DETROIT — Two super hero-themed vehicles at the auto show in Detroit are there for more than just their flashy looks.

The Batman-decorated Kia Optima and the Green Lantern-wrapped Kia Soul are at the South Korean automaker’s exhibit to pro-mote an effort to fight hunger in Africa. Features include Batman

symbols inside and outside on the Optima, and the Green Lantern’s symbol on the Soul’s wheels.

The vehicles were created as part of a partnership involving DC Entertainment. The “We Can Be Heroes” effort is promoted in part by the use of Justice League charac-ters. Details are posted on the cam-paign’s website.

The North American International Auto Show runs to Jan. 27.

tion of the Chevrolet Camaro at the Detroit auto show offers a little something for car lovers, kids and kids at heart.

General Motors Co. last year announced it would sell the vehicle with Hot Wheels logos and other toy-inspired touches such as red-lined wheels.

At the North American

International Auto Show, the car sits on an oversized track that appears to swoop down from the ceiling.

GM has said that the Hot Wheels edition would be offered as a coupe and convertible in a “Kinetic Blue” paint colour.

At the car’s display in Detroit, visitors can take a digital photo with a Camaro in the background and share it online. There’s also a track to jump toy Hot Wheels.

DETROIT — After scoring a hit with its CR-V compact SUV, Honda on January 14 offered a glimpse at what the automaker’s new, even smaller SUV might look like when it hits streets.

The `Ùrban SUV Concept’’ made its debut during press previews at the North A m e r i c a n International Auto Show in Detroit. Honda Motor Co. plans to launch a small SUV based on that concept vehicle in Japan by the end of the year and in the U.S. in 2014.

The concept SUV is 9 inches (22.86 centime-tres) shorter than the CR-V, and hidden rear door handles give it a smooth, coupe-like presence. When it goes on sale in the U.S. it’s expected to be priced below the existing CR-V, which starts around $22,700 for a 2013 model.

``We believe there is a good market poten-tial for this vehicle,’’ Tetsuo Iwamura, presi-dent and chief operat-ing officer of Honda’s North American Regional Operations, said in an interview with reporters at the show.

The new SUV is expected to fill a place in Honda’s lineup between the subcom-pact Fit and the CR-V, and Iwamura said he anticipates it will draw new buyers — not poach sales from Honda’s existing vehi-cles. He said the con-cept for the new SUV is ``completely differ-ent’’ than its existing offerings.

Honda’s new SUV is part of a segment of smaller vehicles that are becoming more readily available in the U.S. market with high-er-end features such as heated seats and navi-gation, noted IHS Automotive analyst Rebecca Lindland. Other upcoming small SUVs, such as the Toyota RAV4, fit the bill as well.

`Ìn every other part

of the world, those are considered midsize if not larger, and we have them as compact SUVs. As they move up, there’s room under-neath,’’ she said. ``We’re getting room at the bottom.’’

Last year, Honda’s U.S. vehicle sales rose 24 per cent, led by strong sales of its Civic and Accord sedans as well as the Odyssey minivan. But Honda sees an opportunity to increase sales of its smaller vehicles as well. Last year, for example, CR-V sales rose 29 per cent to more than 281,000.

Honda hasn’t released a forecast for 2013 global sales, but it’s shooting for its big-gest sales year ever in

the U.S., Iwamura said. The company sold 1.55 million vehicles in the U.S. in 2007, and `òur challenge for this year,’’ he said, is to top that.

Honda is opening a plant near Celaya, Guanajuato, north of Mexico City. It plans to build the new SUV there as well as the Fit. With the addition of the plant, Honda said about 95 per cent of its production for North America will be in North America, up from its current level of about 90 per cent.

``That is a symbol of the kind of localization that we’ve done in North America,’’ Honda President and CEO Takanobu Ito said in an interview with reporters at the show.

DETROIT — Toyota has once again dethroned General Motors as the world’s top-selling automaker.

The Japanese company sold 9.7 mil-lion cars and trucks worldwide in 2012, although it’s still counting. GM sold 9.29 million.

Both companies saw higher sales, but Toyota’s growth was far larger as it rolled out new versions of popular models like the Camry.

GM executives promised sales growth this year, especially in the U.S.

Both companies say publicly that they don’t care about who wins, but concede that the crown is an impor-tant morale booster for employees.

GM was the top-selling carmaker for more than seven decades before losing the title to Toyota in 2008.

But GM retook the sales crown in 2011 when Toyota’s factories were

slowed by an earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The disaster left Toyota dealers with few cars to sell. The company has since recovered.

Toyota’s comeback from the earth-quake, and flooding in Thailand, is only part of the story, says Jeff Schuster, senior vice-president of forecasting for LMC Automotive, a Detroit-area industry forecasting firm.

The company also has freshened up its stale midsize sedan, the Camry, the top-selling car in the United States.

GM’s global sales rose 2.9 per cent last year, it announced Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Toyota sales rose 22 per cent.

Schuster expects Toyota to keep the lead over GM this year as it launches a new Corolla.

``I think that’s going to be enough to

keep them in their position,’’ he says.Toyota builds 70 per cent of the cars

it sells in the U.S. in North America, including the Corolla.

GM is also contending with a stron-ger Volkswagen.

It narrowly edged out the fast-grow-ing German company for second place in 2012. VW sold a record 9.1 million vehicles.

Volkswagen, with big sellers like the Passat midsize sedan and Jetta compact, closed in on GM with an 11 per cent sales increase across the globe.

The United States, where VW Group sales rose 34 per cent, led the way.

Schuster expects GM to hold off Volkswagen in 2013.

That’s because VW has more of a presence in Europe, where sales are falling as the region struggles with high unemployment and weak econo-mies.
