DON’T TRY TO PHASE, JUST FACE IT.
Jcrt. CA. SILPA SHAJAN
Once on a full moon day, Krishna and Balarama were walking in the forest, it was
late and they decided to rest in the forest for the night. It was a dangerous
forest, so Krishna suggested "Baladeva, you keep watch until midnight while I
sleep, and I will be on watch from midnight till morning." They both agreed and
Krishna went to sleep.
A few hours passed, Krishna was sleeping sound. Balarama heard a growl
at a distance, it was a terrifying sound. He walked a little further towards the
sound. Now he could see a gigantic monster approaching him. The monster
growled again, Balarama was very afraid, he trembled in fear.
Every time he trembled, the monster grew double in size. The monster grew
bigger and bigger as it approached Balarama. Now the monster was standing
very close to Balarama, it growled again. Terrified by the sound, size and terrible
smell of the monster Balarama screamed "Krishna! Krishna!" and collapsed and
fell unconscious.
Woken up by the call, Krishna followed the sound and found Balarama sleeping,
Krishna thought, 'It must be my turn now' and started walking to and fro. Slowly
Krishna recognized the monster standing nearby.
The monster growled at Krishna. "What do you want?" Krishna asked unafraid.
The size of the monster decreased, it shrunk to half its size. "What are you
doing here?" Krishna asked again and the monster shrunk again. Krishna kept
questioning it expecting a reply, the monster kept shrinking every time he asked.
Now the monster was just 2 inches tall, and looked cute and adorable. Krishna
took it in his hand and placed it in his waist pocket. The night passed and
Balarama woke in the morning. Balarama saw Krishna and joyously shouted
"Krishna! Krishna!".
"Krishna! You don't know what a terrible thing happened while you were
asleep. There was huge monster trying to kill us both. I don't know how
we survived; the last thing I remember is that I fainted." Balarama said
trying to recall yesterday night's events. Krishna took out the little monster out
of his pocket and said, "Is this the same monster?"
"Yes, but it was so big! how did it shrink?" asked Balarama. "Every time I
questioned it, it shrunk in size, finally it became this."
Balarama told Krishna how the monster grew yesterday every time he was scared
of it.
Then Krishna concluded "Every time we are afraid, our fears grow big, but
every time we face them and question them, they become smaller and
smaller."
The Moral is:
When you avoid what you must face, the situation becomes bigger than
you, and takes control over you.
When you face what you must face, you become bigger than the situation,
and you take control over it.
Dear Friends,
This is a part of a motivational talk I heard recently on a website. I thought deeply,
yes, it’s true. We avoid or rather postpone many things due to the fear that we will
have to FACE it.
But isn’t it true that we will HAVE TO FACE IT someday or the other? By that time
we could have grown weaker than we were before. As Sri Buddha said: “FEAR IS
OUR GREATEST ENEMY. IT STEALS OFF OUR CONFIDENCE AS WELL AS OUR
OPPORTUNITIES”. This is what we should teach our children. Let it be exams,
competitions or anything for that matter. Our children should be trained to take it
up rather than to turn their face away from it due to many reasons whatsoever.
Why defer or postpone things! Do the things which you plan as soon as possible
and it will help build your confidence and personality.
Don’t try to PHASE just FACE it.

A DREAM UNEXPLAINED
Jcrt. CA. SWAPNA MANOJ
I haven’t properly slept those nights. The same nightmare was haunting me again
and again. I was happy when I got a gap of 3-4 days, but then again on the 5th
day, the same thing came to my dreams. We were in Dubai and I was on a short
break from my career, due to my second delivery. So I started spending my day
time doing research on this particular dream and it naturally ended up in repeating
the dream during night time.
This is how my ‘dream’ was……We were in the midst of a massive earthquake and a
flood; everyone was fleeing to save their lives. Our family was also among them.
We took to streets in the midnight after hearing an alarm announcement from the
Authorities, there was no electricity, only the moonlight. Somehow we reached
where the car is parked. We were speeding through a road that goes parallel to the
sea. Suddenly the ocean was raised 100 times above us, but without falling to the
shore. All were shouting and screaming because at any moment the water could fall
on the land and we would be part of ocean. But some force was holding the water
without falling to the land and people were struggling to be as far as they could
from the sea shore. Somehow we reached on the top of a tower far from the sea
and then came the next disaster. We could see from far, stars falling down to the
sea as very big fire balls. The phenomenon was continuing and nearing us, stars
started falling down to the land also. With the scare of water on one side and fire
on the other, my heart beats were going faster and faster. Fortunately, every time I
used to wake up before the heart ‘STOPS’.
As I told you, those days, my day time was spent on research on dreams and the
reasons for their recurrence. As everyone would do, I also took the help of Google
to interpret my dreams, but it could not help much. As recommended by him
(Google), I resorted to Sigmund Freud’s book, “Interpretation of Dreams”. I only
got more confused. I tried my level best to forget about it while going to bed, but
that definitely couldn’t help. Gradually, I started getting proper sleep and the
nightmare remained only a topic of interest during my discussions with friends and
colleagues.
Almost after 2 years, in the last months of 2009, I was shocked to see the trailers
of the movie “2012”, directed by Rolland Emmerich. Some of the scenes in the
movie had a dangerous similarity with my dreams. Since the movie had a hint of
‘end of the world by 2012’, I had a very negative feeling that I had foreseen the
scenes in my dreams, 2 years back. Even though I kept quiet due to this bad
feeling, some of my friends who were ‘forced’ to listen to my story of nightmare,
several times in the past, called me and pointed out the similarity of concepts
depicted in the movie. For those who didn’t recognize, I opted not to remind them.
To tell the truth, until December 2012, when the world was ‘supposed to’ come to
an end, I had a guilty feeling that, if, by any chance, something happens to Mother
Earth, I am also to be blamed. Fortunately, I am in 2015 now, very much alive in
this beautiful Earth. But even now that dream of mine and its recurrence remains
unexplained.

What Is KYC - Know Your Customer ?
Jcrt. SARIKA RAMACHANDRAN
KYC is an acronym for “Know your Customer”, a term used for customer
identification process. It involves making reasonable efforts to determine true
identity and beneficial ownership of accounts, source of funds, the nature of
customer’s business, reasonableness of operations in the account in relation to the
customer’s business, etc which in turn helps the banks to manage their risks
prudently. The objective of the KYC guidelines is to prevent banks being used,
intentionally or unintentionally by criminal elements for money laundering.
KYC has two components - Identity and Address. While identity remains the same,
the address may change and hence the banks are required to periodically update
their records.
Reserve Bank of India has issued guidelines to banks under Section 35A of
the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 and Rule 7 of Prevention of Money-
Laundering (Maintenance of Records of the Nature and Value of
Transactions, the Procedure and Manner of Maintaining and Time for
Furnishing Information and Verification and Maintenance of Records of the
Identity of the Clients of the Banking Companies, Financial Institutions and
Intermediaries) Rules, 2005. Any contravention thereof or non-compliance
shall attract penalties under Banking Regulation Act. There are two aspects
of Customer Identification. One is establishing identity and the other is
establishing present residential address.
For establishing identity, the bank requires any authentic document carrying photo
of the customer such as driving licence/ passport/ pan card/ voters' card etc.
Though these documents carry the residential address of the customer, it may not
be the present address. Therefore, in order to establish the present address of the

Istanbul: Memories and the City by Orhan Pamuk
Publisher – Faber; Year of Publication – 2005; Pages – 336;
Cost at the time of purchase – Rs. 350
Istanbul is a city with many fading memories. Founded in 330
AD, it began as the most glorious city of the Christian world and for most part of
the next thousand years it would remain so. In Ottoman hands from 1453, the
city’s new owners made it the greatest city of the Islam world. But with the fall of
the Ottoman, came the fall of this ancient city. Having lost its political primacy to
Ankara, Istanbul has been on a slow and sad decline in the past century.
Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk is among the most celebrated authors of modern
Turkey. His work “Istanbul: Memories and the City” is a semi autobiographical story
about him and the city of his birth. Born in 1952 after the revolution of Ataturk,
Pamuk grew up in a young nation attempting to forego its Ottoman past. Istanbul,
filled with Ottoman architecture and culture, served as the very antipathy of these
beliefs. Its glorious past was forgotten and the city was left for ruin. But having
shaped Pamuk’s life, Istanbul stays on as a melancholic presence throughout the
book.
Situated on two continents on the shores of the Bosphorus, Istanbul is still a very
scenic and breathtaking city. But the reminders of a glorious past are omnipresent,
adding to the huzun of the city. Pamuk looks back to the nineteenth century with
grateful affection when, though the Empire was in a decline, Istanbul had reached
its pinnacle in art and literature. Drawing upon the works of that era, peppering the
book with photographs and the portraits of the city, new and old, the author has
immersed the reader in the somber lore of the dying metropolis and has managed
to impress the prevailing sadness.
Although it is easy to get lost in Pamuk’s biography of the city, the book also serves
as his autobiography. Many stories from his childhood find a part in the novel and
so do many of his conflicts with family. All these add to the solemn theme of the
book.
We in India do not have an ancient city of the calibre of Istanbul to grieve. But the
melancholy of Istanbul can be well reflected by the decline of our ancient
civilization, once amongst the oldest in the world.
Ismail Haznedar, World President of JCI, is based out of Istanbul which will be
hosting the 2015 JCI European Conference from 3rd June 2015.

I WONDER WHY ?
-By GAYATHRI MANOJ
I looked around the world
To see people’s happiness
But I saw, children like me killed in Pakistan
I wondered why they were killed
Why were they shot to death?
Had they done any crime?
Or were they innocent?
I looked around the world again
For understanding why they were killed
But I found no mistake in them
Then why, were they killed?
I still keep on thinking, and I still wonder,
Why they were killed?
With the Nobel Peace Prize in her hand,
Malala, the pride of Pakistan, would also be thinking like me..
Why were they killed?????
