A key distinction is that board members must operate as trustees, not as representatives. They hold the school and its mission in a trust for all current and future constituents. They do not serve to advocate for any particular aspect of school life, as important as those pieces might be. As board members, they also must rise above looking at how decisions might impact their own families exclusively. One help for that has been keeping a good mix of parents and non-parents on the board. The board is truly looking out for the good of the school as a whole, both short and long term. question more than just theoretical.

Scriptural references abound regarding the need for long memories in order to ensure faithfulness. Proverbs 22:28 instructs the Israelites not to “move the ancient boundary stone set up by your forefathers.” Deuteronomy 8 explicitly warns Israel that they will forget God after they prosper in the land. If a long institutional memory is crucial to Keeping First Things First, from whence will that come at Decatur Heritage? The answer is our board of trustees.

While headmasters, principals, teachers, parents, and students all come and go, the board remains. Yes, individual trustees are selected and eventually roll off, but the board as an entity exists as long as the school exists. What is it about this group in its structure and makeup that allows it to serve in this crucial capacity? Leonard Stob’s book Mission-Directed Governance: Leading the Christian School with Vision, Unity, and Accountability provides some useful categories of thought in that regard. The Decatur Heritage board of trustees is working through this book as part of their professional development this year.

! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! (Continued from front cover)

The board governs the school by policies, with direct oversight of only one employee, the headmaster. The policies they establish and use to evaluate the performance of the headmaster are grounded in and serve as practical extensions of the school’s mission, vision, and statement of faith. Those policy parameters set expectations for budgets, facilities, programs, and personnel and place the responsibility for day-to-day decisions and implementation squarely on the headmaster and his staff. Our accrediting body thoroughly examines this aspect of our operation each cycle, looking for either board overreach or abdication, and has consistently given us exemplary scores in this area.

Finally, our board is autonomous and self-perpetuating. In a fallen world, these attributes can certainly be abused. However, given the nature of the school business, these qualities are needed to allow the board to move above the politics and avoid the tyranny of the urgent. The board is bound to the statement of faith, regardless of the changes in culture. The board recruits new members with that same vision, men and women with a mature faith and a proven ability to look at the big picture and the school as a whole. Of course, the board must strive to keep the feedback paths open in order to avoid becoming removed from the daily atmosphere of the school. In fact, the results of the recently completed stakeholder surveys are already in the hands of the board and will provide a valuable tool for strategic planning. At the end of the day, the board of trustees has the responsibility for making the hard calls and making sure that Decatur Heritage Christian Academy is busyKeeping First Things First.

Students serving the community...Decatur Heritage Mission Team led by Mrs. Lisa Hamn, Magnify under the direction of Mrs. Glenda Briley, and DHCA Concert Band under the direction of Mr. Jeff Vaughn participated in the annual Can-A-Thon supported by the Volunteer Center of Morgan County. SENIOR

SCOPE

Any type of success is appreciated at Decatur Heritage. Athletics, though not as important as the spiritual and academic, is still celebrated when our teams do well. The most recent success of the football team has brought a great deal of positive attention to our school. As a football player myself, I was able to experience firsthand all of the specialness and excitement that comprised this season. I was able to witness the hard work my fellow teammates were putting in at practice. I was able to see willing volunteer coaches who came every day to encourage physical and mental toughness both on and off the field. I was, most importantly, able to listen everyday to football coaching that didn't just teach us how to read the ball but instilled Christian character as well. Continual reminders of who we played for, how we were expected to act (classroom and field), and a team prayer ending each day, I feel, has had a significant impact on my life. Yes, it was a winning season; however, I am confident in saying that no matter how many games we win or how far into the playoffs we progress, football at Decatur Heritage is a special experience.

ALUMNISPOTLIGHT

The Orr family: Zackary, Peyton, Price,

Ashley, and Paxton

My name is Ashley Nicole Orr. I attended Decatur Heritage Christian Academy from fourth grade until graduation in 2006. After graduation, I enrolled at Wallace State Community College and later worked at BBVA Compass Bank as a customer service representative. In 2011, I married the love of my life, Zackary Orr from Danville, Alabama, who is a Sergeant in the United States Army. I am blessed to be a homemaker and mother to three beautiful children, three-year old Price and six-month old twins, Peyton and Paxton. My husband's career took us to Vicenza, Italy to live for three years and we are now stationed in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

I absolutely loved my time at Decatur Heritage. While a student, I participated in many activities and events. I especially enjoyed learning from and playing for Coach Cochran as a member of the girls’ basketball team. I also played volleyball and ran cross country while at Decatur Heritage. I was selected to the homecoming court my senior year and crowned 2006 homecoming queen. The happiness and life experiences that I had while attending Decatur Heritage will forever be invaluable to me.

Above all other things, Decatur Heritage left me with the lasting impression of God. It was there I found a burning desire to know and love Him that continues to be a part of who I am today. He is the absolute source of my happiness and the strength to get me through whatever comes my way. Thank you, Decatur Heritage teachers and staff for investing in me.

Ashley Brown Orr

Students, teachers, parents, and administrators paid tribute in a community-wide celebration to veterans and their families for their service to our country.  Before entering the reception in the cafetorium, our honored guests were greeted with "The Walls of Honor," student artwork, and photos of our veterans.  A festive celebration was held in the gym which included “The Honor Table” by the DHCA Forensic Team, musical performances by students, Mr. Al Miller, and Mrs. Heather Kyle, and comments from Alabama State Senator Arthur Orr and Alabama House Representative Mrs. Terri Collins.

HERITAGE PREVIEWA First Hand Look at the Heritage Difference

Do you realize that YOU, as a part of the Decatur Heritage family, are the BEST source of advertising to promote Decatur Heritage? A wealth of validity and credibility is conveyed as you relate your experience and invite your family, friends, fellow church members, and business associates who are considering school options for the upcoming school year.

An early introduction to see “Decatur Heritage in action” will help them as they discern their school options. Visiting the school and scheduling a shadow day for their student allows parents to see what is unique about the school and prospective students can experience a Decatur Heritage school day. Once the parents have previewed the school and the student has shadowed for a day, the enrollment process may begin.

Please invite your family and friends who might consider or who are considering enrolling their children in Decatur Heritage to drop by anytime Monday through Friday 8:30am to 2pm to tour the campus, see Decatur Heritage in action, and talk with an administrator. No appointment is necessary.

We look forward to meeting many prospective parents and students as the 2016-2017 enrollment process begins!
