  • The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. This is what Jesus read in front of everyone, and after reading he sat down sayingthis passage is fulfilled today!

This was of course, outrageous, not just because Jesus was adjudicating a scripture passage to himself, but mainly because it was a passage that only referred to the messiah.

Through this passage, Jesus is taking the whole world upon himself. No one knows what the messiah has come to accomplish in reality or how he will fulfill this passage.

Jesus knew that every promise, every line of this passage was only fulfilled through the cross, but why through the cross? Why did it have to be through suffering?

I just imagine that if there were any believers around Christ at this moment, they would have been excited to hear that Jesus was the one. But even for the most believers, to see Jesus on the cross was such a disappointment. Paul himself called it a word of foolishness. And it is. How can someone hanging on a cross be the fulfilment of the most important promise in the scriptures?

There has to be some meaning in suffering for it to be the way, or at least, the apparent way of salvation. But what is it? Suffering is never a new topic for Christianity. We accepted the cross a long time ago, and we learned that we have to accept suffering and make it holy. But there is nothing that can become unholy as suffering. We can easily turn away from God when we suffer, and there is no reasoning that can make us endure. And we should not. For in fact, suffering has no power or value of its own.

Thomas Merton said, to believe in suffering is pride, but to suffer, believing in God is humility. We fall into sin when, as our first fathers did, when we turn away from God. The cross of Christ, and all its suffering, is liberating when we turn toward God despite the pain.

Y no deberamos soportarlo.

Knights of Columbus Council Needs You

Have you thought about being more involved in your parish? Do you join Emmaus or other parish groups and participate frequently but would like to do more for others? Then we invite you to consider joining Our Lady of the Rosary Council. The Knights are a fraternal organization that promotes and works to enhance catholic values. The Knights were originally chartered by Fr. McGivney to help immigrant men in the Boston area provide life insurance for their families. Today, Knights insurance plans are well funded and still provide coverage and annuities for Knights and their families. But you must be a member to participate in the insurance plans.

The Knights at St. Joseph provide support to the parish to help maintain the facilities and scholarships to the parish school. They also support the seminarians at the University of St. Mary on the Lake in Mundelein, help fund Illinois Special Olympics and organizations that help people with intellectual disabilities in our local communities. They also contribute to Lake County Right to Life and Aid to Women as prolife activities. They help veterans at the Lovell Medical Center attend mass, provide turkeys and hams for the food baskets provided by the PRAISE and school groups during the holidays, sponsor youth activities during the school year, like free throw competitions and a spelling bee, and sponsor the blood drives.

We need you to help us in this important work as the Council cannot do this without an adequate number of active members. If you are interested to learn more, contact Efrain Camacho or Troy LeBlanc, our membership chairmen, or Jim Raihle, our Grand Knight.

Catholic Schools Week is a Huge Celebration

The students are starting to ask how

St. Joseph School will celebrate Catholic Schools Week this year. The teachers gather weeks in advance with the principal to design a memorable week for all to enjoy.

Voices of all ages can already be heard talking about the dance and the chance to Duct Tape the principal to the wall. Parents and teachers have asked, Are you really going to do that? My response is Of course, doesnt it sound fun? (It was my idea.)

St. Joseph School families will be hosting two Masses this year. Traditionally, the students have taken part in the 9:30 a.m. Mass on the opening Sunday. This year we will also host the 11 a.m. Spanish Mass. Students will carry the gifts, serve on the altar, lector, and help usher.
