    ENJOY!

  • Happy AnniversaryTime flies when youre having funand when youre listening to really great music, too. Its hard to believe that its been five years since the Boston Jewish Music Festival was born in a coffee shop. What better way to celebrate than with five weeks of outstanding events across the region, from Portsmouth, NH to Providence, RI, from the Back Bay to MetroWest. This years highlights include a concert by and tribute to Theodore Bikel, one of the most important figures in the revival of Jewish music in America. Other events not to be missed include: the Heartbeat performance group of Israeli and Palestinian young adults; Dudu Tassa, an Israeli rock star exploring his Iraqi musical roots; and a special multi-media performance inspired by the story of the Sarajevo Haggadah. Not to mention klezmer, tango, rock n' roll, symphonic, Sephardic music and more. Its five weeks of amazing music you won't want to miss. Enjoy!

  • The Sarajevo HaggadahMerima KljuoSpecial appearance by author Geraldine BrooksArsenal Center for the Arts Watertown, 8:00 pm

The 20132014 New Jewish Culture Network music commission and touring project, The Sarajevo Haggadah: Music of the Book, composed by Bosnian-born accordionist Merima Kljuo, traces the incredible journey of this most treasured manuscript that was smuggled from Spain during the Inquisition, hidden from Nazis during WWII by a Muslim librarian, saved from the ravages of the 1992 Bosnian War, and eventually restored to the National Museum in Sarajevo. Inspired by the musical traditions of Spain, Italy, Austria, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kljuo collaborates with pianist Seth Knopp and artist Bart Woodstrup to create a multimedia performance exploring the Sarajevo Haggadah as a symbol of diaspora and return. Produced in partnership with New Center LIVE, we are honored to present a post-concert discussion with Merima and Geraldine Brooks, author of People of The Book, the historical novel that inspired this production.
