Following the September 11 tragedy, Usman spearheaded a cam-paign to remove general misconceptions about the Muslim faith andasked Muslims to embrace the real teachings and spirit of Islam. Healso helped organize various multi faith meetings in churches,mosques and temples to inculcate the spirit of brotherhood and senseof oneness. Being an active member of the Race Relations Commit-tee of the Town of Markham for years he became a driving forcebehind the project "Many Faces of Markham" that promotes mutualrespect and rappor t between various communities. In 2004 he re-ceived an award from the Race Relations Committee for his "dedica-tion and outstanding contribution" to the Many Faces of Markhamconcer t. Usman also serves as the Chairman of York Region's PeaceTree Initiatives that aims to promote the spirit of peace and together-ness among the Region's multi-cultural mosaic.As Councillor in the Town of Markham, Usman was able to have twocities of Pakistan and India named in his constituency.Usman took the initiative to celebrate Pakistan National Day in Canadawith the view of building bridges between the Pakistani communityand other communities by helping raise money from this event to

help suppor t a local Community hospital, the new YMCA Center inMarkham and other local charities.Usman's volunteer work on behalf of eye hospital has been extensive.Over the last few years he has helped raise over half a million dollarsfor Al-Shifa Eye Trust. One of the major achievements of this projectwas to star t a basic eye-screening scheme at school level in theentire region of Punjab, Pakistan.Usman's fundraising work, on behalf of a Cancer hospital in Pakistan,has also been very extensive. Over the last few years he has helpedraise hundreds of thousand dollars that has contributed to buildingShaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital in Lahore. This hospital now pro-vides free treatment for the poor.Usman believes in the elimination of Child labour and providing freeeducation to street kids. In 2005 he got involved in Zindagi Trust andhelped raise $ 150,000He was also instrumental in setting up of 5 primary schools in DistrictHazara under the auspices of AGAHI. Mr. Usman took the initiative ofsecuring over 110 computers from the Town of Markham to help star tcomputer labs for the girls under the auspices of Zindagi Trust.

Khalid Usman is one of the Founding directors of The Canadian Fed-eration of Intercultural friendship (CFIF). His vision of traditional Is-lamic humanitarianism combined with his strong lifelong commit-ment to social justice encouraged Khalid Usman and others to createan organization committed to bring together all major communities inthe York Region on one platform. A business leader, pioneer and phi-lanthropist, Khalid Usman for the past 35 years has contributed hisabilities to extensive voluntary involvement as an advisor, organizer,peace activist and fundraiser. He has won many awards for his advo-cacy work on behalf of the underprivileged and the needy.His voluntary activities also include organizing peace lectures andevents, which eventually help in developing peace and harmonyamong diverse communities. He has acted as a liaison between vari-ous South Asian communities to help motivate residents towardsliving in peace and harmony with each other notwithstanding theirage-old political differences.Usman played a very impor tant role in promoting peace betweenMuslims and Indian communities in the late seventies and early eight-ies when the "PAKI" problem became a major headache for all SouthAsians. He arranged seminars and meetings at the school and uni-versity levels to educate Pakistanis, and government officials as wellas other residents to help foster peace, harmony and brotherhood.In 1995 he supported the Coalition of Concerned Canadians in Markhamto restore better relations between the Chinese and rest of the com-munities following racial remarks by a municipal politician that sentshock waves among communities in Markham. The outcome of theeffor ts was effective containment of the greatly feared outbreak ofviolence in Markham.
