experience. I also believe that the outbound exchange and all the options of going abroad and studying is a key foundation for a successful career. It leads to personal development and JIBS definitely excels in this area. Most of my best friends today are people I either met at JIBS or people I met when studying abroad. To what do you attribute your success after your studies?

It is basically a multiplier with three key components. You multiply the hours you put in with your efficiency and creativity. If you manage to achieve in all three of these parts, reaching success is definitely attainable. And in business, to some extent you always need to be part of the solution and not part of the problem.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?Hard to say. I take it one year at a time, and in a year from now I believe I will still be in New York working with eCommerce. However, at some point in my career I would like to own what I work with, rather than work for someone else, but I have no rush to go there right now.

Was the idea of one day running your own company something you had in mind during your studies? Obviously, with JIBS being an entrepreneurial university?Yes, of course. JIBS has done a great job of fostering the entrepreneurial spirit. I think that the entrepreneurship focus could have been even stronger. I remember that there was only a certain amount of people who tried their luck with the incubator experience (Jönköping Science Park) and I think it could benefit JIBS and its students if more people partook in that type of experience. At the time of my studies, there were some successful companies which were incubated at JIBS that are successful and growing even today. More start-ups in the incubator would definitely be good for everyone!

As an employer, what is the key as-pect you look for when applying for a position within your company?I do not look at grades. I would like the can-didate to be all-rounded, smart, and business savvy. As a student you should know what the profitability of the industry is. Therefore you should definitely do research about the com-pany you are applying for. By research I do not just mean reading about the company on their home page, but actually going through the process of trying out the product that the company is selling. From this you will gain valuable input. You should be curious about the company and what the drivers of the busi-ness are. Businesses are much more nuanced than one could think. A general curiosity and business savviness is therefore what I look for.

If you could give one piece of advice to a JIBS student, what would that be?I would recommend that you get good intern-ships to base your business experience on. I think good internships are available wherever you look; you just need to either find them or create the opportunities. g

Mentoring ProjectsProvide Contacts that Lead to JobsLawstudentshavedifficultiesfindinginternshipsduringtheirstudies.Thereisaunion, calledJusek, for professionals and students active within the areas of law, economy, human resource and information system. Jusek has performed a study which shows that three out of four students did not have any internship at all during their studies. However, in Jönköping there is a mentoring project for law students, which has shown to be successful.Writer: Mattias Niinisaari Photo: Selma Omanovic

’I have spoken to someone who during many years has been active within an area I am interested in. Now I am ready for working life,’ Johanna Bratt says, who has participated in the project.

Two out of three who have had an intern-ship as a part of their studies claim that it was important for their present job. Jusek’s investigation shows that contacts are the most common way of getting the first job after graduation.

Jusek has started a mentoring project as an attempt to facilitate students contact with working life. The project is located in ten different cities and Jönköping is one of them. The mentoring projects help students to gain contact with professionals. The student is simply provided with a person to speak with

and discuss questions regarding working life. ’We are aware that many students lack con-

tacts within the business they wish to work. There are many questions to be answered about working life and how to achieve their goals and how to get to the business they are interested in,’ Mattias Niinisaari, a student representative at Jusek, says.

In the mentoring project, one student and one professional are matched. The mentor and the professional meet 6-8 times to learn from each other. During these meetings, the men-tor and the professional exchange experience and ideas and make contacts for the future.

Sometimes the project leads to the first job after graduation. This year the project had 20 professionals and the same number of students.

Participate to gain important contacts Johanna Bratt heard about the project

from a friend. She saw it as an opportunity to gain personal contacts within working life, something many students have difficulties to find in other ways.

’After participating in the mentoring project I feel more ready for working life. It has provided me with an opportunity to speak to someone who during many years has worked within an area which I am interested in,’ she says.

for law students in Jönköping and during the previous year he had been Johanna Bratt’s mentor. He thinks that it has been rewarding for both parties.

’Something that has struck me is that the students often are good and have good analy-tical skills. It is impressive.’ Peter argues that sometimes it has been a way of finding new talent among the engage students at univer-sities.

Johanna Bratt states that her mind has opened to working at an authority such as the administrative court of appeal.

’Another benefit is that it provides me with a good reference for the future, this will be valuable and help me in the search for a sum-mer job.’

Peter Lihuvudh and Johanna Bratt agree

‘Contacts are the most commonwayofgettingthefirstjob

after graduation’

that it is necessary with a good match of students and professionals in order for it to be a successful exchange between them. Peter Lihuvudh states that it is important that there is a clear agenda for each mentoring meeting and that something concrete is discussed during each meeting.

Peter Lihuvudh finishes by stating that it has been rewarding to meet brilliant students and gain input in how the program works today. g

Entrepreneurship DayJönköping and JIBS are renowned for their emphasis on entrepreneurial research and most of you will get a taste of this in your very first course at JIBS, “Entrepreneurship and Business Planning”. Entrepreneurship Day, an event held once a year in the fall term, is the day in which students get to showcase their entrepreneurial ideas and businesses that were created during the course. Also during the day, there will be entrepreneurial guest lecturers and representatives from Science Park available to discuss and talk about any business ideas that you may want to fulfill during your time in Jönköping.

Spring InspirationRecruitment for Spring Inspiration Fashion show starts after kick off. This is one of the largest projects we have and the Fashion Show is Jönköping’s largest. If you are interested in Fashion, Design, Art or Management, don’t hesitate - apply for a position!

RECAP: RECENT EVENTS FOR JIBS ALUMNI

WINE TASTING EVENING

JIBS Alumni gathered to explore famous wine countries and their wines at Kungliga Myntkabinettet in Stockholm. Once again, it was a suc-cessful event for which the participant list was filled in nearly one day. One of the evening’s participants received a bottle of wine as a “thank you” for

JIBS ALUMNI ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AT GRAND HÔTEL

By the time this magazine issue is out and in your hands we will have had the largest event for JIBS Alumni so far - Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2012. The theme of the event was ”Future”, with selected speakers to signify it: Johan Roos, the new Dean and Managing Director of JIBS, Magnus Bratt, Founder and CEO of Mira Network, and Camilla Ljung-gren, CEO of Business Challenge, named one of Europe’s best entrepreneurs and a JIBS Alumna.

The event took place at the classic Grand Hôtel in Stockholm – one of the best known addresses in Stockholm which has hosted such celebrities as Martin Luther King, Frank Sinatra, and Greta Garbo, to mention a few. It could happen that someday one of the 80 par-ticipants´ of AGM name appears next to other big people who have visited Grand Hôtel. The evening continued with an after party at Café Opera.

signing a new member up for the net-work. We will continue having social evenings with something extra added to them. After all, ”Good wine needs no bush,” especially when it is tasted together with fellow JIBSers in a charming environment. Do you agree?
