  • Welcome To...

Long Beach Island18 and I like it!

    Je r s e y Sho r e Gu e s t .c om 3

B eautiful Long Beach Island is an 18-mile long work of Mother Nature. The Island as its locally called is actually a barrier island with some of the most glorious, unspoiled beaches along the Eastern Seaboard. Many of the rich and famous choose Long Beach Island as their relaxing summer getaway not only for its serene beaches and endless blue skies, but also for its seclusion. At the North End of the island, youll find the Borough of Barnegat Light, home to the nationally-recognized, historical landmark, the Barnegat Lighthouse. Named Barendegat by Captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey in 1614, this towns name translates to Inlet of the Breakers. These rough waters are still in existence today as LBIs coastline is dotted with many sunken shipwrecks. The first lighthouse, built in 1835, had grown victim to these rough waters and fell into the sea. The Barnegat Lighthouse or Old Barney as its nicknamed, was commissioned in 1859 and tempts visitors today with panoramic, scenic views from atop its lookout tower. LBI is home to exquisite beaches, beautiful churches, trendy boutiques, art galleries, delicious restaurants, entertainment, and even a live theater. Unlike many Jersey Shore towns, LBI does not have a boardwalk. Distinctively so, LBI is 18-miles long and about a half-mile wide, so visitors and locals alike can easily stroll from sea to bay, where it is said you can witness the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Relaxing in the untouched beauty and reconnecting with nature are the number one attractions here, but LBI is also well-known for fishing, clamming, crabbing, water sport adventures, bird watching and eating your weight in seafood. The locals here do all they can to keep LBI a natural treasure, so be sure to take some time to appreciate all of The Islands simple pleasures. We hope you visit us often!d

    6 Je r s e y Sho r e Gu e s t .c om

At the North End of Long Beach Island lies the tiny town of Barnegat Light. You cant miss Old Barney, the red and white colored Barnegat Lighthouse that overlooks the inlet. Designed

by General George Meade and commissioned on January 1, 1859, Old Barney is the second tallest lighthouse in the United States. Standing at a height of 172 feet, Old Barney is a very popular stop for lighthouse enthusiasts as well as for photographers and artists seeking a little inspiration. Natural beauty abounds in the Barnegat Lighthouse State Park and throughout the surrounding area. Large flocks of migrating shorebirds also reserve annual vacations here as they rest and refuel in one of the last remaining marine-time forests. Its also a fishing fans favorite, offering some of the areas most thrilling fishing all year long, including surf fishing, deep sea fishing, sport fishing, party and charter boat rentals, and crabbing and clamming. Sailors and divers alike find sanctuary here and spend hours enjoying the undisturbed calm of this quiet retreat. Dog lovers bond with their beloved pets at the islands only dog park.

In Barnegat Light, you can appreciate history, get artistically inspired, reconnect with nature, entertain Fido, and rejoice in the great outdoors. d

Just like Harvey the Rabbit in the 1950 film Harvey, the local Harvey who slept in a hummock that he carved into the earth and who named the town Harvey Cedars was actually based on a

legend. Instead, the town was originally named Harvest Quarters for its harvested salt hay and seaweed as well as for its abundance of cedars. Over time and from many mispronunciations later, Harvest Quarters was eventually renamed Harvey Cedars. The town has a newer face than most LBI towns. This is because much of it was destroyed by one of the biggest hurricanes to hit the shore in 1962. On the bay, youll find Sunset Park, which not only offers stunning sunset views, but also adds some recreational fun to your LBI stay with a childrens play area, a basketball court, tennis courts, a ball park, and a walking path. Additionally, on 77th Street, youll find a childrens bay beach, where children can get their fill of fun in the sun! Harvey Cedars is the perfect prescription for childs play, recreation, and relaxation! d

    Surf s Up...

Surf CityA lmost immediately after you complete the journey across The Causeway that links the mainland, youll arrive in Surf City. Its a perfect downshift from what youve left behind and a delightful entry as to what lies ahead on your Long Beach Island escape. The busy atmosphere sings recreation and there are many artsy shops here and jewelry lovers can treat themselves to loads of original creations. While in town, you can stock up on essential supplies and become acquainted to the way life goes on in Long Beach Island.

Of course, any town named Surf City is sure to please water lovers! Having previously been named Old Mansion, Great Swamp and Long Beach City, this boroughs name officially became Surf City in 1894. Surf Citys cheerful attitude is a great welcome to your island stay. So whether youre settling here or just stopping by, Surf s Up for your enjoyment! d

    Ship BottomS

hip Bottom got its name from a murky tale. The legend goes that it was a dark and stormy night (isnt that the way stories usually start) in 1817, when cries were heard

from the sea. Another captain finally discovered a morbid sight coming through the fog. It was a wrecked ship, over-turned on the banks. Dead sailors and crew hung from the rigging. All appeared lost, yet a tiny tapping was heard from under their feet. The Captain broke through the hull, discovering the lone survivor, a young woman who spoke no English and had no records. She thanked the crew by drawing a cross in the sand and then disappeared into the fog. The place of her rescue, from the ships bottom, became the name of one of the oldest towns on Long Beach Island.

    Je r s e y Sho r e Gu e s t .c om 1 1

It was another foggy night on January 10, 1910 when the Italian ship, Fortuna ran aground, reaffirming the historic towns name and symbol of Ship Bottom. Today, Ship Bottom is a vibrant town, full of life compared to its once haunted past. Shoppers are delighted as happy merchants greet them at one of their many exciting sidewalk sales. Water enthusiasts love the array of activities including swimming, kayaking, and surfing. Ship Bottom is also well-known for hosting many small-town events like free C on c e r t s - b y - t h e - B a y , Cruise Nights, and an annual Christmas parade.d

    Beach Haven

Beach Haven lives up to its name and is a haven for action on Long Beach Island! Its the busiest of all The Islands small towns and is a must-stop on your LBI adventure. Beach Haven has a number of fine hotels, motels, and Bed and Breakfasts,

and youll find many guests staying at one the beautiful Victorian homes located in the heart of the towns historical district.

This delightful area in town gives you that stepping-back-in-time feeling and is where youll find live performances at The Surflight Theatre, exhibits and artifacts at the Long Beach Island Historical Museum, and free concerts at the Veterans Bicentennial Park. For some great scavenger-hunt-type-fun, stroll the streets and keep your eyes peeled for white plaques with blue lettering. These signs point out the homes and buildings built before 1900. Holgate

    Jers e y Sho r e Gu e s t .c om 31

I f your passion is to really get away from it all, then head to Holgate. Both Beach Haven Inlet and Beach Haven Heights are often considered to be a part of this shore town. Here, the ocean and bay meet at a point far off the mainland, offering remarkable views and a real sense of escape from the world youve left behind. At the very tip, youll find the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. This two and one-half mile stretch of beach and marshland is closed to visitors during the summer season to protect animals and the environment. But, if you visit during the off-season, you can enjoy this undeveloped haven for fish and fowl. Holgate is also the only site for trailers and avid campers on the island. There are also some lovely, private hotels in the area. This remarkable setting is a favorite with fishermen and bird watchers alike and is a pictur-esque place for a reflective read of that novel youve been saving all year. From sunrise to sunset, Holgate offers glorious views, fresh sea air, and exquisite tranquility. At the end of it all, its just the beginning of a great vacation. d

  • Gateway City...

    Manahawkin

    32 Je r s e y Sho r e Gu e s t .c om

T he Manahawkin of today is a far cry from the one named by the Lenni Lanape Indians. According to legend, the Lenni Lanape chose this name, which means good corn land, because of its rich farmland with easy access to both sea and bay. Always productive,

Manahawkin was home to the first water operated sawmills and grew its trade in boat building, from the rich catches of clams and oysters, and from cranberry farming. The town was also home to the first house of worship in Ocean County, the First Baptist Church Society. Located on the corner of Rt.9 and North Lakeshore Dr., this church underwent a major renovation in 1864, is over 250 years old. Fishing fans are sure to catch on to just how good the fishing is in this area and leave with buckets of clams and bushels of crabs. Crabbing is King and there are plenty of crabs for everyone! Charter boats and tackle stores take you to the hot-spots in the Manahawkin Bay and you can continue on to the Barnegat Bay, where even more dynamic maritime awaits you.

The second Saturday of every June, Stafford Township celebrates Founders Day, which is a day-long celebration featuring a lively parade, beauty pageants, childrens games, entertainment, food, fireworks, and more. The Doc Cramer Sports Complex is home to this festive celebration and can be found on Doc Cramer Blvd.

Manahawkin is just minutes away from Long Beach Island and carries over The Causeway with it a warm welcome and plenty of smiles. Its a great place to stop, shop, eat and explore. d

    South On...

    Route 9T

raveling South on Route 9, away from Long Beach Island and towards Atlantic City, youll see less congestion and more of the rural and natural life that

still exists in Ocean County. Granted, nothing is really undeveloped in this rapidly growing

county, but you will notice a quieter pace with small farms and plenty of fishing stops. Campers and RV enthusiasts know that West Creek is a welcoming stop. The Sea Pirate Campground offers tent camping sites with water, electricity and cable. For an added bonus, theres even RV camping, as well as cabin and cottage rentals too. Youll also pass through Tuckerton, which was the third port of entry into the U.S and held previous names like Fishtown & Clamtown. Tuckerton also has a working maritime museum called the Tuckerton Seaport & Baymens Museum. Within walking distance from here, youll find quaint Village Shops and some delicious outdoor eateries. Another great idea for a fun-filled afternoon is to pack a picnic-lunch and enjoy some fresh air at Stanley Tip Seaman Park. This county park is 22-acres of fun, featuring bike and fitness trails, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, a small boat launch, fishing , open play areas, horseshoes, shuffleboard, a picnic area, and restrooms. Its a family-friendly destination and is handicap accessible. Stretch your legs, revel in the great outdoors, discover some maritime history, and enjoy the great and many splendors that make up Southern Ocean County! d
