Let us respond to the voice of God calling us to remember those whose needs are great. For those in authority in our Church as they seek to serve according to the words of Je-sus and in so doing set an example for all to follow, let us pray to the Lord. For those in authority in every nation and for those who lead the multinational corpora-

tions to understand the great impact that their decisions have on those who are the poorest and least able to defend and care for themselves and their families, let us pray to the Lord. For all those involved in our Catholic schools: for teachers, students, administrators, staff, and par-ents, let us pray to the Lord. For immigrants, strangers, and visitors to our country to experi-ence the generosity of spirit of which our nation boasts, let us pray to the Lord. For the prophets among us, who call our attention to the wrongs that we would rather not acknowledge, and who inspire us to make things right, let us pray to the Lord. For all those who are sick, for all who suffer from COVID-19, and for all who have died, let us pray to the Lord. For all the prayers that we hold in the silence of our hearts; for all our intentions spoken and unspoken, let us pray to the Lord.

FEAST OF FAITH I Confess One form of the penitential rite at the be-ginning of Mass is the traditional Confiteor, or “I confess,” a prayer that was formerly prayed by the priest alone at the foot of the altar, but which is now prayed by the entire assembly. The Con-fiteor is at once personal—“I confess”—and communal, prayed aloud, together. We recog-nize that sin does not just separate us from God; sin comes between us and others, isolating us. We acknowledge that sin has many dimensions, individual and communal: sins of thought, sins of speech, sins of action, sins of omission. Sin is not something that happens to us; sin is some-thing we do. In the Confiteor, we take responsi-

bility for our own actions. The repeated insistence on our “fault,” with the ritual gesture of striking the breast, an ancient sign of penitence, is not meant to lower our self-esteem. Rather, it acknowledg-es our human instinct to transfer the blame whenever we can (“The devil made me do it!”). This prayer stops us short. We take responsibility for our-selves, our actions, our failure to act. Then we cry out to God in those ancient words, Kyrie, eleison—Lord, have mer-cy. For the sinner who repents, there is mercy. 31 Tháng Giêng — Kỳ Quan Của Thế Kỷ 19

Ngày 31 tháng 1, cách đây đúng một thế kỷ, thế giới mất đi một người mà ông Rattazzi, thủ tướng nước Ita-

lia, thời bấy giờ nổi tiếng là người chống báng Giáo Hội, đã phải thốt lên: "Ngài là kỳ quan vĩ đại nhất của thế

kỷ thứ 19. Cả nước Pháp đã suy tôn Ngài như một vị Thánh Vinh sơn đệ Phaolô của thế kỷ". Con người đó

chính là Thánh Don Bosco.

Thánh nhân chào đời năm 1815 tại miền Piemonte, thuộc mạn bắc nước Italia. Mẹ Ngài là bà Magarita

mong ước cho Ngài được làm linh mục. Nhưng bà đã dặn dò con mình: "Mẹ đã sinh ra trong nghèo khó, mẹ đã

sống trong nghèo khó, mẹ cũng muốn chết trong nghèo khó. Nếu con muốn làm linh mục để giàu có, mẹ sẽ

không bao giờ bén mảng đến với con".

Don Bosco đã thực hiện lời khuyên của mẹ. Không những Ngài đã sống nghèo, nhưng chỉ sống với người

nghèo, nhất là trẻ em nghèo. Ngài đã đi khắp hang cùng ngõ hẻm, thu nhặt những trẻ em lang thang đầu đường

xó chợ.

Nếu mãi đến năm 1848, Karl Marx mới đưa ra tuyên ngôn kêu gọi giới công nhân đứng lên, đoàn kết đấu

tranh cho quyền lợi của họ, thì trước đó, Don Bosco cũng đã tranh đấu cho giới công nhân rồi.

Thời của Thánh nhân, kỹ nghệ mới phát triển, nhiều vấn đề xã hội được đặt ra. Thánh nhân chủ trương

không chỉ mang lại cho giới trẻ một nền giáo dục về mặt tinh thần hay tu đức, mà còn giúp cho giới trẻ một

nghề nghiệp trong tay. Thánh Don Bosco đã được xem như là cha đẻ của những trường huấn nghệ ngày nay.

Phương pháp sư phạm được Thánh nhân đề ra nhắm đến sự đề phòng hơn là trừng phạt. Thay vì chữa trị

những sai trái, tốt hơn là đề phòng để những sai trái không xảy ra. Trong tất cả mọi sự, tình thương và sự dịu

dàng là cơ sở cho tất cả mọi cư xử của Thánh Don Bosco.

Hiền lành và vui vẻ là hai nhân đức trội vượt trong sự thánh thiện của Thánh Don Bosco. Với sự hiền lành

đầy cảm thông, Thánh nhân nhìn mọi người bằng chính cái nhìn của Chúa Giêsu. Cái nhìn đó muốn nói với tội

nhân hay bất cứ một tâm hồn xấu xa nào rằng: "Bạn có một giá trị cao cả. Thiên Chúa vẫn tiếp tục yêu thương

bạn. Bạn đừng ngã lòng".

Ði đôi với sự hiền lành chính là vui vẻ. Châm ngôn của Thánh Don Bosco chính là: Phụng sự Chúa trong

vui tươi. Sự vui vẻ của Thánh Don Bosco là liều thuốc hữu hiệu nhất cho thời đại đầy ohiền muộn và chán nản

của chúng ta. Niềm vui của Thánh nhân xuất phát từ một xác tín cơ bản trong Kitô giáo của chúng ta: Thiên

Chúa là Tình Yêu. Do đó những người được Thiên Chúa yêu thương không thể nào buồn thảm được.

Sứ điệp của Thánh Don Bosco vẫn luôn hợp thời, nhất là trong hoàn cảnh hiện tại của chúng ta. Giữa một xã

hội mà tương quan con người được xây dựng trên thù hận, nghi kỵ, bon chen, giành giật, lừa đảo. Thánh Don

Bosco nói với chúng ta rằng: Con người vẫn còn đáng thương yêu, vẫn còn đáng tôn trọng và tin tưởng.

Giữa một xã hội mà sự buồn thảm đang ngự trị, Thánh nhân muốn đem lại cho chúng ta nụ cười của lạc

quan. Nụ cười lạc quan đó chỉ có thể nở rộ khi con người còn tin tưởng ở Tình Yêu của Thiên Chúa. Giữa

những mất mát từng ngày, Thánh Don Bosco mời gọi chúng ta hãy tìm kiếm lại mọi sự trong Tình thương của
