Being a bride can be challenging. Planninginvolves a lot of work and a lot of emotions. Its nice to know other brides have beenin your sparkly wedding shoes before you.

Want to know what went well? What deserved ado-over? Read on as four recent brides dish on theirweddings and share their big-day advice.

    LALLIE AND RUSSELL

For their May 2014 nuptials, Lallie and Russellremembered their wedding was about the joiningof two people and not the small details. The briderecommends keeping the guest list under 100.

Keeping it smaller made it possible to speak to

everyone and made it more intimate for our guestsas well, she says.

They married at a private home in North MyrtleBeach, South Carolina, followed by a brunch recep-tion at a nearby restaurant. The brunch was afford-

able, and the early celebration gave the couple andtheir guests time to enjoy the day. The brides andgrooms friends hosted an afterparty that night at alocal bar.

Still, Lallie would have changed one thing: nothiring a professional photographer. She hired afriend of a friend and realized after the weddingthat the photographer wasnt a pro.

I wish I had more photos to look back on andremember the day, she says.

Luckily, Russells and her friends shot some goodphotos to supplement what the photographer shot.

Lallies Tip: This is about you and your futurehusband and the rest of your lives together as amarried couple. ... Seriously, dont sweat the smallstuff.

    ASHLEY AND COLLIN

Ashl ey and Col lin mar ried inSeptember 2013 in a formal barn

    wedding, in New Yorks HudsonValley.

The bride wore a customKathryn Conover dress that cost$3,000, a huge savings, sincemost of the bridal store dressesAshley liked were over $8,000.

Ashley and Collin served foodthey liked, such as passed bites, craft beers, and local meats. They didnt have a wedding cake, either. They instead served acheese plate for dessert, becausethat is how we always end ameal when we have date nights.

They also saved money byhaving Ashleys mother craft theflowers.

My mom exchanged her timeand volunteered to help out ofher local floral shop in exchangefor learning how to make flowercrowns, bouquets and bouton-nieres, as well as how to makeflowers last, she says.

    Ashleys Tip: Plan a surprise

for yourself as a bride, she says, suggesting you ask your moth-er or maid of honor to give you

something to wear for the wed-ding, such as jewelry or a hairaccessory. Just something tomake you feel extra special onyour big day.

    JENNA AND JOSEPH

Jenna and Joseph married inJune 2014 in Bayonne, New Jer-sey.

The wedding turned outexactly how I wanted it, and I

couldnt ask for anything better, says the bride, whose favoritemoment was being at the churchand sitting next to her soon-to-be husband.

Jennas Tip: When it comesdown to making a decision, whether it be big or small, makesure it is what you and your fian-ce feel is best, she says.

    MICHELLE AND DAVE

    Michelle and Dave exchanged

vows in December 2013, in New

York City, where they had twowitn esse s, the brid es brot herand grooms sister. They didnt

have a formal engagement partyor bridal shower, and they alsoskipped a first dance and simplyenjoyed slow dancing through-out the reception.

Instead of speeches from thebest man or maid of honor, thecouple welcomed their guests bydescribing how we were feel-ing and then in a humorousway, sort of roasted the room.It was a fun way to introduceour guests to one another and

tell everyone why certain peo-ple were important to us in ourlives.

Michelles Tip: Play by yourown rules and dont compareyourself or your wedding to oth-ers. Not only will your eventbe even more memorable (butalso) bridesmaids and guests willthank you for not putting themthrough the same dog and ponyshow theyve been through for

years. Creators.comRecent bride Michelle posing for photos with her husband, Dave advises brides to play by their own rules.

    SHARON NAYLOR

After providing so much love andsupport, and perhaps some money, during the planning of your wed-ding, youll surely want to give your

    mom the perfect thank-you gift.

While most brides and grooms maintainthe ritual of giving parents their speciallyselected thank-you presents at the rehears-al dinner the night before the wedding, agrowing number of wedding couples arechoosing to gift their parents sooner, asa surprise often paired with a visit to theparents homes if they live far away. Why wait? saysbride-to-be Talia. Giving Mom a present is a happymoment, and shes not going to expect it a few monthsbefore the wedding.

No matter when you decide to give the moms and/or the stepmoms their thank-you gifts, here are some

    great ideas:

    PERSONALIZED GIFTS

Julie Kenney, celebrity gift pro at The Gifting Experts, says that personalized gift items are a top trend inmom presents. She mentions personalized pashminascarves embroidered with the word Mom, as well

as hand-painted, personalized candlesand personalized tote bags. A canvasprint of colorful florals, vines, leaves orother nature motifs expertly personal-ized with a name or a quote that you can

submit to create a custom art piece fordisplay in your moms home is anotherhot trend in gifts.

While you might think of jewelry asa bridesmaids gift, todays moms arejust as stylish and fashion-aware as theirdaughters, and so a trendy initial or

name necklace could be an affordable and personal-ized gift for Mom.

PHOTOS OF THE TWO OF YOU

Anja Winnika and her team of editors at The Knot sug-gest going classic and timeless with your gift for Mom.

Choose a favorite photo of the two of you perhapsone from when you were a little girl gazing adorably atyour mom, or a recent shot showing you on a familyvacation or just laughing together like best friends and place it in an elegant frame. A frame from the VeraWang or Kate Spade collection is an affordable way toadd a designer wow factor to this gift.

    THANKING MOM

Top trends in gifts for the mothers of the bride and groom

We secretly looked through my mothers old photoalbums and found the perfect picture of us, but it wasfaded and had a little bit of a scratch, says bride-to-be Maria. So my fiance scanned it into his computerand used Photoshop to refresh the colors and paint

away the scratch so that it looked perfect. You, too,can Photoshop your photos, or have a helper do it foryou if youre not familiar with Photoshop or any otherphoto editing tools. Refreshing a photo is essentiallyfree, meaning your present doesnt have to break thebank to be a phenomenal gift.

VIDEO OF THE TWO OF YOU

Winnika and The Knots editors also suggest produc-ing a brief video of your favorite footage with Mom,perhaps even some footage you shot recently. Add afavorite song as the soundtrack, and use simple videoediting software on your computer to create the per-fect video that Mom will watch again and again.

    A SPA VISIT

Moms who love their mani/pedis, facials and mas-sages but dont get the chance to indulge very oftenappreciate receiving a gift card to a chic spa for pam-pering sessions. They get to fully relax and enjoy theexperience without any thought of expense.

    TICKETS TO A PERFORMANCE

Winnika and The Knots editors say that tickets to aplay, a concert, the ballet, or other event make for

a wonderful experience, particularly if your momsfavorite performer is scheduled to appear at a nearbytheater. This is a good reason to gift moms early, as theartist may be scheduled to appear weeks before thewedding. Choose between good seats and excellentseats, and consider buying several tickets so that shecan bring her friends. Also, look into VIP ticket plansthat could get Mom backstage to meet her favorite art-ist after the show.

    HIRE A HOME EXPERT

One of the most surprising suggestions by Winnika

and her team is to hire a lifestyle professional such asan interior designer to help Mom redecorate the livingroom or some other area of her home. Other possi-bilities include hiring the home-organizing expert shesbeen talking about or a garden designer to help her cre-ate her dream vegetable, herb or flower garden. Youregiving Mom the experience of working with a pro toenhance her home and lifestyle, as well as the finishedproduct when the design comes to life. Mom thenthinks of the two of you whenever she enjoys her lovelyliving room, organized home office or fruitful garden.

And of course, a handwritten note from you thankingMom for each lesson shes taught you and reminisc-ing about favorite moments you shared will warm herheart. This could be your primary gift, paired with anextra little something (such as that initial necklace), orit could be added to any lavish gift you give as a touch-ing and sentimental present that Mom will love.

For Your Special Day BRIDESMAID GIFTS

Trendy totes for your bridesmaidsSHARON NAYLOR

Bridesmaids invest a lot of their time, energy, and money. According to the wedding indus-try survey site The Wedding Report, theymay each spend over $1,000 on bridesmaid

responsibilities such as buying a dress, hosting abridal shower, traveling and, booking a hotel room.To thank them for all of their effort and support,

brides love to get their bridesmaids fabulous thank-you gifts. Here are the top trends in gifts for brides-maids:

    JEWELRY

The top picks in bridesmaid jewelry, often coordinat-ed with bridesmaid dresses, include fashion-forwardinitials and name necklaces or collections of banglebracelets with beads or crystals.

Another trend is havi ng custom jewel ry madeusing sand from a bridesmaids favorite beach. HollyDaniels Christensen, founder and chief designer atDune Jewelry, says that brides often look throughher companys massive sandbank of authentic sandsfrom beaches all over the world to find one thatsmost fitting. It might be a beach where the bride

and her friends went on a girls getaway or springbreak, or a favorite lake where they spend everysummer, says Christensen. Then brides choose a

jewelry piece such as a sandbead necklace or justthe sandbead to add to a bead bracelet collection thebridesmaid already owns. Other popular items areheart-shaped pendants filled with personalized-pick

sands. When bridesmaids get these jewelry gifts, thepresent comes with favorite memories.

    PERSONALIZED GIFTS

Kathryn Drury Wagner, senior manager of content atpresent trend site Gifts.com, says, Personalization, such as monogramming a gift, or adding a date ormessage, is both a classic idea and totally on-trend.Some of the gifts that Wagner names as top trendsinclude decor items like personalized trays for enter-taining and phone cases or tablet sleeves. You cango big with a personalized item, or go small with asurprising item like a personalized Pop-Tarts box($17.95 on the site) that may remind the bridesmaidof breakfasts you enjoyed back in college or road tripsnacks.

Wagner suggests a few personali zed gift detai ltrends, like wood engraving and laser etching, as wellas using contrasting color embroidery to make ini-tials pop. Also, Wagner says that personalizing gifts

with images is now a popular option, one that can beused on phone cases, wine charms and other items.

Joseph Dolac, director of merchandising forRedEnvelope, says that personalization is a topchoice in gifts because, People want the opportunityto deliver a gift that makes a wow statement. Per-sonalized chalkboards, for example. You can changeit every day, such as adding to a list of 100 Reasons ILove you or kitchen blackboard where you can writethe menu or something like, Dinner is ready; takeit or leave it! A sense of humor and personality cancome through.

    PILLOWS

As decor items, pillows make a statement and canalso be personalized to each bridesmaid. Dolac saysthat leading trends include Silk, velvet and linen-combination pillows. Pillows with quotes or lovelystatements embroidered or printed on them can addsome flair to the bridesmaids home.

    CANDLES

In keeping with the wedding trend of DIY crafts, todays candleholders may be painted with pretty

images of florals, butterflies and other motifs.Candles are popular gifts for bridesmaids because

they are affordable, universal, and able to be person-alized in really unique ways. Candles are not contin-gent on the lifestyle of the bridesmaid (e.g., do theydrink wine? do they wear jewelry, etc.) which makesthem a gift that fits everyone, says Lyndsey Marie, owner and designer at Willow Creek Glass on Etsy.Marie says that some of the top-trend hand-painted,scent-free candle designs popular for bridesmaidgifts include bouquet, white gardenia, cherry blos-som, and pink flower.

If the hand-painted, artsy look isnt upscale

enough for you, look to limited edition candles in topdesigners lines, like Jo Malones Spring Blossom atupscale stores like Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue,a top gift pick of Wagners at Gifts.com.

    DESIGNER ACCESSORIES

Bridesmaids who love their labels will delight at get-ting a Kate Spade bracelet or a Jonathan Adler minipouch, affordable items in top-name designers col-lections. Tiffany key chains and other budget-friend-ly items come in that signature light blue box, alwaysa pleasing presentation to beloved bridesmaids.

    GLITTERY GIFTS

Wagners collection of top gift picks for bridesmaidincludes a gold glittery flash, personalized to eachbridesmaid. And fashion items with sparkle, such asheadbands, are on-trend, enjoyed by bridesmaids ofall ages, as well as junior bridesmaids in their teens

    who dont get a flask.

    PAMPERING ITEMS

Also in the designer name gift category, a trio of lipglosses from the Bobbi Brown line is a welcome gift,

and pampering lotion or massage oil collections arealso top trends for bridesmaids to indulge them-selves. Especially trendy are hand- and foot-soothingproducts like spa gloves or socks, sugar scrubs, andorganic honey or peppermint lotions.

    COCKTAIL ITEMS

Pair a colorful bottled beverage, like the brightpink-hued Sauza sparkling watermelon margarita,

with a pair of margarita glasses hand-painted withwatermelon colors or a watermelon motif, and addwatermelon-print cocktail napkins and coasters for a

cocktails-for-two basket. And of course, add in a handwritten, personalized

note of thanks to each bridesmaid, thanking herfor everything shes done to add even more joy andexcitement to your wedding, as well as for years ofthe gift of her friendship. Creators.com

expensive but it forces the bride andgroom to spend a lot of time havingvery short conversations with their

guests, says Nicole R. Matthews, founder of The Henley Company LLC,an event, travel and lifestyle concierge, who believ es couples want qual ityover quantity.

    2) ALL DRESSED UP

Wavy hair is back too for a fresh, unrefined look, says Okoro, who isalso excited about the popularity of flo-ral headwear, which can be worn withglamorous updo styles.

    5) PLAY THAT SONG!

Heres a way to get your guests dancing!Couples add a line on the RSVP card

    6) FASHIONABLE FLORALS

Flower styles are going traditionalwith hand-tied arrangements, says BillPailley, BloomNation florist and headdesigner of Artistic Surroundings.

    7) LOTS OF FLAVOR

Spicy foods including chili oil and Srira-cha will be on wedding menus in 2015,says Imberman, whos also seeing citrusdrinks in summer; comfort foods suchas soup in the winter and more snacks

and food truck nibbles served late intothe party.

    8) ALL CHARGED UP!

Guests love a couple that providesa charging station for their phones, says Matthews, who reminds bridesand grooms that guests with chargedphones can take lots of photos, whichthey can post to social media.

Many couples are creating weddinghashtags, too, such as #Maggie&Steve

to track all the posts and photos fromthe wedding on sites such as Facebook,Instagram and Twitter.

    9) HOW LOW CAN YOU GO?

The biggest bridal fashion trend thatwill take over in 2015 is the low, lowback, says Lacy Pool, a bridal buyer/stylist and accessories designer whoadmits a low back isnt an easy look topull off.

    When styled properly, this once

taboo trend can tactfully be tasteful, flirty, and feminine, she says. The keyto showcasing this style is minimal jew-elry and amazing headpieces.

    10) HIP TO BE SQUARE

Forget round cake tiers. Square cakesare trendy nowadays, with seasonal fla-vors, too, such as lemon cake in sum-mer and chocolate cakes with richaccents of mocha or praline in winter, says Imberman. Creators.com

New trends in mens wedding ringsCATHERINE MCNULTY

It is such a simple thing at heart,a single band of metal wornaround the ring finger of theleft hand indicating the wear-

er to be married. Originally in theUnited States, it was only marriedwomen who wore wedding rings.During the 20th century, it becamecustomary for men to wear them,

as well, and for most of the 20thcentury, the rings were as basic asthey come.

But no more, fellas! With menbeing more fashion forward thanever, the wedding ring is not justa statement of commitment; itsa statement of lifestyle and fash-ion, as well. With so many optionsavailable, how are you to choose?

First, let it be known that youno longer have to match yourpartners ring exactly. Even wed-

ding site extraordinaire The Knotagrees, saying, Theres no rule youhave to wear matching weddingbands. Many couples are optingfor complementary rings, whileletting their own individual styleshine through. You could pick thesame metal but different cuts, orget an inscription to tie the ringstogether. But honestly? The ringscan be completely different. Thatyouve comm itted yourselves toeach other is matching enough!

So what are your options?First, you need to choose

between a domed fit versus a flatfit. Domed, sometimes called com-fort fit, has an interior that is slight-ly domed, making it easier to slideon and off of your finger. Generally, its recommended for men becauseits easier to get over large knuckles.Flat fit is more traditional, and if

your ring is less than 5 mill ime-ters wide, the doming is not notice-able as far as comfort is concerned.Because it costs extra, be mindful

of the ring width when choosingbetween the two.

Gold is by far the most popu-lar and traditional wedding bandmaterial for both men and women. It comes in a variety of hues fromyellow to white to rose and canhave a shiny or matte finish. Goldis a softer metal and can scratch, but its affordability and ubiquitymake it enduringly popular. Silverand sterling silver are also popularchoices, but they have many of thesame problems as gold. Gold andsilver are easy to engrave, makingthem a favorite choice for coupleswho want that.

For grooms who need somethingstronger or just want somethingdifferent, platinum is the trendi-est choice. This white metal isprecious and expensive but verydurable. It can be scratched, but

scratches easily can be buffed out.If you like the look of platinum

but not the trendiness or the pricetag, consider cobalt. It has a simi-lar sheen and luster, but its muchcheaper. Cobalt is also harder andtherefore stronger than platinum.

For something darker, manygrooms are turning to tungsten

carbide. Not only is this dark sil-ver metal highly durable andscratch-resistant but its afford-able, to boot. The only problem isthat if youre not used to wearingrings, tungsten is very heavy, andthat can take some getting usedto. Titanium, on the other hand,is lightweight and unbreakable. Italso has a natural matte finish, forguys who are no frills.

If metal isnt your thing, ceram-ic rings are gaining popularity as

wedding bands. This is not yourlumpy high school art project.High-tech ceramic has been usedin the aerospace and medicalindustries for years and recentlyhas become a fashion darling.Tough and glossy, these bandshave more in common with tung-sten carbide than with the memo-rial plates hawked on QVC.

Once youve chosen the fit andthe metal, its time to choose thefinish. Do you want somethingsuper-shiny or matte? Certain met-als tend to have a natural lusterthat makes one preferable to theother, but any jeweler will be ableto help you with your choice.

The most important thing is tonever forget the meaning behindthe ring or that you will be wear-ing it for a very long time.
