From the Rabbi

This is a season of change. We are in

the middle of the period of the

Counting of the Omer. Starting on

the second day of Passover, our

tradition counts off fifty days

between the festivals of Passover and

Shavuot. Last month we celebrated

our ancestors’ release from slavery

to freedom. Now we are, as it were,

crossing the Reed Sea, counting the

days between Egypt and our

acceptance of the Torah of

responsibility for the quality of our

lives and relationships. We are

wandering freely in the wilderness of

uncertainly about the future. It will

be the responsibility of each and

every one of you to shape that

future. As you undertake that

challenge, I would like to recommend

that love be the guiding force as you

transition into the next phase of

community life at Temple Israel.

Some of you already know that I am

about to begin a transition of my

own. I will be saying goodbye to all

of you during the next month or so

while getting ready to move to my

next interim assignment. Saying

goodbye is the hardest part of my

work. I will certainly miss all of you.

But I know that I’m leaving you in

very good hands.

Between now and the end of June, I

hope that we will have the

conversations we need to have to

say goodbye to each other. As some

of you have already heard, I will be

serving a congregation in Cheshire,

Connecticut, next year. Although I

will no longer be your rabbi after

June, I will be checking in with Rabbi

Bodney-Halasz from time to time to

see how you are faring together.

Shalom v’ahavah

From the Rabbi Educator

The Times They Are a-Changing

As we wrap up the 2015-2016

school year, there is a feeling of great

change and excitement. Over the

past few years the Religious School

Committee and I have wrestled with

the idea that we would need to make

a major change in our school

structure to better adapt to our

demographics. We envisioned a new

model for our program but, with

uncertainty about who the next

Rabbi/Educator would be, we waited

to move forward until now.

From the moment I learned that I

had been chosen for the position of

Senior Rabbi, Carol Finley and I

began searching for the right

individual to take over the position

of Rabbi/Educator. After

interviewing several candidates, I am

thrilled to announce that Rabbi Tina

M. Sobo will be joining our Temple

Israel clergy team in July. Rabbi

Sobo, who will be ordained from

HUC-JIR in Cincinnati later this

month, brings many talents that will

compliment and enrich our Temple

Staff. She is a trained Jewish

Educator, with extensive experience

in both formal and informal

classrooms. Her passion in the

rabbinate is bringing Judaism into

everyday life through awareness and

through integration of the "religious"

and "secular." Rabbi Sobo’s

Rabbinical

Thesis is

entitled

Mastering

Middot: Moral

Development at

Jewish Summer

Camp. Her

capstone

project for her

MA in Religious

Education was

entitled Molding

Menschlichkeit: Middot for a One-Room

Schoolhouse. Her many qualifications

include serving as Director of Jewish

Life, at URJ 6 Points Sports Academy

in Greensboro, NC, for three years,

and as Assistant Director of Kulanu,

the Reform Jewish High School in

Cincinnati, since 2012. As you can

see by her interests, Rabbi Sobo is

the perfect person to help us

reimagine our children’s classroom

experience and lead our school to

new heights. I am looking forward to

introducing you all to Rabbi Sobo,

her husband Matt, and their newborn

daughter Stephanie. You’ll have an

opportunity to meet them when they

join us as guests at the Teacher

Appreciation and College Send-Off

Share Shabbat on Friday, May 6.

Rabbi Sobo will also be joining us for

our Annual meeting on Wednesday,

May 25.

At the beginning of this month

parents should receive registration

packets for the 2016-2017 school

year. Beginning this fall, our school

structure will shift to a multi-grade

format that, I believe, will allow for

more creativity and engagement of

students. We will offer four distinct

classes based on our current

enrollment: PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8, and the

9-10 Confirmation Class. Please

remember to turn registration forms

in to the Temple office before May

31 to qualify for Early Bird

Registration discounts.

The next Religious School

Committee meeting will be

Wednesday, May 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the

Red Robin restaurant located at 6404

Miller Lane.

It’s Time To Renew Your Membership

This month, you will receive a packet showing your past contributions and asking you to set your membership

contribution for Temple’s new fiscal year, beginning July 1, 2016 and ending June 30, 2017.

Please return your completed form as soon as possible. Suzanne Shaw, Temple Israel's Executive Director,

will set up your membership account based on your response.

Temple never denies membership to anyone for financial reasons. But we hope that those who can will increase their contributions in the coming year.

When you voluntarily increase your membership contribution, you help sustain Temple’s programs

and services both for yourself and for our community. Member donations make up half of Temple’s revenues, and

the balance comes mostly from Temple Israel Foundation and fundraising.

If you can afford to give more, please do. We count on you. Increase from regular to mitzvah membership

($1875), or from a mitzvah membership to Lamed Vav membership ($2400), or anywhere in between. If you’re

already a Lamed Vav member, consider giving more if you can. Your donations allow us to remain a vibrant center

of Judaism for our entire community.
