In South Australia, through the University’s expertise in Indonesian language and culture, Flinders has utilised one of Australia’s few Pendopos (Javanese cultural pavilion) on campus to engage the local community in Indonesian cultural activities. Flinders is committed to continuing its long and close association with Indonesia, and with its active Indonesian student cohort and close to 1000 alumni in Indonesia – many of whom hold positions in government, academia and the professions – the University is well poised to strengthen people to people linkages in Australia and Indonesia. Building on this history, and linking directly to the implementation of the South Australian Government’s South East Asian engagement strategy, Flinders University is establishing ‘Jembatan’ (bridge), an initiative to coordinate key Flinders community activities with Indonesia in 2015-2016. Jembatan will form a cornerstone of the University’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2016. The Jembatan initiative will provide a vehicle for working with a wide range of Indonesian and South Australian community and business organisations, professional associations, government agencies and schools; with the aim to establish a ‘Rumah Budaya’ (Indonesian Cultural House) in South Australia. Flinders is responding to the Indonesian Government’s interest in establishing a Rumah Budaya in a number of countries around the world to promote Indonesian language and culture. Jembatan Building bridges between Australia and Indonesia A 50th anniversary initiative of Flinders University

Since its establishment in 1966, Flinders University has forged strong and enduring research and teaching linkages in Indonesia.
