January 2015 THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE BELTED GALLOWAY SOCIETY, INC. US Beltie News Lifetime and Yearly Awards Announced www.beltie.org President Michelle Ogle Happy New Year! It is hard to believe that a year has passed since I wrote my first message as president. I am honored to be able to continue in this position for 2015. I want to thank all the membership for the time and effort they put in every day to care for, promote, and further this amaz- ing breed of cattle. From the small farm with one or two head, to the largest of operations, every time someone sees the cattle out in the field, at a show, on display, reads an advertisement, or sees a picture on social media, our breed is promoted to the benefit of the entire membership. By the time this newsletter arrives, you all should have received your mem- bership update and dues notices. Please make sure to take the time to update all of your contact information. We have found that many members have not updated their information and it makes it hard for us contact you or include you in some of the information we send out each year. Remember, this infor- mation is available for all prospective buyers through the CLRC website and via a link to CLRC from our own website. Your next customer may be trying to reach you! As we go into this New Year, I want to take the time to thank all of our Council members and contract labor for their service and dedication to our Society. The many hours of time and funds you volunteer to the Society is greatly appreciated. Thank you to Scott Griffith (TX) for his years of service on Council, we will miss you. I would also like to welcome to our newest Council member, Michael Crittenden (UT). I look forward to serving the membership in the coming year! On behalf of the Belted Galloway breed we are happy to announce the Lifetime Point Awards and Show Point Awards. The Point Show Awards were established many years ago to recognize the cattle that have been shown throughout year and earned the most show points. Rota-Spring Farm of Sterling, Massachusetts. Keely exhibited at the

Big E, Fryeburg Fair, and many New England venues.

In honor of Army National Guard PFC Keely R. Walsh, the

Jade attended the 2012 National Belted Galloway Sale and purchased the right to flush the 2011 Belted Galloway Show Female of the Year, Aldermere Xanderlee 32345B. Matt and Jade chose to flush Xanderlee to Platinum Life-time and three-time National Champion Bull, Anderson Hill Bop Man 10516-D. Step Aside’s five generational pedigree is filled with noteworthy Scottish lineages used in the Anderson Hill and Aldermere farms’ breeding programs. She has been described as an attractive profiling, powerfully made, deep-bodied heifer with a wonderful expansion of rib. Step Aside’s impressive show career includes being named the 2014 Grand Champion Heifer at the Fryeburg Fair in Maine. The right to flush PCSC Step Aside will be offered as a genetic lot in the 25th Annual National Belted Galloway Sale on April 25th, 2015 in Fryeburg, Maine. Runner-Up: Meadowood Abbey 111A (AI) 37497B Show Bull of the Year, Countyline Connor 37033B, is sired by the two-times Show Sire of the Year Southdown Unique 11781B, and out of Rolling

Acres Delores 31318B, the 2013 Show Dam of the Year. Connor is owned by Sunnybrook Farms, Belvidere, Illinois. Connor was bred by Jay and Liz Dausman, Countyline Belties, Pierceton, Indiana. His full sisters are Coun-tyline Anna who was the 2012 runner-up for Show Female of the Year and Countyline Billie Jo who was the 2013 Show Female of the Year. Connor had an exceptional 2014 show season where he was champion bull at all the shows he attended. He concluded the year by being named the National Re-serve Champion Bull at NAILE. His exceptional muscle, bone, and freedom of movement, have been commented on by many judges. The Willis family would like to thank the Dausmans for making Connor available to them. They also wish to recognize junior member, Adam McConnell, who had the most difficult job of all, at the halter showing and presenting a yearling bull that was “feeling his oats.” Runner-Up: Moonshadow Kahlua 35947D

Show Cow/Calf of the Year, Sunnybrook Alexis 29180B, is bred and owned by Sunnybrook Farms, Belvidere, Illinois. She is sired by the Platinum and two-times Sire of the Year, Linetree’s Pistol Pete 9535B. Her Platinum

awarded dam, Sunnybrook Elaine 24684B, was the past Show Female of the Year. Alexis is remarkable in that she is the only female in the breed to be Show Female of the Year out of a Show Female of the Year. She was also named the 2013 Show Cow/Calf of the Year. At seven years of age, she easily maintains her soundness and eye appeal. She has transferred these traits to her offspring. All five of her calves have competed at the national level. A son, Sunnybrook Cruise, was runner-up for Show Bull of the Year. Alexis has also earned Platinum Lifetime status. She is pictured above with her calf, Sunnybrook Alexander, who was Reserve Bull Calf Champion at NAILE. Alexander is sired by the past Show Bull of the Year and is the 2014 Sire of the Year, Sunnybrook Valor. Runner-Up: Dickinson Acres Zarha (AI) 34551B Show Sire of the Year, Sunnybrook Valor 33432B, is the first offspring of the 2009 Show Bull of the Year and 2012 Sire of the Year Stonesthrow Um-bro 11941B. Valor is out of a first-calf female and a Linetree’s Pistol Pete daughter, Sunnybrook Legacy 29178B. He is bred and owned by Chris and

Steve Willis, Sunnybrook Farms Belvidere, Illinois. Valor is the result of a

pedigree whose first three generations boast a two-time Sire of the Year, two

Dams of the Year, and four Platinum Lifetime Award winners. He was named Show Bull of the year in 2011. His first offspring have been success-fully shown at all levels and he has achieved Suunybook’s most valued recognition as Sire of the Year. Sunnybrook Farms thanks the Eric Finholdt family of Medford, Minnesota for their purchase of Valor. Runner-Up: Anderson Hill Bop Man 10615D

Show Dam of the Year, Aldermere Xanderlee 32345B, continues to build her legacy as one of the signature females at Aldermere Farm of Rockport, Maine. After being undefeated in 2011, her final win was the National Grand Champion Belted Galloway Heifer at Louisville, KY and later named Show Female of the Year. Aldermere Farm certainly values her success in the show ring but is more excited about the genetic potential she offers them and the breed. After two successful flushes, including the flush that Matt Thurston bought in the National Sale that produced this year’s Show Female of the Year, Xanderlee will have multiple progeny in Aldermere’s 2015 show string. They are anxiously awaiting the arrival of her natural calf in January

2015. It will be the first calf to hit the ground in the United States from the award-winning Scottish bull, Southfield Major Ronaldo. Xanderlee is the daughter of Gold Lifetime Award winner, Aldermere Shoshanah 27238B, and previous National Grand Champion Bull and Platinum Lifetime Award achiever, Aldermere Lance 8071B. Aldermere Farm is owned and operated by Maine Coast Heritage Trust.

Runner-up: Meadowood Welwyn 64W 32216B Breeder of the Year – Sunnybrook Farms. Over the past 15 years, The Willis Family, Sunnybrook Farms, Belvidere, Illinois have produced numer-ous show animals of the year. The farm has implemented the use of produc-tion records, DNA trait identification, and carcass results from the use of ultrasound and slaughter data to further the predictability of the offspring from their herd. The cattle who have won awards have produced progeny who have continued the tradition of winning the same awards as previous generations, thus creating breeding cattle with generations of predictable performance packed into their pedigrees. The end result is a uniform and consistent calf crop that is successful and performs for the Willis family as

well as other cattle breeders. The Willis family stated, “Being named Breed-er of the Year is the ultimate praise for a breeding program and we appreciate all of our present and future customers.” Exhibitor of the Year – Sunnybrook Farms. Sunnybrook Farms is located in Belvidere, Illinois and owned by the Willis family. With their extensive Angus background they breed their Belties for the combination of quality, carcass, and conformation that will perform in the show ring and in the pas-ture. They shared, “This is not just a fancy saying for marketing, but the foundation we have used for developing our herd over the years.” The farm is based around 20 proven Belted Galloway females that have produced or developed four show females of the year, five show bulls of the year, three dams of the year, six sires of the year, and three cow/calf pairs of the year. The Willis family recognizes the support they have received. They stated, “This award is almost impossible without the help of our awesome customers and Beltie friends. We would like to sincerely thank all our Beltie friends who have helped us throughout the show season. And thank you to all of our customers, especially the juniors, from coast to coast that have had confi-

dence in our program.”

Show Cow/Calf of the Year Sunnybrook Alexis 29180B.

Bred & owned by Steve & Chris Willis (IL).

Breeder and Exhibitor of the Year. Steve, Terry, Julie & Chris

Willis with Adam McConnell, Sunnybrook Farms, Belvidere (IL).

Oklahoma — The Sooner State

Past President Jon Bednarski

The first stop on our 4000-mile Southwest ranch tour was Oklahoma. Oklahoma has approximately 25 members and around 180 registered Belties. In early 2011, I met Chris and Claire Johnson of Buffalo Dream Ranch at the Texas (now the Southwestern) Belted Galloway Association's spring show and sale. I promised the Johnsons that when I made it to Oklahoma—I would visit their ranch. It took Sylvia and me a few years to reach Oklahoma, but our

visit was worth the wait! Buffalo Dream Ranch is located about forty miles west of Lawton in Southwestern Oklahoma. Lawton, which has a military base, is actually where Chris and Claire met over 40 years ago. Claire's dad, who was in the Swiss Army, moved his family from Switzerland to Lawton for a one-year training program. The rest of the story is history because Claire's next-door neighbor was Chris and they now have been married for 36 years. The Johnsons have three grown sons. Two of their sons live outside of the United States; one in Switzerland and one in Brazil. Their third son is in the process of moving back to Oklahoma. After their early days in Oklahoma, Chris returned to college and received his mechanical engineering degree. Chris has had a diverse engineering career in Texas, South Carolina, Illinois, and Michigan and later returned to Oklahoma. In 2001, they bought their first two properties, the home parcel and a mountain wilderness property. Before moving full time to the ranch in 2004, Chris and Claire drove from Michigan to make improvements to their property. Today the ranch has expanded

to five parcels totaling around 400 acres and includes 12 ponds, 13 structures, plus a beautiful home. Two of the smaller parcels contain rental houses and paddocks for Belties. Over the past decade, the majority of the labor required to accomplish the improvements at Buffalo Dream Ranch was done by the Johnsons. In 2009, Claire read an article about Belties in the Hobby Farms magazine and she was hooked on the breed. The first four Belties came to the ranch in 2009 from Aavalon Farm in Texas. The herd has now grown to 25 head but not without some major challenges. The current Western Oklahoma drought ranks among the worst of the last century and a half. Violent fires affected the ranch in 2011 and again in 2012 when 80% of their trees and grasses were severely burned. Fortunately, local fire fighters were able to save their home and all but one barn. No cattle were lost in the fire, but the horrible conditions following required a sale of much of their herd. Recovery for Buffalo Dream Ranch has been a challenge. Many of us might have packed up and moved—but not the Johnsons. Chris now works full-time on the ranch to finish the two rental homes, restore his pastures and hay fields, develop the ranch’s recreational potential, and work service jobs. Claire manages the ranch’s breeding and pasture rotation program, while also working several jobs part-time. Chris and Claire consider themselves ‘diversified’ as a matter of necessity. Their business card reads: Registered Belted Galloways, Lodging, Hiking, Bouldering, Bird Watching, Photography, Backhoe Service, Welding, Repair, and Machining.

As Sylvia and I headed to New Mexico after our visit, we

both agreed that with the Johnsons’ commitment,

determination, and drive, they should rename their place The

Amazing Buffalo Dream Ranch!
