THE YEAR OF MERCY

The Epiphany of the Lord

In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Epiphany celebrates God’s mercy shining on the magi from a guiding star. Their kingdoms were far from Jerusalem, their religions far from God’s covenant with Israel. At first the star led the magi to Jerusalem, where they could “recalculate” their quest with the help of God’s own “GPS,” the Jewish scriptures. How challenging and humbling for the magi to discover that they would find the world’s Messiah not in a palace but with a poor couple in an insignificant village. That’s where God’s mercy, shining in the star, led the magi to worship Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Today the magi invite us to “recalculate” our life’s journey during this Jubilee Year – to follow the star of God’s mercy along the way of humble love, to discover a renewed personal relationship with Jesus ourselves and so become “guiding stars” leading other seekers to find Jesus, too.

MUSIC NOTES

Many thanks to all who made “A Festival of Carols” possible!

Whether you sang, rang, strummed, bowed, blew, or beat an instrument, filed and distributed music, created seating charts, drove your kids to and from rehearsal, coordinated a Christmas rehearsal brunch, brought Christmas rehearsal brunch, and two dozen home-baked cookies and more, we are deeply appreciative of the many hours you dedicate to Holy Family Music Ministry. All those hours practicing at church and at home in order to master your music helped us create such beautiful music to lead all into Christmas with the story of salvation through music and readings. Readers, your gifts in proclaiming the Word of God spread the Good News to all gathered. Our Christmas Cookie Reception elves and choir spouses, Kathleen Carney and Mary Kelly, we salute you for hosting a charming reception while wondering if anyone would actually show up with home-baked cookies to share or if you’d have 4 gallons of cider and hot chocolate left over. It is a joy to serve our parishioners and the Lord with you all. Holy Family is blessed with parishioners generous with their time, musical and administrative talents as well! How much fun we have! God bless you and your generous spirits!

“Tools for Evangelizing Family and Friends”Did you miss the session on “Tools for Evangelizing

Family and Friends?” Do you have family members or friends who are no longer active in their Catholic faith? You can start working on this right now with a simple, daily prayer. “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, Pray for ______.” To really affect a change of heart in someone we need to offer them up in prayer.

Also, practice patience! St. Monica prayed for her son, St. Augustine, for over 10 YEARS before his conversion. Contact NET at [email protected] to learn about more ways to start the process of bringing family and friends back home to the Catholic faith.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP 101: It is a time to weep, to cry, even to smile and to laugh. It is a time to remember a loved one who has died and, we believe in faith, has been welcomed home by our loving Father. It is a time to tell the many stories of our loved one and how they may have affected our lives. It is a time to know that your grief is healthy, and needs to be expressed. With this idea in mind, we will begin our Grief Support Group in January, where I trust you will find a safe place to honor the memories of your loved one. The first session, Thursday, January 14, we will meet at Holy Family. The next session on Thursday, January 28, will be at the home of Karen Dixon. We will meet at Holy Family at 6:30 p.m. and proceed to Karen’s house for a “get acquainted with the program’s format” and outline the rest of the sessions. This will be followed by a potluck meal provided by Karen. You just need to bring yourself. The next two dates will be as follows: Thursday, February 11, and Thursday, February 25, at 7:00 p.m., at Holy Family. The sessions will end at 8:00 p.m. There are ten sessions and the dates of the rest of the meetings will be determined by the group. If you would like to attend, and so we have an accurate account, please call Chaplain Jim Fedor at 481-5702. Please call if you have any questions.

NATIONAL VOCATIONS AWARENESS: “Opening their treasure chests, they offered Him gifts.” Are you beginning to see your life as a gift to be given to the Lord as a priest, deacon, religious sister or brother? Call Father Michael Boehling at 804-359-5661 or e-mail [email protected].

“BELONGING:”At this time, with so much tension and unrest in our world,

we think it is important that we go deep in our spiritual lives and see how we can be people of peace, justice, and love in our world. “Belonging” wakes us up to our Christian call to be people of peace and justice. In prayer, conversation, and action, “Belonging” helps us to internalize and live out these Gospel values.

“Belonging” is a small group process developed by the JustFaith Ministries… It is an invitation to transform and deepen our spiritual lives by expanding our hearts and minds… awakening us to our connectedness and unity with all creation. It is an invitation…to live deeply and fully by making room for wonder, wounds and mystery… to listen carefully to Scripture and each other… to draw the world down into ourselves and hold it in prayer. There is a prayerful, reflective tone to each session… holy listening … sharing of a book and several articles… prayers, exercises, and questions that sometimes focus on disturbing social realities.

“Belonging” is a shared spiritual, transformative journey… a structured opportunity to practice living deeply and loving broadly.

Two hour sessions, plus one immersion experience (going to the margins of society) beginning Thursday, January 21, 9:30-11:30 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church. For further information, please contact Renee McCarthy at 486-3375 or [email protected].

PRAY FOR THE SICK AND PRAYER REQUESTS: If you have added someone’s name to our “Pray for the Sick” and/or “Prayer Requests,” please let us know if that person needs to be taken off the list because they have recovered or because they have died.

THE CHOSEN MINISTRY is a ministry dedicated to ministering to persons (middle school to adults of any age) who experience disabilities. We have Holy Family The Chosen Ministry gatherings the first three Mondays of the month from 6:30-8:00 p.m. during the school year. The next meeting is 6:30 p.m. on Monday, January 4. For more information, contact Susie Stefonowich at 342-8540 or [email protected].

“CARE FOR OUR EARTH” The environmental movement and the green economy are current sources of change that are impacting our world. According to Green America, a national environmental organization, some examples we can rejoice in would be: the growth of the solar industry, which in 2000 provided only 0.001 of the total energy mix and today is reaching 1 million solar rooftops (the CEO of Shell has conceded that “solar will be the backbone of our energy system”); more people are demanding that their food be healthy, safe, organic, and non-GMO, resulting in big food companies now offering non-GMO and organic versions of their popular products; and restorative, organic farming (studies show) vacuums carbon out of the atmosphere as it rebuilds soil (if enough agricultural land would convert to organic, enough carbon could be sequestered to reverse climate change). So, the birth and growth of the environmental movement has and is making a change in our Earth and its inhabitants, which calls for celebration!
