“NEW TRENDS AND DEVELOPMENTSIN WEBSITE PRESENCE”
How your website can serve as education andtraining for your customers and staff.
As new computerized cars become more evident in today’s market, technicians need a lot more specialized training to repairs vehicles and cost of repairs are increasing accordingly. One challenge of the shop is education of customers as to why the repairs are needed, the
specialized equipment needed for repairs and the ever increasing cost of the repairs. The use of videos, repair details and interactive communication on your website can help
ease the customer frustrations and the “sticker-shock” they might experience if they are not aware of the new technology.

Was it a Christmas Party or a networking event? It would be correct to
say both. Where could find a better venue to meet people than a Christmas Party? And, where else could you find a better group of individuals that share your automotive interest than at an ASA monthly meeting? Individuals join organizations that support common interest to take advantage of the networking opportunities.
One of the largest and most established networking groups in the world is BNI, short for Business Networking International. BNI has over 40 operating chapters just on the west side of Houston. One of their fundamental philosophes is called the VCP process or Visibility, Credibility, and Profitability. One might realize that before anyone would want to do business with you, they must trust you. In BNI speak, that is credibility, which usually matures over time as people get to know each other. Probably you have heard it this way…people do business with people they know, like, and trust.
Too bad all ASA meetings can't be this much fun! Attendees were rewarded with lots of good food, libations, prizes and a chance to formally meet other ASA members. An ASA associate member may be
looking for a shop owner needing his products or services, while an ASA shop owner might be looking for someone to share ideas that improve the quality of repair or decrease the time to service. However, before you can learn or profit from others, you must get to know them first.
And where would any Christmas Party be without gifts? Members were so supportive of Blue Santa this year. I am sure you have heard the reason for the season is giving and it was so good to see our members fill the room with Blue Santa gifts that I am sure will make Christmas better for many less fortune children. And, if you missed the December meeting or forgot your present at the shop, it is not too late. The Blue Santa organization is a 24/7, 365 days a year
operation and is ready to accept your gifts, help and financial support. The Blue Santa program began in 1984 and is supported by private donations and bi weekly contributions from over 1500 Houston Police Officers. Together they typically help over 10,000 economically disadvantaged children
on a yearly basis. You can call Martha Bailey at 713-247-8730 or email [email protected]. Donors can use [email protected].
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our ASA members.

I first want to express my thanks for all that attended the Christmas Gathering and contributed a toy to the Blue Santa campaign.
I’m sure ASA provided a Christmas to dozens of children that might not have had a Christmas otherwise. In addition to helping Blue Santa, those that were in attendance were treated to some good food, a fun “get to know one another” game, some nice raffle gift cards and lots of networking. And congratulations to Eddie Roman of Galson Auto for winning the $50 Horse Choking Wad.
As we move into 2018, I also want to wish everybody a Happy New Year with hopes that each and every ASA member and sponsor will see a prosperous and successful 2018.
Shop Talk
I’m sure you noticed the new look of this issue of Shop Talk. This is one of several changes that you will see incorporated into ASA for 2018. And thinking about Shop Talk, we have a couple of spots open for new ads. If you want to promote your services to the chapter and beyond, connect with me for size and price options.
With some possible additional ads, Shop Talk may be going to 16 pages soon so we need articles as well. If you have some shop wisdom to share, some product information or some experiences to relate, be sure to write them up and send them in. I will review and edit so even if your writing is not
perfect, we can make it work.
Meeting Sponsors Needed
If you have been considering sponsoring an ASA meeting during 2018, now is the time to get on the schedule. There are still four months open for sponsorship. It would be ideal if I can get commitments for all 11 (excluding December) of the 2018 meetings earlier rather than later. As replies come in, I may have to ask for possible date changes to keep programing varied from month to month. This assures sponsors and speakers a better attendance and interest. If I get an abundance of affirmative answers, perhaps I can fill in some 2019 dates.
The meeting sponsorship is $600 which comes with a few perks:
+ 2-3 months of exposure in Shop Talk. If known in advance, Shop Talk announces you are sponsoring the upcoming meeting. You can contribute an article that supports your speaker's topic at this time or the following month. The month of your meeting, Shop Talk highlights you (with your logo) on the front cover with speaker biography. A recap of the meeting topic, speaker and sponsor (with photos if available) follows in the next month Shop Talk issue.
+ A personal phone call, email and fax to each member and non-member announcing you as the sponsor for the upcoming meeting.
+ 15-minute advertising presentation during your sponsored meeting.
+ You may place a marketing piece on the eating tables.
+ You can have your company gifts or prizes given at your sponsored meeting to advertise.
+ Your logo and tag line flashed on the screen prior to meeting
+ Your valued support of ASA Houston Chapter!
If you are open to sponsorship, will you please respond and let me know? I will contact you and arrange the details. You can respond via email or call me on my cell at 281.802.0441.
Chapter Meetings
We hope to begin having announcements, associate member information and sponsor information available on the screen prior to each meeting. If you are an associate member, please make sure I have your 2018 logo and tag line if it is changing.
We are also going to begin providing an “information table” for handouts, brochures and information for those that want to provide information that are NOT the meeting sponsor or speaker. We are asking to reserve the center of the eating tables exclusively for the meeting sponsor and speaker.
And don’t forget to contribute your company goodies or special gifts to the raffle each month. The money from the raffle goes a long way to supporting your ASA and providing for part of the meal cost and general operating cost of Houston ASA, including the Christmas Gathering.
We are seeking your input about meetings. At each meeting, you will find a comment cards on the table and we would love for you to take a moment and let us know your thoughts. If you want to personally hear back from the speaker, you can include your name and we will pass the information on to the speaker or sponsor.
Last notes
Please pay your membership dues and/or advertising billing as soon as you can so we can get all those pesky details out of the way and we can enjoy the year.
ASA Houston Chapter is looking for leaders. If you want to take an active roll in leading ASA into 2018 and beyond, please connect with Chuck Stasny.
Again, have a wonderful New Year with peace, prosperity and good will.

In 1990 Byron Rusk founded Car Pros for Kids – each year in February, auto shops all over
Houston participate in raising a substantial amount of money for Child Advocates.
Car Pros for Kids is held every year throughout the entire month of February, traditionally one of the slowest months for auto repair shops. By participating in Car Pros for Kids, your shop will benefit in many ways, including adding sales to your bottom line during a slow season, will bring
in new customers and you are helping abused children.
Customers make a minimum donation of $35.00 to Child Advocates and receive 2 free oil changes to be used on the same vehicle anytime during the year. This guarantees that anyone who donates will become a repeat customer during the year.
Donations can be made at participating Car Pros for Kids auto shop locations or on-line (each individual participating shop is listed on the Child Advocates website with
a locating map and information).
Child Advocates, Inc. mobilizes court appointed volunteers to break the vicious cycle of child abuse. They speak up for abused children who are lost in the system and guide them to safe environments where the children can thrive.
For more information, contact Byron Rusk for details on how this benefits your shops. Call Byron at 713-303-4133 or email him at [email protected].

NEW ASSOCIATE MEMBER
For many years, the General Motors corporate ACDelco and GM Parts sales teams operated separately.
Early in 2016, the sales teams were combined under the umbrella of General Motors Customer Care and Aftersales. We are the aftermarket sales team assigned to help General Motors vehicle owners find the Genuine Original Equipment parts and ACDelco branded parts for their vehicle during the entire ownership experience. We work with our local GM wholesale dealers and wholesale distributors to provide product sales and service support to service centers, collision centers and fleet operations who choose to promote and install the Genuine GM and ACDelco brands. Your local Houston area field managers are Bobby Spears, Charles Fogleman and Joey Marfin. We look forward to supporting the Automotive Service Association chapter here in Houston.
