January Birthday
& Anniversary
Party Lunch will be served at 11:45 AM
Entertainment begins at 12:30 PM
It’s time once again to celebrate those who have birthdays and wedding anniversaries in the month of January. Often referred to as the "happiest music on earth", Bahama Bob performs all your favorite styles of Caribbean/Island music on a traditional 'hand made' steel drum from Trinidad. Although he's a 'solo' performer, Bahama Bob is accompanied by state of the art backing tracks providing you with the rich sound of a complete 6-7 piece band. Bob Milan brings over 30 years of professional live performance to the table. Bob has performed throughout the U.S. as well as in 13 different countries throughout his career. Please reserve your lunch by 12 noon on Thursday, January 14.

Do you remember playing the “telephone”
game as a child? Someone makes a statement
and it is whispered from one person to the
next. By the time the statement reaches the
end of the line, the story has changed
dramatically, and the facts have gotten so
jumbled that they no longer bear any
resemblance to the original statement. So it
happens sometimes with situations at the
Senior Center. We can’t always comment or
explain, and that can be frustrating, as it would
help people to better understand the situation.
The important thing to remember is that all of
us on staff here are devoted to the well-being
of our participants, and strive to ensure that
the Senior Center is always a welcoming place
where warmth, positivity, respect, and kindness
will overcome any negativity or divisiveness.
Jennifer, Becky, Rita, Kim, Pat, Laurie, and I
appreciate your ongoing encouragement,
understanding, and support. Thank you and
best wishes for a very Happy New Year!
~Mary

From the
Director’s Desk Thank you to everyone who filled out our
TRIAD survey last month. TRIAD is a
partnership between the Senior Center, law
enforcement and local businesses to help
promote a safer community for seniors. The
group does presentations on things like
scams or traffic issues and the annual car
check inspection. This survey will help us
better understand your concerns so we can
address them in 2016. The Senior Center
offers a TRIAD presentation monthly, so
make sure you check them out. We are still
looking for volunteers to be on our TRIAD
committee. All this requires is one hour a
month. Let me know if you’re interested.
I want to wish you all a Happy New Year! It’s
hard to believe another new year has arrived.
I’m looking forward to new milestones in
2016. I will have one son driving and my
youngest will enter high school. It’s crazy
how time flies, isn’t it? I’m wishing each of
you a happy & healthy 2016!
“Be at war with your vices, at peace with
your neighbors and let every new year find
you a better man” - Benjamin Franklin

THE CHRONICLE ~ JANUARY 2016 | 3
Health Bits from Barbara
Happy New Year!
Now that we’re done with all the extra
sweets for a time (Halloween, Thanksgiving,
and Christmas) we need to concentrate on
how important keeping a healthy mouth is
and its relationship to total body health.
Make this number one on your priority list!
Unhealthy balance of bacteria in the mouth
can cause an inflammatory response and
cause an oral infection. This leads to local
inflammation and tissue damage. The
evidence of this is redness, swelling, bleeding,
receding gums, noticeable spaces between
the teeth and gums, loss of bone support,
and tooth loss. Untreated gum disease can
lead to increased risk of stroke, respiratory
infections, heart disease, and uncontrolled
diabetes.
All of our body systems influence one
another to our benefit or demise. Adult
periodontitis may cause increase risk of
heart and cardiovascular disease and clotting
concerns. The hazardous bacteria in the
mouth can be inhaled into the lungs causing
infections. Finally, smokers with diabetes
increase their risk of tooth loss by twenty
times and periodontal disease is several
times as likely to develop in those with type
II diabetes as in non-diabetics. Diabetics have
difficulty controlling blood sugar levels if they
have an unhealthy balance of bacteria in the
mouth.
See your dentist twice a year. Get your
teeth cleaned. Your dentist will examine your
mouth and under your tongue to make
certain all is healthy. Floss before brushing
and brush at least twice daily. If you notice
any changes from your normal, make an
appointment to see your dentist right away.
It can make a difference in your total body
health.
~Nurse Barbara

11:00 AM Did you wake up this morning feeling like
your feet or low back were a little stiff? If
this sounds familiar, then this MELT Class is
for you. In this 8 week session, all levels class
you will learn the primary cause of pain and
will be taught simple, self care techniques you
can do at home to remain active, healthy and
pain free for life. Using specialized soft body
rollers and small MELT Hand and Foot
Treatment Balls to simulate the results of
manual therapy, you will learn how to reduce
inflammation, ease chronic neck and low
back strain, and more.
The MELT Method was developed for the
general public as a self-care tool to prevent
and relieve chronic pain. It’s an essential
addition to any wellness or fitness routine.
For more about MELT, go to
www.meltmethod.com.
Keeping Fit Mondays at 8:45 AM
Thursdays at 8:45 AM This exercise program is a mixture of
aerobic exercises, weight training,
mobility and balance improvement. A new
Monday session begins January 11 and a new
Thursday session begins January 14.
Pilates Workshop: Neck
Tuesday, January 5 at 12:15 PM Join Lindsay Pelletier from Hometown Pilates.
This free neck workshop is designed to
inform you on how to maintain proper head
alignment in your daily life. Healthy alignment
is key to being pain free! When a person has
improper alignment, joints and discs will
wear out faster than they should. Just like
aligning the tires on your car to prevent
immature wearing down of the tires- you
want to do the same with your body! If you
currently have neck pain, this workshop will
teach you ways of moving that will help. We
will also work on stretching other areas of
the body that can impede the ability to have
proper alignment in the neck. Did you know
that your feet can affect your neck? Come
and learn more! Sign up at the Senior Center
front desk.
Functional Fitness Tuesdays at 9:00 AM
This exercise program is a low-impact
physical activity program to challenge your
range of fitness levels. There will be FREE
classes on January 19 and 26. The next paid
session will begin on Tuesday, February 2.
