It is time to cast aside conventional leadership. Innovative leadership is the key to survival,

said Michael Jordaan,  founder of MonteGray Capital. The former CEO of First National Bank (FNB) in South Africa was speaking to guests at the Pan Pacific Singapore on 18 November 2015 about what it takes to become an innovative leader. The talk was presented by SIM Professional Development, in collaboration with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the London Speaker Bureau.

Jordaan’s climb to fame was leading FNB to clinch the title of “World’s Most Innovative Bank” in the 2012 BAI-Financial Global Banking Innovation Awards. His other accolades include winning the CNBC Africa Business Leader of the Year for Southern Africa award. Since helming FNB, his journey of transforming the once traditional bank to become a role model for innovation had spanned nearly a decade.

The down-to-earth speaker kept the talk light-hearted with handy trivia and memorable mottoes.

“Stuff the strong. Only the innovative shall survive!” claimed Jordaan, highlighting to the audience the title of his talk. “It’s my belief that being big is not so important anymore.”

Simply put, innovators are people who are able to look at a situation, understand the rules, then change the rules, and do great things, albeit not in conventional ways sometimes.

Jordaan shared a valuable lesson he learned about leadership and how it changed his perspective. “When I was a young CEO, I was always keen to impress, thinking that any success was because I played a role in it,” he said. “Later in my career, I realised my behaviour was completely wrong.”

The right way would be to recognise and praise others in the team for doing a great job. When things go wrong, a good leader would step up and be accountable. Deal with what went wrong at a later time. He urged the audience to discover how motivating it can be for their organisations and teams if their leaders behaved this way.

Lessons from an Innovative Leader“The role of leadership is not to make good decisions. It is to

facilitate good decision-making,” he argued.

On a personal level, it is not always easy for a leader, he conceded. Leaders have to buy into the empowered culture, and not think that they ought to have all the

answers because they are in senior positions.

“When leaders reach the top, they tend to take themselves very seriously. What this means is that you might hold yourself back from asking questions which may sound stupid,” Jordaan said. Being an innovative leader is not all rosy, and he  confessed candidly that he has had his feelings hurt when told that some of his ideas were stupid.

Thankfully for Jordaan, such brunt moments motivated him to generate more ideas instead. And he has a solution to help other leaders combat the fear of looking silly.

Fun, coffee, and drinks! “When you have a bit of fun, have coffee or drinks, you don’t take yourself so seriously, you don’t care about looking stupid that much, and that’s when innovation really happens!” he explained.

Ideas are important ingredients to an innovative culture, but it is not the  be–all and end–all of innovation.

“In a room full of energy, we can come up with great ideas, but innovation isn’t about ideas. Innovation is about the great idea implemented, and that’s the Innovator’s Dilemma we face,” he said. “In fact, nearly all the problems in the world can be solved, but the struggle we have is with implementation.”

For Joseph Alfred, Head of Policy and Technical at ACCA, this talk stood out among other leadership talks as it was a good reminder of what it means for true innovation to happen.

“Stuff the strong. Only the innovative

shall survive!”
