ROY McGRATH SEEKS TO MAKE MEMORIES AS ONE FOR ALL

T E N O R S A X O P H O N I S T R O Y M C G R A T H ’ S 9 - 9 - 9 Plan seemed solid: Nine performances for his quartet in nine plazas in nine cities in Mexico, whose government had awarded him an arts grant to make it happen.

Then, on November 9, 2016, an official from the Mexican government contacted him with an update.

“They had cancelled seven of the nine gigs, ‘Because of the recent changes in the political atmosphere between the U.S. and Mexico,’ ” McGrath recalled being told. “We all know what that means. It really bummed me out, man, because I didn’t think the election was going to affect the arts so quickly.”

Angered but undeterred, McGrath still took his quartet to Mexico and secured five new club dates. “My friends in Mexico bailed us out,” he said. “We didn’t get paid as much money, but we still played. So, it wasn’t a total loss.”

McGrath’s international excursions have continued. Last month, his new quartet, which he has named Remembranzas, toured three countries in Asia: Singapore, South Korea, and China. He talked about the tour with this publication before departing. (Dulwich International, a British college system based in China, sponsored the tour.) Remembranzas, he explained, is a Spanish word that means memory. The word memory, in Spanish, is memoria. Remembranzas, the Puerto Rican native added, “is a memory that touches the heart, a memory that is deep and has feeling. It is a memory that you’re not going to forget twenty, thirty, forty years from now.” Such memories, he added, were explored on Martha, his first album released in 2015 that honored his late grandmother.

Remembranzas’ roots were formed through a commission McGrath received from the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center, located on West Armitage. This initiative combined poetry with Latin and Afro-Caribbean jazz. McGrath retained several songs from this effort and then composed new material for an album he and his fellow cats – pianist Bill Cessna, bassist Kitt Lyles, and drummer Jonathan Wenzel – will record once they return home.

This new album, McGrath promised, will be driven by Afro-Caribbean rhythms from his native land.

“It will have plena and bomba, which are the two primary Black rhythms in Puerto Rico,” he said. “We will also have son and montuno from Cuba, and a lot of clave-oriented music. I’m also looking to add percussionists to

see how that vibes, and there are several guest speakers that will recite poetry.”

All eight songs on this future recording, McGrath continued, contain memories from family, friends, and life events – even ones he chooses not to discuss – connected to them. One song “Mira Asi,” translated from the Spanish, is a personal appeal that means, “I would like for you to see things this way.” While the title is derived from a specific person’s name, he explained, the song’s intent is designed to be inclusive.

“It’s a call for people to see things in a positive light, and for people to understand that, sometimes, things happen for a reason,” McGrath explained. “If you look at things from the wrong way, then you’re never going to grow.”

For Wenzel, this song’s “cloudy mystique” introduction and segue into a beautiful melody creates memorable tension.

“The chords are super lush and full,” the percussionist said. “For me, playing this song has been a chance to explore these rhythms and figure out how to apply them to the drum set.”

Another McGrath original, “Cancion de La Verdad Sencilla,” is the title of a poem written by Julia de Burgos. In English, the title means, “Song of the Simple Truth.” An excerpt reads: “He and I are one/Self and forever in wounds/Self and forever in consciousness/Self and forever in joy.”

“She was one of the first female poets in Latin America to write about women’s rights,” McGrath said about du Burgos, who died in 1953 at age 39. “I like the poem so much I wrote a song about it. Hopefully, I will figure out a way to have someone recite the poem (on the album,)”

Leading a quartet that performs his compositions, McGrath continued, involves dispensing and receiving direction.

“I make sure my band members have a very open approach to this music,” he said. “And this lends itself to a very free, expressive music that is a democracy. That’s what jazz is about.”

Performing in Remembranzas, Wenzel added, is productive, thanks to the positive tone established by its leader.

“Roy makes the decisions, but he takes the opinions and experiences of each band member seriously,” Wenzel said. “He values what we see in the music so that we’re able to run through the songs and reformulate them. It’s always a collaborative effort.” n

FROM CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOL JAZZ BAND PROGRAMS TO THE CHICAGO JAZZ FESTIVAL

F O R T H E P A S T 1 4 Y E A R S T H E J A Z Z

Institute has co-sponsored Chicago Public Schools’ Citywide Jazz Band Competition (now called Chicago Public Schools Elementary and High School Jazz Band Festival) as part of our effort to support CPS’ jazz band teachers and their programs. The event has grown from 7 schools participating in the first few years to the 14 schools and 19 ensembles and combos that will compete this year. at Kenwood Academy High School. In 2007 we began offering a slot at the Chicago Jazz Festival to the highest ranking band and in 2009 we created the Young Jazz Lions stage at the festival that has given the opportunity for almost 1000 CPS students to perform at a world class festival.

The Jazz Band Competition is adjudicated by some

of Chicago’s top jazz artists who also deliver onstage clinics that give students, teachers and audience insights into what can turn a good sound into a great one. “I’ve learned so much listening to the clinics every year” said Lauren Deutsch Executive Director. “It’s wonderful to see the level of passion and professionalism exhibited by all of the participants.”

The day long competition is open to the public, and a great opportunity to show encouragement and support for these young jazz musicians.
