Gratude for Making Possible Peru Visit

This coming Tuesday I return to St. Mary of the Valley. I am grateful to Fr. Valencia, Deacon Gene, Sister Barbara,

St. Mary of the Valley staff and all of you for making possible this visit to Peru. It was wonderful to spend %me with

the Mary Bloom Center children and their families - and to stay at the girl’s orphanage here in Puno.

Highlight of visit

For me the highlight of the visit was the marriage of Dominic and JoAnna who were part of the nine person

delega%on. I´ve known Dominic for about twenty years and was delighted when he met JoAnna, a beau%ful girl with a

deep faith like his own. I encouraged them to get married in Peru and gave three reasons:

1) Why wait? Studies show that when a man and woman have made a basic commitment of their lives, they gain li1le

and can lose a lot by wai%ng.

2) They would avoid the nightmare of finding the "perfect se5ng" with all the implied compe%%on - and deciding who to invite and who not to

invite.

3) It would be a beau%ful experience for the children and families of the Mary Bloom Center. The children enthusias%cally took part in learning

songs in English & Spanish - and forming an honor guard for the bride &

groom.

St. Mary of the Valley Approach to Marriage

Beyond these reasons I have to say that I like the St. Mary of the Valley

approach. When I became pastor seven and a half years ago, I inherited the

custom of monthly blessing of those with anniversary of matrimony. This

blessing emphasizes that marriage is not a day but a life%me. And for life

eternal. Today St. Paul tells to work and pray to overcome divisions. That's

the reason, by the way, that God set up this whole scheme of marriage and

family: That we would learn love, not just for a day, but for life eternal.

Divine Nupals as Key to Unlocking the Bible

Venerable Bishop Sheen used to say that the key to unlocking the Bible is the

"Divine Nup%als." The Bible begins with the marital union of our first parents

and concludes with Jesus the Bridegroom receiving his bride the Church. We

see the Divine Nup%als wri1en on almost every page. It's interes%ng in this Sunday´s Gospel that when Jesus

calls James and John they "leave their boat and their father." The book of Genesis describes that reordering of

one's life: father and mother no longer have first place, but rather one's spouse.

Generaons of Faith

I am looking forward to Genera%ons of Faith this Wednesday. I have been thinking a lot about the role of the

Holy Spirit in our lives and in human history. One of the audio books I brought with me to Peru is American

Miracle by Michael Medved. A Jewish man of deep faith he writes about the role of divine providence in the

early history of our na%on. Providence - the working of the Holy Spirit - is a profound mystery yet we do get

glimpses, especially in light of the Bible and our Creed. I hope to explore that with you and to have %me to pray

together before Jesus truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.

Daily prayer for life Heavenly Father, as the author of life, touch

with compassion the hearts of those women and

men who, with your help, have conceived

human life and now think of abortion, not

parenthood. Help them to understand that their

newly created child and all children are made in

your image and likeness, made for eternal life.

Dispel their fears and helplessness and give

them true and generous hearts to love their

babies and give them birth and all the needed

care that a parent alone can give. And when

your children turn away from you through

abortion, penetrate their hearts to seek your

loving forgiveness and healing power.

Finally, Lord, soen the hearts of the

abortionists, and enlighten all elected o cials

to accept your loving grace and to recognize

and protect the inviolability and sanctity of all

human life from conception to natural death.

Amen.

Generations of Faith 2016-2017

Generations of Faith is St. Mary’s “all generation” religious education. Please join us to share a free family meal followed by our

theme of the year, The Creed and Professing our Faith catechesis. 2016-2017 Sessions

1/25/17 2/22/17 3/22/17 4/26/17

Child care available at all sessions.

Orange registration forms are available in the north vestibule for the 2016-2017 school year.

Please complete one form for your whole family.

Liturgy of the Word for Children Children’s Liturgy is actually the Liturgy of

the Word for children. There is no preregistration required. We cover the

Gospel of the day at a level the children can understand and enjoy. We enrich this with

discussion, prayers, songs and plays. We also try to raise awareness of God’s

love, the humanity of Jesus, the Seasons of the Church, the understanding of symbols in the Mass and the context of the Bible. Our

aim is to make the children’s experience of church meaningful, whilst helping them to grow in the faith of the Catholic Church

and develop as full and active members of our Parish Community. During the 9:30 am Mass and before the Liturgy of the Word,

Father Bloom invites children up to the sanctuary. The children will receive a blessing from Father and then process to their

classroom. After Children’s Liturgy, the children will process to the main vestibule and quietly return to their families. Note: At

least two students will be chosen to bring up the gifts. Thank you for your continued prayers and support during this ministry; It is a blessing to watch these little disciples grow in their faith while

lifting up Jesus and loving others.

Read Sunday’s Gospel: Matthew 4:12-23 Gospel Summary The reading today from Matthew’s Gospel takes place early in Jesus’ ministry. Several ideas are clear. First of all, Matthew strived to connect his Gospel for the early Christians to their Jewish heritage. He made several references in his Gospel like the one today in which prophecies of old are fulfilled in Jesus. The second thing was that Jesus learned of John the Baptist’s arrest and resolved to begin his ministry away from Herod. Finally, Jesus called with some urgency, his first four disciples. The common thread to all this was that God’s Kingdom was at hand. Reflection for Families There are few people in the world who understand the immediacy of today’s Gospel like a parent does! The demands of the day are genuinely important, from the first stirrings of the morning, into the commitment-filled day, to the evening and bedtime routine. A huge part of our day requires a “stop-on-a-dime” reaction from us. Many things we “stop-on-a-dime” for are important, but have we thought today how the urgency of our day-to-day decisions compares to the urgency of Jesus calling his disciples? With what urgency do we call our children to discipleship? How do they recognize us as disciples of Jesus? Bringing the Gospel into Your Family Following the evening meal or when your family gathers for bedtime prayers, share one thing about your day that indicates you are a “fisher of people.” Encourage all members of the family to think about how they are disciples for Jesus—how they carry the Good News into the neighborhood, their school, or their work.

Finding Forgiveness Linda is a woman who had an abortion. She writes, “My breaking

point with …[my former] Church was when I was feeling truly guilty because of what I had done, I knew it was wrong, but people were trying to justify it to me. I didn’t need justification, I needed to know

how to reconcile an already fragmented relationship with the Lord I desired... but I was too weighed down and no one seemed to see

the need of forgiveness and reconciliation, at least until I came into

contact with the Catholic Church. The funny thing is, so many people seem to see the Church as uncompassionate and uncaring, it was

where I found love, acceptance, and forgiveness...”

How you Help others by donating to SVdP Part One--Your Food Donations---

When you donate food to SVdP it is stored in a pantry here at St. Mary of the Valley Catholic Church. Every member of SVdP has access to the pantry to create "food baskets" that they take with them when they visit those in need. We take care when creating our "food baskets" to take a variety of items that we try to match to the situation of those we are visiting. This last week I had an elderly, infirmed couple staying at the Fairgrounds Inn with their two aged dogs. I took soups, instant oatmeal and condensed milk and top ramen along with cans of meat, vegetables and fruits. They needed foods that provided an entire meal yet were simple to prepare with just a microwave. Cathy Lenac also uses the food you donate to help out people who come directly to our church looking for help. Commonly donated food items are cans of vegetables (mostly corn), canned fruit (usually fruit cocktail, peaches or pears) and dry rice, pasta and oatmeal. These things are great because they are basic and make a good starting point for our "food baskets". But, if you really want to add something special when you donate food, soups, canned meat, sauces, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce and cake mixes help liven up the choices we can provide together. No one should ever be without food. Your food donations to SVdP keeps food available to those in need at all times.
