Chateau Montelena's rich history began on a chilly fall morning when Alfred L. Tubbs spaded over and inspected the soilwhere he thought of planting estate vineyards. He'd heard the Napa Valley was the best place to grow grapes in California. Adeal was struck and in January of 1882 the San Francisco entrepreneur owned 254 acres of rugged land just two miles northof Calistoga at the base of Mount Saint Helena. The soils are well drained, stony and loose – perfect for the vine cuttings hewould plant.

It took less than a decade to turn his dream into reality. First Tubbs planted his vineyards, then he built his Chateau, and in1886 he imported a French-born winemaker. By 1896 his winery, christened Chateau Montelena (a contracted form of MountSaint Helena), was the seventh largest in the Napa Valley.

Winemaking at the Chateau came to an end with prohibition. After prohibition was repealed, the Tubbs family continued toharvest the vineyard, making some wines and selling grapes to other wineries and home winemakers until they sold thewinery in 1958.

The Chateau and its overgrown grounds passed into the hands of Chinese electrical engineer Yort Wing Frank and his wifeJeanie, who were looking for a peaceful spot to retire. The Chateau inspired Frank to excavate a lake with groundslandscaped to reflect the Chinese gardens of his homeland. Today, Jade Lake is considered one of Napa Valley's mostbeautiful sanctuaries, home to a variety of fish and wildlife, and surrounded by weeping willows and native fauna.

In 1968, Lee and Helen Paschich bought the property, and brought Jim Barrett, then a lawyer in Southern California, in as apartner. Under Jim's leadership, the vineyard was cleared and replanted, and the Chateau outfitted with modern winemakingequipment. He assembled a team to oversee the vineyard and winemaking, and grew and contracted for the highest-qualitygrapes in the Napa Valley. In 1972 wines were made for the first time.

That same year, Jim bought the estate from Lee Paschich. The first few years he still lived and worked in Southern California, and so “commuted” to the winery on a regular basis in his own airplane.

In 1976 Chateau Montelena put California at the forefront of the wine world. That year a who's-who of the French wine andfood establishment gathered for a grand tasting at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Paris. Four white Burgundies were tastedagainst six California Chardonnays. When the scores were tallied, the French Judges were convinced that the top-rankingwhite wine was one of their own. In fact, it was Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay, rated above all other wines. Thisseminal event has been memorialized recently in the book "The Judgment of Paris," by George Taber, as well as in the 2008feature film Bottle Shock.

Today Chateau Montelena continues to be the quality benchmark in Napa Valley, consistently producing some of the finestwines in California. Master Winemaker Bo Barrett, Jim's son, now runs the estate with the help of Winemaker Cameron Parryand Vineyard Manager Dave Vella.

"Modern-day society seems to always be in search of new stars, but this winery has been a Cabernet Sauvignon superherofor over 30 years! Chateau Montelena's Estate Cabernet Sauvignon remains one of California's most remarkable Cabernets. Ihave been following it since the early 1970s, and even the most difficult vintages are still drinking beautifully. The homevineyard is so consistent that even in difficult vintages this wine is far better than its competition." Robert Parker, TheWorld's Greatest Wine Estates

“Proprietor Bo Barrett and his team led by Cameron Parry and Matt Crafton exude passion. Few producers in Napa Valley canmatch Barrett’s perspective, particularly when it comes to current vintages within a historical context.” Antonio Galloni,Vinous Media

during the harvest period when we must decide when to pick each block and begin the journey of transforming beautifullyripened fruit into exceptionally crafted wine.

With this in mind, we decided that starting with our first harvest we would keep a journal recording this transformation fromgrape to wine and from these experiences Fortnight was born.

Where we stand is so much more than soil. This is Hallowed Ground, a silent, solemnlegacy of determination and tenderness. Combinedwith grit and endurance, and faith in spite ofit all . We call them Heritage vineyards, because they stand in testament to thosegrandfathers and great-grandfathers who, asfar back as 1850, brought their vines to Californiain search of a new beginning and asustainable way of life. These dry-farmed vineyardsproduce extraordinary little fruit. Eachand every vine is hand-tended in a centuriesoldtradition. But love is love, and passion isgreater than profit. These farmers have taughttheir children to fulfill on a promise: Protectand nurture these vineyards against all odds. And generation after generation, the vineyardscontinue to repay them with intense and livelyfruit. The commitment these families havemade to such a hardscrabble life can belikened to the vines themselves: The youngmay defy all expectations, but the strengthand determination of the old are to berevered. Here, many sacrifices have beenmade. This wine is our tribute to the memoryof them.NOSE:Ripe, sweet blackberry notes are well balancedby vanilla and hints of cinnamon and smokedbacon.PALATE FLAVORS:This wine showcases sweet, dark fruits with loads ofbaking spices that are showcased by a soft, smoothtexture that finishes with great breadth.PALATE TEXTURE:Very soft entry, big, broad tannins are balanced, sweetness on the finish, not too cloying.

Tadeo and I had talked about Rhône varietal blends ever since Daniel Brunier broached the subject with us during a trip toVieux Télégraphe in 2005. Finding the right grapes was always the underlying concern. Seven years ago, Tadeo and I firstvisited the Mourvèdre vineyard planted by Greg Adams at the old Rossi Vineyard in the central Sonoma highlands. The newowner Paul Otellini had replanted a small block to non-clonal selections of Mourvèdre, and the vineyard was breathtaking.

About that same time, Markus Bokisch introduced us to his Grenache vineyard in the Sierra foothills AVA of Clements Hills - abeautiful parcel of non-clonal Grenache planted on an outcropping of quartz. Along with Frank Evangelho's old-vine Carignanvineyard in Oakley, we had the elements for our version of a Rhône Blend. We named it Sage Canyon Red, after the locationof our wineryWS 91$15.99 BTG

23 years later, we note the many highlights we've enjoyed over the years - reviews from four prominent wine critics on the 8bottlings of Cabernet Sauvignon we have made from this 10-acre parcel in Napa's Conn Valley. Every score was 90 POINTS orhigher. We are now releasing the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon 'Neyers Ranch.' We think it's the finest wine we've made fromthe grapes grown on our property, combining the strength and power of hillside vineyards, with the elegant touch Tadeobrings to winemaking. Not only was 2012 a textbook vintage for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, but these vines are now20 years old and just entering the 'Sweet Spot' of their productive years.
