Congratulations to Todd Vollstedt who was named the 2017 San Dieguito H.S. Academy Teacher of the Year. Mr. Voll- stedt teaches Integrated Math II and Math Readiness. Mr. Vollstedt has been a teacher for 32 years and at SDA for two years. In that time, he has already been recognized as a dedicated and hardworking teacher. In addition to teaching, Mr. Vollstedt coaches Track & Field and Cross Country and announces the SDA basketball games. He LOVES running! Mr. Vollstedt enjoys most sports and participates in any way he can. Coaching cross country and track are a true joy for him. ―I have always wanted to help others and serve. Teaching allows me the op- portunity to help advance others’ goals and ambitions,‖ says Mr. Vollstedt. His accessibility of students for extra help throughout the day encourages his students to ask questions. He lets them know from the first day, that no matter what experience they've had with math, they can choose to form good habits and learn the material. Ms. Shayegan who team teaches with Mr. Vollstedt says, ―His instruction is clear and he provides time for practice and repetition until the processes are internalized. He takes the time to email parents daily for all of his clas- ses to keep them informed of the ma- terial covered each day and the home- work that is due the next day.‖ Mr. Vollstedt holds his students to the same standards and reinforces that hard work pays off. He makes a point of explaining why they’re learning certain skills and how it will help them in future math classes. He is timely in communicating with students, staff and parents. He always gets right back to you. He takes an active role with his students and attends all IEPs/504s. ―I motivate students by teaching them at their present level of proficiency. I make sure the pace of instruction is appropriate and not over- whelming. I provide students with multi- ple opportunities to demonstrate mas- tery. I model enthusiasm when I am teaching,‖ exclaims Mr. Vollstedt. Mr. Vollstedt believes in redemption and will let students recoup points if they attend a tutorial and perform better on a retest (which is more work for him to benefit them). He grades tests and quizzes the day students complete them so that they have im- mediate feedback, and he can deter- mine if more instruction is needed on particular skills before moving on to new material. ―Success is what in- creases motivation. As students ex- perience success, they tend to work harder to attain more success,‖ says Mr. Vollstedt. Freshman David Pe- rez says, ―Mr. Vollstedt is kind of strict, but he cares about students and is a really good teacher.‖ Sophomore Kylie Alvaraz says, ―Whenever we are in class he is so attentive. It’s not just a math class, he inspires us to do better in every class. He is awesome to have as a teacher.‖ Ms. Shayegan has wit- nessed firsthand the personal and academic gains students achieve after a term in his class and says, ―I'm honored to be a part of it. I wish I had a math teacher like Mr. Vollstedt when I was in high school!‖ Jeanne Jones is San Dieguito. Her kindness, earnestness, and heart have helped to shape SDA and her caring for stu- dents, families, and all members of the San Die- guito community is profound. Dur- ing a Homeroom Olympics scavenger hunt last year, Mr. Paige snapped a picture of Dr. Jones with some students. In that photo you can see joy on every face, a closeness that feels so comfortable and right, and the true connec- tion between student and administrator that is hard to fathom. Founding principal of SDA Fran Fenical says, ―Thank you to a beloved and respect- ed leader in the creation of SDA. Jeanne's involvement was inspira- tional, from learning how to build a 4x4, designing homeroom, envisioning our school culture, to genuinely caring about students and staff. Jeanne has always been true to our vision, and her legacy will live on." Students love Dr. Jones. Parents love Dr. Jones. Colleagues love her too, and for those of us who have the privilege and pleasure to work closely with her every day, her strength, integrity, and caring is as evi- dent as her SDA spirit is to all who see her on campus. She is a San Dieguito treasure. We wish Jeanne Jones all the very best in retirement and thank her for all she’s done for students during her illustrious career. AP exams are from May 1 to May 12. 2 SAN DIEGUITO ACADEMY

Congratulations to our SDA registrar, Bridget Sabin, who is the SDA Classified Employee of the Year, the San Dieguito Union H.S. District Employee of the Year, and we just found out that out of 42 school districts she has been selected to represent San Diego County as Classified Em-ployee of the Year. What an honor! Ms. Sabin is one of the founding staff members when SDA opened in September 1996. Her dedication and commitment to building the new school was integral to the way we function even today. Ms. Sabin is hard working, kind, positive, highly skilled at her job, and a life long learner.

Assistant principal, Dr. Jeanne Jones says, ―Ms. Sabin treats every person with the utmost re-spect and is dedicated to helping each individual. She embodies what is best about San Dieguito Academy and is a role model for others to follow.‖ Ms. Sabin’s colleagues look to her for guid-ance and expertise. Ms. Sabin reflects warmth and personal connection that we strive to build in our schools. We cannot think of anyone better to represent our school, the San Dieguito Union H.S. District, and the ENTIRE county. This honor is well-deserved, and we are very proud to have Ms. Sabin as part of our great staff!

San Dieguito H.S. Academy English and speech and debate teacher, Ms. Lily Bolig was honored by the San Diego/Imperial Valley Speech & De-bate League as Coach of the Year! Ms. Bolig puts in many long hours after school, late night and all day tournaments, traveling, coaching and supporting our team, running tourna-ments, hosting events, supporting and giving aid to other coaches in our league, and all with a friendly and calm disposition despite how crazy things can get. She is an inspiration to her students, her colleagues and the league.

More good news… this is the fourth year in a row that SDA will be sending students to the State Tournament in Arcadia. Congratulations to junior Kylie Ade (Expository Speaking) and

alternates, juniors Jason Kesler and Kevin Ward, (Parliamentary Debate), and freshman, Madelyn Flores (Original Prose and Poetry).

Kylie Ade and Jason Kesler with their trophies

along with Lily Bolig.

Spring is in the air. Here at San Dieguito that means lots of students playing ball and run-ning track out under the March sun. Our ASB students are busy planning the Spring As-sembly, prom, and an ultimate frisbee tour-nament. Our creative writers are working on this year’s ―Thread,‖ and all of our students are shaking off the wet winter and setting their sights on finishing the year well.

In classes, students are cooking and collaborating, painting and practicing in-struments. We’ve added new courses this year, and that means students out at elementary schools learning what it means to be a teach-er, and other students cut-ting into cats to see what it

means to be a scientist.

But despite the maelstrom of activity, San Dieguito students know that part of what makes us human is giving back. Not long ago our Future Woodworkers Club created ―Kindness Benches‖ for local elementary schools, one of our students is sponsoring a ―Kid’s 4 Peace‖ Book Drive, and this week our theater department wraps Snow Angel, its annual “Theater for a Cause” show, the proceeds benefitting the good work of the Community Resource Center.

Whatever it is that students are interested in: robotics, music, academics, there is some-thing to do: Our robotics team won at the FIRST Tournament in Del Mar and is next headed for Texas for nationals, musicians will delight at the spring concert in May, and our Mustang Minds team competes at home next week.

It that’s not enough, how about a Homeroom Olympics scavenger hunt on St. Patrick’s Day?

“But despite the

maelstrom of

activity, San

Dieguito students

know that part of

what makes us

human is giving

back.”

If this whirlwind of activity has your heart racing, in April our Student Support Ser-vices Committee is bringing back the pup-pies. Twice a year San Dieguito students enjoy an event called ―Canine Unwind.‖ Dozens of service and therapy dogs gather with their owners at our bell tower and for an hour or so after school the students can just pet a dog. Spring has sprung here at SDA, and we’re galloping toward the sum-mer!

Mr. Paige takes a pie on Pi Day!

Thanks for a great two years Mr. Paige. We will miss all you do for students and staff! Best of luck on your new position in Oregon. They are lucky to have you!

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of San Dieguito H.S. and San Dieguito H.S. Acad-emy, Mr. Paige has been interviewing and talking to former students through the dec-ades. Check out Mr. Paige’s Twitter for all the great interviews and his final thoughts on the big anniversary. Mr. Paige says, ―Like our students today, and students I’ve met who attended from 1936 until today, I believe that eighty years from now it will be the students who attend San Dieguito who define San Dieguito. Theirs’ will be the sto-ry told by some future historian, stories of adventure and connections that tell of young people striving to be themselves while being part of something bigger than themselves.‖ Go to https://twitter.com/BjornPaige.

Hello SDA parents! Here’s a little update of SDA’s activities and events put on by our hard working ASB students. The Winter Formal and Dodge-ball Tournament took place in February. The Winter Formal, which was put on by the sophomore directors, took place at the Port Pavilion in San Diego with 1,000 students. We’d like to say thanks again to all the parents that volunteered for coat check and general supervision. Your help is always appreciated! The Dodgeball Tournament was very exciting with Ms. Vazquez-Herrera’s homeroom taking home the win (pictured right).

Here are our upcoming events at SDA:

Student vs. Staff softball game, April 19, lunch: Students play staff members in a friendly competitive game of softball.

Spring Assembly, April 28: During this extended homeroom we bring the whole school together with school spirit and information including the presentation of the Teacher of the Year, sports, student life and prom vide-os.

Blood Drive, May 16, 8-1 in the gym: The Blood Drive is open to the com-munity and students 16 years and older.

Prom, May 20, 8:00-11:30 p.m.: This year, the prom is on the Hornblower Boat which will tour around the San Diego Bay and go underneath the Coronado Bridge. If you’d like to chaperone, contact Mr. Rod Keillor, [email protected].

Exhibition Day, May 26: Exhibition Day is one of the most exciting days of the year. We will have four different exhibit periods throughout the day where students are able to show off their talents and sell their creations. There’s tons of activities and fun things going on throughout the whole day!

Thank you SDA parents for all that you do! ASB hopes to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment that helps our school community grow closer and stronger together! Here’s to a wonderful rest of 2017!

This winter, students had the opportunity for three figure and portrait ses-sions with fine artist, Leon Okun. The class was organized due to strong student interest and was paid for by a generous grant by our SDA Founda-tion. Our final model, as requested by students, was former Visual Art teacher, Neal Glasgow.

SDA’s Robotics Team Paradox 2102 takes home the win and are Regional Champions!! Team Paradox is now going to Houston to take on the best that Ameri-ca (and many other countries) has to offer. Mr. Stim-son, a Team Paradox coach says, ―The Finals matches were amazing - teetering back and forth second by second. The resulting scores were sepa-rated by the smallest of margins. The first match saw a score of 290 to 296. The second match was even closer 305 to 307! When the dust had settled and the results were finally posted we pulled it off! Regional Champions!‖ Congratulations team members and coaches -- we are very proud of your hard work, ded-ication and skill.

Congratulations to Sofia Piedrafita-Ortiz, Luke Fosgett, Zackery Edwards, Sophia Liedtke, and Louis Milne for their recent participation in the All State Honor Bands. These students were selected to Honor Bands that performed at the annual California Music Educator’s Conference in San Jose, California. This is a huge accomplishment for these students and we are very proud of their efforts! On March 4, the Wind Ensemble I performed at the El Camino Band and Orchestra Festival. The group received a Unani-mous Superior rating, meaning that all three adjudica-tors gave a rating of Superior. It was a truly outstand-ing performance. The group also performed the same literature at the San Diego Winds Composer Festival on March 18. The Wind Ensemble II also performed its festival literature at the March 18 event.

We have a Spring Jazz Concert on Wednesday, April 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Liggett Theater. We will feature a few great vocalists and play several vocal standards.

Our Spring Concert & Awards Night is scheduled for May 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the SDA Gymnasium. The theme of the concert is ―Animation.‖ The music is real-ly fun! We will conclude the program with our senior slideshow and combined bands finale. You won’t want to miss this year-end concert. For more event infor-mation, please visit our website at sdamusic.org.

Senior Mary Ford earned a superior award for her feature writing skills March 4 at the first San Diego County high school journal-ism competition in 10 years. Ten other SDA students also brought home awards.

The event drew contestants from through-out the county and marked the renewal of the local Journalism Education Association (JEA) organization.

Ford’s story was a profile of a former con-testant from the television show ―Survivor.‖ In addition, in that feature writing category, junior Kieran Zimmer and sophomore Tay-lor Rudman won excellence awards for their pieces and sophomore Alexandra Joelson and junior Taylor Gates scored honorable mentions.

In the news competition, junior Kate Se-queira and freshman Joice He received excellent commendations for their stories, and sophomores Alexis Price and Sim-mone Stearn were honorable mentions. In the opinion competition, senior Linnea Leidy earned an excellent award for her work, and junior Mallika Seshadri received an honorable mention.

Some of the students will qualify to com-pete in the Southern California JEA contest March 25 in Long Beach.

For the first time since its founding 5 years ago, the San Dieguito Academy Science Olympiad team ranked in the top 10 in three events, receiving medals for 3rd place, 5th place, and 9th place. Returning to their favorite event, Elizabeth Anderson and Megan Levan refined their skills in scientific communication and earned their 1st medal for 3rd place in the Write-It-Do-It event, then went on to re-engineer their electric vehicle from last year resulting in a 5th place finish in the Electric Vehicle competition. Delilah Forrest and Hana Chen returned to compete in the Forensic Event, where they tested their observation and analytical abilities, wining 9th place in the event.

Annually each February, SDA sends budding engineers and scientists to test their STEM knowledge and skills against teams from across San Diego County. This year 78 teams competed in the 2017 San Diego Regional Science Olympiad Competition.

To prepare for this tournament, students select from a choice of 23 different events that include disciplines in the earth sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering fields. The tourna-ment requires students to study, research, design and build devic-es in areas as diverse as Astron-omy, Optics, Forensics, Robotics and Biotechnology.

Top Winners (l to r) Megan Levan, Elizabeth Anderson, Delilah

Forest, Kirsten Mueller, and Hana Chen. These SDA students all placed in the San Diego County Journalism Education Write-off competition March 4. They are, l to r, freshman Joice He; sophomores Taylor Rudman, Alexis Price, Simmone Stearn, and Alexandra Joelson; senior Kate Sequeira; and juniors Kieran Zimmer and Taylor Gates. The SDA 2016-17 season is continuing to impress audi-ences. Snow Angel just wrapped up with its wonderful performances. All proceeds from that show benefitted the Encinitas Community Resource Center. Our next show will be a compilation of short comedies entitled Funny Business. It will be performed on April 27, 28, 29, May 4, 5, and 6. After that we will be transported to the 1950’s for William Inge's Picnic, a classic that follows the residents of a

small town in Kansas as they are affected by a newcomer's arrival. This show will be performed on June 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, and 10. Please visit the SDA Theatre web page for more details and follow SDA Theatre on Facebook and Instagram for updates. Also, the Thespian meetings are Tuesdays at lunch. All students are welcome to get in-volved with our department!

On March 14, San Dieguito H.S. Academy held its annual lunch Pi Day celebration honoring the math number approxi-mated by 3.14. The staff was treated to a variety of pies from

our Culinary Arts class. Students participated in reciting the digits of pi. Each student who memorized at least the first 17 digits received a coupon for a free burrito from Chipotle. Cecilia Martinez recited 299 digits to take first place! Stu-dents also participated in a pie-eating contest, cookie decorating (and eating)

and had the chance to throw a pie at a teacher or the principal. The top three students in the digit memorization contest received coupons for a free apple turnover from Culinary Arts, passes to a theatre production, a Comedy Sportz game, and some free cafeteria food tokens.

Thanks Mr. Paul Brice and the math depart-ment for another great Pi Day.

The SDA Varsity Mustang Minds team competed against Sage Creek H.S. at the ITV studios on the SDCOE campus. This match will be aired on April 13th at 7:00 p.m. on ITV 16. The team also got a studio tour.

How parents can help their juniors get ready for college

Use the Counseling Website. Start with the school website: www.sd.sduhsd.net and click on Coun-seling.

Explore Naviance and do a college search, career interest inventory and more! Share the results together.

Colleges like to see students progres-sively challenge themselves in their coursework. Support your student in taking more challenging courses.

Register for an SAT and an ACT to be done in the spring of the junior year. Some colleges still require SAT Subject tests, too. They are optional for the UC campuses.

Encourage your student to take the CAASPP (standardized test) seriously. They may be exempt for placement tests with a good score.

Start exploring college campuses and create a list of possible options.

There are some scholarships and book awards available for juniors. Go to Naviance to explore.

The summer between junior and senior year is important to show person-al growth. Support your student in doing something meaningful: job, volun-teering, community college course, sum-mer program, etc.

Naviance & College/Career Preparation We encourage all students and families to activate their student and family accounts to receive all available resources in pre- paring for the college and career admis-sions process to include 4 year universi-ties, 2 year community colleges, and oth-er private and/or technical schools.

Your Family Connections account in Navi-ance is a comprehensive website that you can use to help in making plans about colleges and careers. Family Connection is linked with Naviance Succeed, a ser-vice that we use in our office to track and analyze data about college and career plans so it provides up to date information that’s specific to our school.

Your Family Connection account allows you to:

Get involved in the planning and advising process—Build a resume, complete online surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines for making de-cisions about colleges and careers.

Research colleges—Compare GPA, standardized test scores, and other statistics to actual historical data from our school and students who have ap-plied and been admitted in the past.

Research careers—Research hun-

dreds of careers and career clusters, and take career assessments like the Do What You Are test.

Create plans for the future—Build course plans, create goals and to-do’s and complete tasks assigned to you by the school to better prepare yourself for your future college and career goals.

Family Connection also lets us share information with you about upcoming meetings and college visits, local schol-arship opportunities, and other re-sources for college and career infor-mation. You can also use the site to stay in communication with the counsel-ing office.

Registration meetings were held where counselors met with all stu-dents and showed them step by step how to choose their classes and complete the Course Selection Contract. They covered high school graduation and college admission requirements. After completing the Course Selection Contract, students went online to enter their classes. To follow up, counselors met with every student individually to collect the form and check the classes they entered online. They did this through the students’ second period class.

Counselors enjoy this opportunity to meet individually with the stu-dents and feel it provides a more accurate list of selected courses. Since they do schedul-ing for the entire year, they want the students to be thoughtful about their choices for the next school year. All students can view their list of courses in their Aeries Infor-mation Portal account in Au-

gust. Students can then see their counselor at Taking Care of Busi-ness Days for any questions or concerns. (See page 8 for Taking Care of Business Days dates and times.)

SDA is proud to have 99% of our students attend

college the fall after graduation.

The post high school statistics from our senior class of 2016 are as follows:

67% attending four-year university

32% attending community college

Of the 67% going to 4-year university:

19% CSU

6 SAN DIEGUITO ACADEMY

Dear SDA Parents,

While we are a community of diversity and differing skills, talents, careers and desires, we are also a community that shares a common goal – a commit-ment to having our kids, and all SDA kids, have a quality educational experi-ence that celebrates their talents, sup-ports their challenges and nurtures them – heart, mind and soul. It’s a lofty, but attainable goal. One that requires partnership, participation and commit-ment from all aspects of the school – students, staff and parents.

As parents your support is key to hav-ing SDA be a place where our students thrive. Support can happen in a wide variety of ways: As part of one of our many parent booster groups, financially and with your time and talent. Here are a few of the ways that the SDA Foun-dation could use your support:

Support Grad Nite – This gradua-

tion night event for the graduating seniors is a fun all-night carnival held on campus and run entirely by over 200 parent volunteers, and over 80% of the senior class attends. The vol-unteers have almost as much fun as the graduates.

Considering giving to the Mustang Fund – The money raised through the Mustang Fund goes directly towards programs that support all of our stu-dents. This year’s fund has not met our goals which will impact our ability to provide as much support to teachers, programs and new innovative ideas set forth by our students and staff. Please consider donating by going to: www.sdafoundation.com.

Contribute to the Endowment Fund — For the first time, we have created an Endowment Fund that will provide a legacy of funding for SDA programs for future students and gen-erations of Mustangs.

Give of your time by signing up to volunteer when a sign-up is sent out. Periodically, we send out volunteer opportunities to support events being held throughout the school. Your par-ticipation of a couple hours makes a huge difference.

Come to TEDxEncinitas on April 1st.

We are holding our first ever TEDx event here at SDA on April 1st, but true to SDA form, we are switching it up as we believe youth have much to teach adults.

So we are having a completely youth speaker line-up with a completely adult audience. Not all of the speak- ers are SDA students, but all 12 are phenomenal! Seats are limited. To register go to:

www.TEDxEncinitas.com.

As we begin the final quarter for this year, I want to take a moment to thank you for all the ways you make a differ-ence, for the memories that have been made this year and for being a part of the incredible community that is San Dieguito Academy.

SDA is not one student, one teacher or one parent – it’s ALL of us adding our part to the fabric that makes this school extraordinary!

Sincerely,

Bobbi Cecio

SDA Foundation president

SDA moves into the track and field season setting its sights on sending a full team to CIF championships this year, led by a talented group of freshman and sophomores as well as seasoned veterans.

The varsity golf team has a lot of developing talent with four new freshmen joining. Overall, we still have a young competitive team with three returning players who qualified for CIF last season. The team goal is to qualify for CIF and finish in the top five for Division 2.

The baseball team will rely on a good pitching staff and strong defense to make this 2017 season successful, and it returns eight letter-men from last season.

Boys’ lacrosse is on the rise with 16 returning players from last year’s squad, while youth will be served on the girls’ lacrosse team after a great turn out for tryouts.

Come out and enjoy some exciting Mustang sports action this season.

Spring is in the air. Before we change seasons, we need to congratulate a win-ter sport — Girls’ Soccer won the Division 4 CIF title 1-0. They advanced to the State Tournament reaching the semi-final game.

Now on to spring. We had two CIF champs from the spring season last year, tennis and boys volleyball. The tennis team only lost one senior from last year’s team and is hoping to continue its recent success.

The boys’ volleyball team is just the oppo-site having lost a lot of players from last year’s championship team. This year’s team had a lot of interest having 26 play-ers come to tryouts. The resulting team is young and energetic.

The softball team is also young with no returning seniors. Its preseason will in-clude the North County, Cougar Classic, and Falcon Fiesta tournaments which will offer strong playing experience for our very competitive league.

Thanks to all of our wonderful parent volunteers. We are thank-

ful for all the things you do: chaperone, drive, provide snacks for

students, help us with mailings, help us with school events,

coordinate staff appreciation, and much, much more! SDA is lucky to have such

active and involved parents. We couldn’t do it without your help.

Thanks for a great year!

The San Diego County Master Chefs Culinary Competition for high schools took place last month. Culinary Arts teacher, Mr. Scott Huntley, and his master chef stu-dents took home first place! The high school teams had to demonstrate their culinary knowledge, skills and abilities by preparing two identical entrees which include the five components: protein, starch, vegetable, sauce, edible garnish – on two burners in one hour! In addition the students were evaluated in areas such as safety, sanita-tion, cooking procedures and their finished products. Executive chefs from across the county judged the competition. What an exciting win for our Culinary Arts class Master Chef students and Mr. Huntley.
