RENEWING OUR COMITTMENT TO LIFE-LONG LEARNING

As most of you know by now, Congregation Torat El is a mission driven organization that is focused on the importance of building relationships. As our mission statement reads:

We are a community building relationships with God, Judaism, and each other; through prayer, study, discussion, and action; guided by Torah, our traditions, those who came before us and our vision for the future.

As our members have begun to familiarize themselves with our mission in recent years, I have noticed that much of the focus has naturally been in the context of the interaction between individuals or groups of individuals in our Congregation Torat El family. Most people understand our mission to be focused on what it means to be a part of a hevre, (group of friends), and how the synagogue can work to create stronger connections between its members. While I am proud to say that we have made, and continue to make great strides in that aspect of community building, I want to take a moment to point out that there are other aspects of this relational Judaism which we must continue to pursue as well.

If you look at the mission statement more closely, you see that the relationships that we are striving to create are not only relationships between individuals. We are also to be building relationships with our God, with Torah, and with our Judaism more generally. One of the primary ways that we endeavor to do that in our congregation is through the pursuit of study. Indeed Torah study, in its broadest sense, has the potential to connect us to God, one another, and our tradition simultaneously. That is why I want to encourage each of you to strive to deepen your commitment to life-long Jewish learning by joining our synagogue family as we study and learn Torah together throughout this coming year. There are numerous opportunities just waiting to be taken advantage of; and as our great sage Hillel used to teach, there is no time like the present to get started.

Do not say I will study when I have the time, for you may never have the time (Avot 2:5)

Here is a short sampling of ways to deepen your relationship to learning with your community this year. Please check the synagogue calendar for the most up-to-date schedules.

1. Join us for our Wednesday Lunch ‘n Learn series about Jewish Ethics and learn how our Jewish values can speak to our every day interactions with others, and help us wade through many of life's daily dilemmas. (Starts October 21st at 12:00pm.)

2. Join us for our Wednesday evening classes. This year we are taking a closer look at topics such as Israel, Jewish law, and Jewish story. Our first iEngage Israel course from the Shalom Hartman Institute Lecture Series is particularly exciting. We will be looking at Israel in an exciting and innovative way- through video lecture, text study, and discussion. The goal of this course is "to lift the level of discourse about Israel and shift it from a debate about policies and PR, or even historical facts, to an opportunity to learn about Jewish values” and the future of our individual and collective relationship with Israel. (Starts October 14th at 7:30pm. If you missed the first class, please join us for the next one.)

3. Join us for our Scholars-In-Residence Weekend, October 30th-November 1st with Dr. Andrea Lieber and Dr. Ted Mewin. From The Jewish Deli in American Popular Culture, to learning how to count our blessings, and a close look at the role of non-Jewish in Jewish life--this weekend promises to be fascinating with a little bit of something for everyone. Come and explore the various aspects of what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century from these wonderful scholars. I know them both personally and am sure that you won't be disappointed. Call the office, or check the website for more details!

4. Lastly, check out our new monthly "Learn ‘n Burn" Shabbat morning spiritual experience for your mind, body, and soul. Come and join us on the first Shabbat of each month beginning November 7th and ending April 2nd. The first hour (9am-10am) will be an informal session dedicated to learning about various aspects of the service and/or the Torah portion of the week. And once your mind is filled, why not stay for some relaxing Yoga, followed by an oneg celebration with the larger community!

As you can see, we have many opportunities for deepening your relationship with Torah learning this year. Be on the lookout for more classes, both formal and informal throughout the year. If you have an idea about something that you would like to study, and we are not yet offering it, please e-mail me directly to let me know.

Wishing you a wonderful year of learning ahead!

Two Rabbis, Three Opinions: Taking A Closer Look At Jewish Law

Have you heard of the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards (CJLS) of the Conservative Movement? Did you ever wonder how decisions were made in our communities, or how the mechanisms for changing and adapting the law actually work in our movement? Ranging in topics from ritual practices, to interpersonal relationships, gender issues, technology, business and biomedical ethics, this robust body has produced a wealth of literature on a variety of topics intended to guide our lives and inform our behavior. Come and join us as we take a close look at the CJLS, explore and grapple with its relevance, and study some of the actual responses that it has produced during the past century. No previous knowledge required. Bring your questions and bring a friend!

Wednesdays: 7:30-8:30pm - January 20, 27, February 3, 10

Study Through Story

Eli Wiesel once wrote that "God created man because He loves stories." In Judaism it seems that there is a story for every occasion in life. From secular stories, to religious stories, cultural stories to national stories, or even stories that we have adapted from other traditions - the power of Jewish storytelling speaks to our heart and soul in a uniquely profound way. Come and join Rabbi Schonbrun as he shares some of his favorite Jewish stories and we explore their lessons and practical applications together. As we approach the Festival Of Passover we will also look at the way in which storytelling can play a central role in our Seder experience. No previous knowledge required. Bring a friend, and perhaps a story or two!

Wednesdays: 7:30-8:30pm - April 6, 13, 20, 27

Wednesday Lunch ’n Learn (Jewish Ethics 101) Are you looking for a way to add more meaning to your life? Do you enjoy learning and meeting new people? Do you like to eat lunch? Join us and take one hour out of your busy week to engage in Jewish learning.

We will continue exploring Rabbi Joseph Telushkin’s "Code of Jewish Ethics" series. Discussions will center around a wide range of topics from judgment of self and others, civility and good manners, forgiveness, anger, humiliation, the laws of fair speech, and proper versus improper criticism. Come and join us for this interactive, informal, and engaging experience. Please bring a friend! Wednesdays: 12:00-1:00pm

Caregiver Support Group Share, Learn and Support One Another

The Caregiver Support Group provides a supportive and educational environment to caregivers taking care of parents, spouses and family members in a safe and non-judgemental environment. The group provides comfort to members by creating the opportunity to share common experiences and learn coping strategies.

Cindy Hyman, LCSW once again facilitates this on-going monthly support group.

The Caregiver Support Group meets on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:30pm. Next meeting is November 16th.

This program, which is held at Congregation Torat El, is open to the community and has been made possible by a grant from the Jewish Federation in the Heart of New Jersey.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, LARRY SHAPIRO

I recently received a request from a congregant to be put on the agenda of the Board of Trustees monthly meeting to discuss an issue of concern to her. We spoke and I explained that the Board would not be familiar with that particular issue and that she should speak to the committee involved in that aspect of the Temple. We facilitated her meeting with that committee so she could be heard.

This incident made me think that many of you may not be familiar with “how things work” in terms of Temple governance and decision making. So, here is a primer.

The Board establishes the vision of where we want to be as a congregation and sets goals and strategies on how to get there. The committees and their volunteers then implement that strategy with our staff and Executive Board. Rarely does the Board of Trustees make specific decisions except where required by the Constitution, By-Laws or if the issue is of such a magnitude that the Board needs to be involved. However, even then, decisions are based upon the recommendations and work done by our committees and their volunteers.

For example, with the recent change to Shabbat School, the Education Committee with Rabbi Metz, our Education Director, reviewed the experiences of other synagogues who have made this change and reviewed the numerous issues involved, including: the impact on the budget; use of space, ritual, B’na Mitzvah impacts, and others. This in depth review involved staff, clergy, volunteers and members who would be potentially impacted by the change. Ultimately, the Committee voted to recommend the change. The Committee reported its efforts and decision to the Executive Board which, after its own review of the Committee’s work and determination that the issues had been thoroughly addressed, brought the recommendation before the Board. The Board reviewed the report and presentation by the Committee and Rabbi Metz and ultimately voted to approve this major change.

I hope the foregoing gives you an insight into how things get done in your Temple. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Larry

My name is Emma Frances Barofsky. I am in 7th grade at Ocean Township Intermediate School. I enjoy tennis, skiing and going to the beach. My Bat Mitzvah is on November 28, 2015. For my Bat Mitzvah project I volunteered at Jewish Family and Children’s Service in Asbury Park. I helped make bags for the food pantry and distribute the bags. In addition I gave out stuffed animals to some of the children that were there with their families. This motivated me to donate many of my own stuffed animals. If you have any that are gently used please bring them to the temple. I will make sure they go to the right children.

Hope to see you at my Bat Mitzvah.

Emma

Yasher Koach to our B’nai Mitzvah

My name is Jonathan Horowitz and I will become a Bar Mitzvah on November 21st.

I am excited for this day because I will become a “counted” member of my Jewish Community.

For my Bar Mitzvah, I have completed 2 Mitzvah Projects.

Since I was 5 years old – I have been raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association. Plus, I volunteer at many Memory Walks in NJ. I volunteer at the T-shirt booth. This year, I became a Grand Champion, which means I raised over $1000 dollars.

I love the beach, boating, fishing and all marine life. For the past 4 years, I have been a member of the Manatee Club. I adopted Howie the Manatee. I am also a member of Clean Ocean Action and have participated in several Beach Sweeps in Bradley Beach.

ISRAEL INFORMATION SESSION

We are planning an amazing trip to Israel this summer August 15-25, 2016

Together with DA’AT Travel, we have worked to begin creating an incredible itinerary that works for first-time travelers to Israel as well as those who have

been to Israel before. This will not simply be a “highlights” trip of Israeli sights, but will include a variety of experiences to give us a well-rounded

flavor of Israeli culture, history, and society. The current itinerary is a first draft. The trip will be an inter-generational trip designed to meet the needs of a variety of ages, but the final itinerary will be geared towards those who sign up to join us. Please join us at the synagogue for our first information

session on Thursday, November 12th at 7:30pm following Minyan. Please bring a friend.

As part of our focus on “Food Hunger Challenges ” this year in our greater community, The Synagogue Food Drive will be ongoing. Receptacles will continue to be in the main lobby for packaged, unexpired food. The Social Action Committee has also identified several organizations in need of volunteers. Please consider volunteering at one of the following places or at one of the many worthwhile charities in the area during the Holiday season and beyond. Please call the organization to arrange a time and tell them of your Congregation Torat El connection. Let us know too, so we can create a list of people who would prefer to go with a buddy.
