squad with 73 catches, 851 yards and eight touchdowns.A model of durability, Witten has played in 175 of a possible

176 games, missing just one with a broken jaw in 2003. For hiscareer, he has 879 catches (tops in team history) for 9,799 yards(second). His 52 career touchdown catches are good for third. Hehas the top-five single-season receiving yards totals by a tight endin club history, seven of the top-10 and is only the second Dallaspass catcher to reach 8,000 and 9,000 career receiving yards.

With a strong emphasis on the two-tight end set in Dallas, theCowboys picked up a big target capable of stretching the field andwinning one-on-one matchups when they drafted Gavin Escobarout of San Diego State in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.Escobar collected nine passes for 134 yards and two touchdownsas a rookie.

James Hanna came to Dallas in 2012 as the club’s sixthround draft pick. Hanna prepped at nearby Flower Mound HighSchool and played collegiately just up the interstate at Oklahoma, and has caught 20 passes for 159 yards in 32 games with 10starts.

The Dallas Cowboys have made their offensive line a priorityin the NFL Draft, using three of their past four first round draftchoices in the trenches. The trio of first round draft choices in ProBowl left tackle Tyron Smith (2011), center Travis Frederick(2013) and right guard Zack Martin (2014) has laid the foundationfor one of the most talented offensive lines in the NFL. Joining themon the front are Doug Free at right tackle and Ronald Leary at leftguard.

In reserve roles on the line are guard Mackenzy Bernadeau(bur-NAR-doe), a seventh year pro who has starting experienceand tackles Jermey Parnell, who came to Dallas as a lineman in2010, Darrion Weems, who was signed off of Denver’s practicesquad late in the 2012 season and Donald Hawkins, an undraftedrookie (Texas), who was acquired via waivers following final cuts.Parnell saw valuable playing time through the second half of 2012rotating at right tackle with Free. The most notable changes on defense for Dallas in 2014 arethe departures of long-time Cowboys DeMarcus Ware and JasonHatcher. The Cowboys instead focused on building strong depth onthe defensive line, bringing in veterans Henry Melton, TerrellMcClain, Amobi Okoye (Reserve/NFI list) and Jeremy Mincey toteam with holdovers George Selvie, Anthony Spencer, NickHayden and Tyrone Crawford under Defensive Coordinator RodMarinelli’s 4-3 scheme. Dallas also invested in several defensivelineman during the 2014 draft, picking defensive end DeMarcusLawrence (Boise State) in the second round, Ben Gardner(Stanford) in the seventh round, who will spend the 2014 seasonon the Reserve/Injured list (shoulder) and Ken Bishop (NorthernIllinois) in the seventh round.

Selvie is the returning sack leader from 2013 after recordingseven sacks in 16 starts at defensive end, both career-bests.

Spencer will attempt to get up to speed following microfracturesurgery on his knee in 2013, but will provide veteran leadership andlook for a return to form as the eighth-year pro has collected 32.5sacks during his career.

Melton and Okoye played for Marinelli while in Chicago, whereMelton made a Pro Bowl in 2012, and will look to bolster the defen-sive tackle positions along with Hayden, McClain and Bass.

Lawrence is a premier edge rusher who, will be counted on toattack opposing quarterbacks from the right defensive end positionwhen he returns from rehabbing a broken foot suffered in trainingcamp after compiling 20.0 sacks at Boise State.

Mincey split 2012 between the Jacksonville Jaguars andDenver Broncos as a rotational pass rusher, picking up two sacksin 10 games. Crawford is coming off an Achilles injury that cost himthe entire 2013 season, but will look to fulfill his promise as a phys-ical presence on the defensive line. Both players will push for astarting role on the defensive line to start the year.

Bishop, along with rookie free agent Davon Coleman, LavarEdwards, a 2013 fifth round draft choice by Tennessee who wasacquired via trade with the Titans on Aug. 30, and veteran JackCrawford, a former fifth round draft choice by Oakland who wasadded following final cuts, will add solid rotational players to thedefensive line mix.

The 2014 starting linebacker corps will feature a mix of youthand veteran players vying for a starting role after Sean Lee waslost for the season with injury early in offseason team work. Fourth-year player Bruce Carter, veteran Justin Durant and RolandoMcClain, Oakland’s 2010 first round pick, are slotted to start. Third-year player Kyle Wilber, second-year pro Cameron Lawrencerookie Anthony Hitchens and Korey Toomer, a former fifth rounddraft pick by Seattle who was acquired via waivers folllowing finalcuts, will round out the depth at the position.

On the outside, Carter looks to build on a strong 2013 cam-paign that saw him log a career-high 122 tackles in 15 games, thethird-highest total on the team. He also recorded the first two sacksof his career.

Durant, who has totaled 609 tackles in seven pro seasonswith Jacksonville (2007-10), Detroit (2011-12 and Dallas (2013),will use his versatility at linebacker to serve either on the outside orinside. The most veteran player of the bunch, Durant will be reliedupon to take a leadership role as well.

McClain, the former eighth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draftby Oakland, returns to the NFL in 2014 after retiring from the gamein 2013. In three seasons with the Raiders, he posted 274 tackles,6.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, 23 pass breakups, one interceptionand a forced fumble in 41 games with 38 starts. He will get the firstchance at taking over the middle spot previously occupied by Lee.

The Cowboys used their fourth round selection in the 2014Draft on Hitchens. The former Iowa linebacker led the Hawkeyesin tackles as a senior in 2013 with 112 stops. Overall, he finishedhis collegiate career with 270 tackles, three sacks, 19 tackles forloss, one interception, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

A former rush outside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme, Wilberwill continue his transition to outside linebacker in the 4-3 schemeand provide a boost with his speed and versatility.

Lawrence saw valuable playing time in 2013 as a rookie, see-ing time in 11 games to post five tackles on defense.

PERSONNEL BREAKDOWN -- DEFENSEAfter being drafted in the fifth round (154th overall) of the 2012

NFL Draft, Toomer spent his rookie season on the Seahawks prac-tice squad and the 2013 season on their Reserve/Non FootballInjury list with a knee injury. He looks to make his mark with theCowboys in 2014, providing depth at linebacker and on specialteams.

The Cowboys secondary returns three talented corners withBrandon Carr, Orlando Scandrick and Morris Claiborne lookingto show increased productivity from a down 2013 campaign, and apair of emerging players at the safety position in Barry Church andJ.J. Wilcox.

Carr was tabbed in 2012 free agency as the cornerback thatDallas wanted and needed. He came to Dallas after playing his firstfour pro seasons with Kansas City. After starting all 16 games forthe fifth consecutive season - first in Dallas - Carr also led theCowboys defense with three interceptions.

Carr finished 2013 as one-of-nine Cowboys with an intercep-tion, and his three were second. His 74 tackles were fourth on thedefense while his 17 pass breakups led the team.

Serving as the club’s nickelback is 2008 fifth round draft pickOrlando Scandrick (fifth round). Scandrick, now in his sixth season, has solidified his role in multi-receiver sets. He returned in 2013 afterlanding on IR 11 games into the 2012 season with a broken hand.

Scandrick was one-of-nine Cowboys with an interception andhis two were third on the team. He was fifth with 70 tackles. He willbegin the year on the team’s Reserve/Suspended list and miss thefirst four games.

Dallas traded up eight spots in the 2012 NFL Draft to land thetop defensive player available in Morris Claiborne. Claiborne leftLSU as a proven coverage man and standout kickoff returner. The2011 Jim Thorpe Award winner immediately stepped in as a starterand provided the Cowboys with another solid piece to a cornerbacktandem that proved to be physical and athletic.

Claiborne was one-of-nine Cowboys with an interception andplaced 14th on the tackle list with 31.

Dallas also returns Sterling Moore - acquired via NewEngland’s practice squad in 2012 - and 2014 undrafted rookie freeagent Tyler Patmon (Oklahoma State) as both look to vie for moreplaying time in the defensive backfield in 2014.

At safety, former 2010 undrafted free agent Church returned in2013 from an Achilles injury that saw him miss most of 2012 and setcareer-bests in almost every category, registering a team-leading147 tackles, five tackles for loss, six passes defensed, three forcedfumbles and his first-career interception.

Dallas drafted Wilcox in the third round of the 2013 draft togive Dallas a young, and athletic safety for the future. Wilcox hada strong camp and took over the starting role for the Week 3 gameagainst St. Louis.

Wilcox closed out his rookie campaign with 44 tackles throughthat placed him 10th on the defense.

Behind the starters will be second-year pro Jeff Heath, whofilled in admirably for Wilcox when he was out with injury in 2013while posting 60 tackles, an intercpetion and a fumble recovery for atouchdown while starying nine games. Veterans Jakar Hamilton -who will miss the first four games of the season due to being placedon the team’s Reserve/Suspended list - and C.J. Spillman, whowas acquired off waivers from San Francisco during final cuts - willall look to provide depth at the position.

Dan Bailey, a 2011 rookie free agent from Oklahoma State, solidified his place as Dallas’ placekicker following two impressiveseasons. Bailey finished his rookie season 32-of-37 (86.5%) onfield goals for the third-best percentage by a Cowboys rookie orfirst-year kicker while his 32 made were fourth among NFL rookiekickers all-time. Along the way, he drilled 26 consecutive field goaltries to tie Chris Boniol for the second-longest streak in club history. He did not miss a beat in his second season, finishing second inclub annals with a 93.5 (29-of-31) field goal percentage.

Bailey finished 2013 28-of-30 (93.3) on field goals and all 47PATs. Through his career, Bailey has rang true on 89-of-98 (90.8%)of his field goal tries and all 123 of his PATs.

The Dallas Cowboys maintained stability at punter last seasonas Chris Jones returned healthy. Jones was named the punter for2012 but suffered a knee injury that eventually landed him onReserve/Injured. In 2013 Jones punted 77 times for a gross of45.0, net of 39.1, long of 62 and 30 downed inside the 20.The strong-footed southpaw has 99 punts with a 44.8 gross aver-age, 39.3 net, 40 downed inside the 20 and a long of 62 yards onhis short resumé (22 games).

Deep snapper Louis-Philippe Ladouceur signed with Dallasprior to their Week Four contest at Oakland in 2005 and has beensolid and mistake-free on 639 punts, 275 field goals and 388 PATssince joining the team.

KICKING GAMEOn kickoff and punt returns, Dwayne Harris will look to build

on the success he had last season.Harris stole the show as a returner in 2013, leading the team

in punt and kick returns and finishing in the top-three in the NFL inboth categories, returning 20 punts for a 12.8-yard average andreturning 28 kicks for a 30.6-yard average. He also added a 90 yardpunt return-touchdown, the fourth-longest return in club history, andlooks to return kicks again in 2014.

Lance Dunbar, Cole Beasley and Joseph Randle will likelysee some time returning kicks and punts in 2014, while DezBryant, who has returned two punts for touchdowns and owns acareer 9.1 return average, provides depth behind Harris.

The Cowboys boast solid coverage units while returning amajority of their top tacklers including Jeff Heath (13), who led theclub in special teams tackles in 2013, and other top performersDwayne Harris (12) and Cameron Lawrence (12).

The special teams coverage unit should also see major contri-butions from vetran additions C.J. Spillman and Korey Toomer, and rookie newcomers in linebacker Anthony Hitchens and cor-nerback Tyler Patmon.
