WINTER 2017 :: Campaign Update 3

Victors for Michigan campaign volunteers gathered to celebrate this year’s recipients of the David B. Hermelin Award for Fundraising Volunteer Leadership. The Hermelin Award was established in 2004 to recognize outstanding fundraising volunteers whose commitment to, and support of, the University of Michigan reflects the standards set by the late David B. Hermelin (BBA ’58, LLD Hon ’00).

A tireless and exuberant volunteer and major fundraiser for Michigan for more than two decades, Hermelin served on the national committee for the Campaign for Michigan in the 1980s and was a major gifts co-chair of the campaign steering committee for the Billion-Dollar Campaign for Michigan in the 1990s. He also served as co-chair of the Detroit Major Gifts Committee.

The Hermelin Award is presented annually to volunteers whose fundraising efforts for Michigan exemplify the dedication David Hermelin showed to the university until his death in 2000.

The university was proud to recognize this year’s Hermelin Award recipients: Anthony (BS ’76, MS ’78, MD ’83, Med Fellowship ’89) and Cheryl (AB ’77, MBA

U-M DONORS: GIVING ABOVE AND BEYOND

Dedicated U-M donors continue to exceed expectations. As of December 2016, more than 329,000 friends have contributed more than $3.84 billion to the Victors for Michigan campaign, putting the university within close reach of the $4 billion goal almost two years ahead of schedule.

These supporters are demonstrating their extraordinary commitment to U-M and the important work underway. The $4 billion goal was set as the most ambitious of any public university to date. As loyal friends of U-M, donors are going above and beyond to meet that challenge.

Gifts to the campaign are already making an impact. This year, endowment funds have grown to support almost 13,000 students; the Munger Residence is bringing together graduate students from many disciplines; the Forbes Institute for Cancer Discovery is spearheading research; and new spaces are enhancing learning at UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint. And that is just a fraction of the impact.

Many opportunities remain. Student support continues to be our highest Victors for Michigan campaign priority.

Ongoing support of campaign priorities helps ensure the university's perpetual excellence—for the good of the students, patients, communities, and world citizens of today and tomorrow.

As President Schlissel recently noted:

“The primary focus of my work as president is to position the University of Michigan for perpetual excellence and public impact in research, creative work, performance, patient care, and education. There simply is no university better suited to advance the highest ideals of what a public research university should be.”

Our world needs victors. Be a victor for Michigan.

The most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer fundraiser is helping someone realize their dream. I help others consider what doors their college education opened for them—the transformative experience and lifelong friends they made —and recognize that, through their generosity, they can help others achieve similar life- changing experiences.

PETER C. MERTZ

Peter Mertz (BS ’74, MBA ’81) of Hanover, New Hampshire, is co-founder, chair, CEO, and chief investment officer of Global Forest Partners LP. His early lead gift to the School of Natural Resources and Environment provided an important vote of confidence in the Victors for Michigan campaign. By chairing the school’s campaign committee, he provided ongoing leadership and inspired contributions from current students and younger alumni. Peter’s deep commitment to the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and its

Congenital Heart Center includes making generous gifts, serving as an ambassador throughout the country, hosting events, and raising significant funds for children’s health. He also provides counsel on national and regional campaign committees. Peter’s generosity extends to the Stephen M. Ross School of Business and the Frederick A. and Barbara M. Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise. He encourages others to give to U-M, and he constantly says “yes” when asked for his time, resources, and leadership.

‘‘Student support is our passion—we want students to have the opportunity to attend Michigan and to be successful during and after their experiences here. Donating and volunteering help us realize that belief and share with others the vital role of student support in enabling students’ attendance and success!

ANTHONY T. AND CHERYL S. CHAPEKIS

Anthony (“Andy”) (BS ’76, MS ’78, MD ’83, Med Fellowship ’89) and Cheryl (AB ’77, MBA ’81) Chapekis of Dublin, Ohio, do it all: organize, lead, motivate, and give. Together they serve on the Global Student Support Committee and, with another volunteer, co-chair the Columbus Campaign Council. Andy is on the Medical School Admissions Committee; Cheryl serves on the board of the Alumni Club of Central Ohio. They had given to scholarships for years and wanted to leverage the Michigan Matching

Initiative by inviting others to join them. Alongside three other donors, they created the first-ever Central Ohio Alumni Club Scholarship Fund and raised more than $160,000. They also support and raise funds for the Blavin Scholars, a fund aiding Michigan students who have spent time in foster care. Andy and Cheryl lead by example in giving, volunteering, and urging others to become involved as well. They ask the University of Michigan what more they can do; then, they do it.

I love giving back to this great university that helped me achieve personal and professional success beyond my wildest dreams. It’s gratifying to be part of the leadership that ensures Michigan remains the ‘Leaders and Best’ for generations. By paying it forward, I know I’m making a difference for Michigan’s even brighter future.

MARY L. PETROVICH

‘‘

Mary Petrovich (BSEIO ’85) of West Bloomfield, Michigan, an operating executive of the Carlyle Group, has been a force for U-M as a donor and as a volunteer. She makes introductions that lead to gifts. She was the first softball team captain for Coach Carol Hutchins and continued her involvement in athletics by leading the Letterwinners M Club and securing gifts toward the M Club meeting room in the new Golf Course clubhouse. She contributed generously to the renovations of the Wilpon Baseball and Softball Complex and Michigan Stadium.

Mary serves as a member of the President’s Advisory Group and the Campaign Planning Task Force at the College of Engineering and on various national and regional U-M campaign committees. As part of the Michigan Medicine Advisory Group, Mary champions medical research to benefit patients by increasing how quickly discoveries are translated into therapies. Mary understands how scholarships change lives, so she created a softball scholarship and an engineering scholarship, and she encourages others to do the same.

AN EXPANDED ROSS SCHOOL HOME

JUST IN TIME FOR HOMECOMINGAs CEO of Related Companies, one of the largest private real estate development firms in the country, Jeff T. Blau (BBA ’90) of New York City has witnessed the completion of plenty of building projects. Perhaps few have held as much personal meaning, though, as the one celebrated on October 21, 2016, when Blau came to U-M along with his wife, Lisa J. Blau, and their three children.

The official opening of the new Jeff T. Blau Hall at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business marked an important milestone, Blau said. It helps complete the long-term plan for a unified business school complex envisioned years ago by Stephen M. Ross (BBA ’62, LLD Hon ’11), founding chair of Related Companies.

Together with the renovated Kresge Hall, Blau Hall forms a complex providing 179,000 square feet of new classrooms, collaboration spaces, and offices, as well as a redesigned digital library—all configured to enhance collaboration between faculty and students in the digital age.

The new buildings “are specifically designed to encourage collaboration, creativity, and innovation among our students and our staff,” Blau said, “and in doing that, they help keep our school among the very best in the world.”

When the Ross School unveiled Jeff T. Blau Hall (bottom photo), several hundred guests attended the ribbon-cutting (top photo), including (left to right) former Ross School deans Joe White, Bob Dolan, and Alison Davis-Blake; Regent Andrew Richner; Scott DeRue, the Edward J. Frey Dean and Stephen M. Ross Professor of Business at Michigan Ross; President Mark Schlissel; Jeff and Lisa Blau and family (also pictured with President Schlissel, middle photo); and school namesake Stephen M. Ross.R
