(Continued on Page 3)
As we enter a reaccreditation year, the premise of the process is “continual improvement.” When looking at new (or ancient) ideas for improvement, it is imperative to examine the context of those ideas to see if or how they can transfer into our current situation. What we know is that those ideas must be consistent on a theoretical level with our statement of faith and mission, vision, and values. On the practical side, those ideas must support our goal of preparing students forlives of impact. Even if both of those aspects are true, it still does not necessarily follow that all seemingly effective initiatives will flourish in our school in the current culture at this time in history.
Decatur Heritage Christian Academy is not the only institution subject to those concerns. Education in general and Christian schooling in particular are exposed to much reasoning of the “but this is working over there” or “this has always worked in the past” ilk. These pressures are easily illustrated. The educational system in Finland is rightly touted as producing exemplary results. However, when one realizes that the Finnish approach yields those results in the context of a highly homogenous population and a culture that deeply values education, the fact is clear that it is not just as easy as replicating some educational techniques. The current successes are closely tied to the current environment.
Another danger is to assume that approaches and techniques that have worked historically will continue to generate similar results as environments change. The vast networks of Christian Reformed schools in the rural Midwest and Catholic schools in urban centers were a testimony to strong subcultures that deeply valued Christian education. The drop in the number of those schools has been as much a reflection of the cultural and economic changes outside the school doors as to anything going on within the classroom walls.

Decatur Heritage announces that 3-‐GIS joins our team of Partners in Education. The local software technology company helps utilities and telecom providers with designing, building, and managing fiber, gas, and electric networks. Taking a modern approach to network modeling, 3-‐GIS has grown to a global powerhouse delivering its technology world-‐wide enabling their customers to achieve a faster marketing time and more efficient network managing.
PARTNER IN EDUCATIONis a cooperative program developed by local public and
private schools and the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce. This program allows our students and
teachers to see how classroom learning can be applied in the business world, provide our partners an opportunity to learn more about Decatur Heritage, and how the two can partner in ways that will be advantageous to both
school and businesses.
President/CEO Tom Counts says, “3-‐GIS is pleased to associate itself with a school that is preparing students to be extraordinary, God-‐centered, and servant-‐minded. These are traits that my company looks for when hiring. We are happy to align with Decatur Heritage as they prepare students for today’s real-‐life challenges and strength of character to build a better tomorrow.”

(Continued from the front cover)
In that we are located in the American South, the Bible Belt, if you will, it would be easy to be lulled into a false sense of complacency. However, the past few years, culminating in some landmark decisions this summer, should serve to awaken us to the new lay of the cultural land. Painfully, we need to recognize that these changes are not the driving force of cultural demise but merely the reflection of existing cultural malaise.
What are the implications for us at Decatur Heritage? What pressures will those permeating factors place on our school? The most blatantly obvious truth to note is that we should no longer assume a shared understanding or valuation of what we do, either from the culture at large or from our constituency as a whole. Volumes have been written on the subjects, but for sake of simplicity, I am placing our school in a post-Christian, consumerist culture. This position is not all bad in that it forces the issue of our existence in several positive ways.
In our opening meeting with the faculty this year, I shared how that is truly great news. In the current environment, our message, if faithful, will stand out in a way unheard of in our lifetimes. Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, says in his latest book, Onward: Engaging the Culture without Losing the Gospel, that the “increasing marginalization of Christianity offers an opportunity for the church to reclaim a gospel vision that has been too often obscured, even within sectors of the church we think of as ‘conservative.'” We have, as he puts it “…the opportunity to bear witness in a culture that often does not even pretend to share our ‘values.’ That is not a tragedy since we were never given a mission to promote ‘values’ in the first place, but to speak instead of sin and of righteousness and judgment, of Christ and his kingdom.”
What a powerful reminder that, as we are busy Keeping First Things First, we can prepare our students for lives of impact in a culture that so desperately needs it. In the next few issues, I will begin to describe not only how we can work to ensure that those first things are prominent in our classrooms but also how we can guard against institutional drift in times like these. Attainment of these goals is a huge responsibility, and we covet your prayers!
Decatur Heritage Christian Academy is a 501-C-3 non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Memorials, honorariums, and gifts may be mailed to DHCA, P. O. Box 5659, Decatur, AL 35601-0659.

SCOPE
The beginning of a new school year is the perfect opportunity to commit to starting strong and carrying that vigor out to the end of the school year. Yes, I am reemphasizing what teachers say every year because I believe what they say. This notion originates not from our teachers but from God. Ephesians 6:7 tells us to do everything to the best of our ability. God opens up long corridors full of endless doors of opportunities if we obey His word. However, if we don't even step foot inside that corridor by at least doing our schoolwork to the best of our ability, how could we then expect God to bless us with opportunities to excel in other areas?
written by Jonathan CiminoPresident, Class of 2016
My name is Brittany Denson Winfree and I am a member of the class of 2007. I graduated from Union University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree and work in Union’s Student Life department. While at Union, I met a wonderful man who is now my husband, and we are the proud parents of Isaac Lee. My time at Decatur Heritage was filled with many sweet memories and great friends. Some of my fondest memories while a student there are baking cookies on the hood of my Jeep when I was supposed to be in the restroom (yes, Mrs. Holland did give me detention for this), constant softball and basketball practices, bus rides to our basketball games in the oh-so-unreliable ‘Silver Bullet’ (I cannot count how many times this bus broke down), dressing up as Canterbury Tales characters in Mrs. Holland’s class, the cafeteria serving Papa John’s pizza every Thursday, driving Coach Oliver crazy during softball practice with my sweet dance moves and singing, and many more that would take too long to list.
I look back on these times and laugh at the silliness that took place, thank God for the sweet friends I made, and reminisce about the wonderful memories of playing sports for DHCA. The most memorable aspects of my time at Decatur Heritage, however, were the intentional teachers, the community that was carefully built and cultivated, and the emphasis on trusting in the gospel and living out genuine faith each day. At DHCA, academic success is not the ultimate goal of the teachers and administrators. Yes, you are being equipped with tools to aid in academic success; however, the hope of these great educators is to teach the gospel and hold up Christian values to each student placed under their care. It is incredible to have been a part of a school whose teachers and administrators see the preaching of the gospel and trusting in Christ as something to be treasured above all worldly things.
Students, realize and appreciate that you are blessed. Be aware of God’s rich blessings in allowing you to be a part of a school that promotes stringent academic goals, but more importantly, a school that holds up the gospel of Christ. You have access to teachers who care for your heart, not merely what you can accomplish academically. Thank the Lord for his kindness and take advantage of your time at DHCA. My life has been greatly impacted by this great school, and I am thankful for the opportunity I had to be a Decatur Heritage Eagle!

As we started to answer this question, we both recalled our struggle with the initial decision to enroll our daughter, Caroline, in first grade at Decatur Heritage. It was 2010 and we, like many families, had just come through the adversity of the Great Recession. There were so many questions, yet few answers. Like many decisions our family has faced, we trusted God to shine His light a few steps ahead of our yet unseen path. God quickly opened our eyes and revealed to us that by having Caroline enrolled here, we were making an investment in the future of our family – one that we hope will pay dividends beyond this generation. God has honored that initial decision in so many ways, and this fall, our son, Payne, will join his sisters, Caroline (sixth grade) and Mary Lane (third grade) at DHCA.
We teach our children God’s Word in our home. We hope to reflect the model in Deuteronomy 6:7 where God’s people are instructed to diligently teach their children its truth when they sit in their homes, when they walk (or drive) along the way, when they lie down at night and when they rise in the morning. In other words, it is God’s desire that His Word be on our hearts all the time. In the lives of our children, we are grateful that this concept is reinforced by not only the church they attend, but also by their school. Because of the time spent there, a child’s school has tremendous influence on their spiritual development – both good and bad. We are thankful for the godly impression of DHCA teachers, administrators, parents and peers who likewise invest in the spiritual development of our children. We truly believe that Decatur Heritage is integral in reinforcing the set of values and skills we hope to equip our children with – ones they will use in their daily lives to glorify God now and in the future.
As we drove past the school this summer, Payne yelled enthusiastically, “That’s my new school!” We also recently asked our daughters about their experience at Decatur Heritage. Mary Lane said that it was a fun school where she could “talk about Jesus.” Caroline replied, “It’s my school and I am thankful that I don’t have to wait ‘til Sunday to worship God.” Amen!
