IhopeeveryonehashadanoutstandinglambingseasonandisreadyforanothergreatyearintheSouthdownbusiness.This,oursecondSouthdown Journal & Directory,isduetoallthepeoplewhohavesupporteduswithadsandarticles.IwanttomakesureIsaythankyou.Ihopethatifyoudidn’tadvertisethisyear,thatyouwillconsiderusfortheLouisville Previewthisfallornextyear’sJournalandDirectory.

TheHairyLambissueisaproblemthathasnaggedourbreedforalongtimeanditisexcitingtohavesomerealanswersatlast.IaskyoutopleasecarefullyreadtheHairyLambreportthatisinthisissue.Iknowthatasweidentifycarriers,wewillhavesomenegativeconcerns,butintheend,itwillhelpmoveourbreedforwardandmakeusstronger.Ipersonallywanttothankthecommitteefortheirworkandallofthosewhosentinsamplestohelpwiththeresearch.

Foranumberofyears,intheearlyhistoryoftheAssociation,flockbookswerepublishedwithinformationonthepedigreesofthesheepregistered.Inmorerecenttimes,theSouthdownhandbookwasprintedwithvaluableinformationonthebreedandalistofcurrentbreeders.

Today,thisSouthdownJournalandDirectoryiscompiledandprintedwiththesamegoalinmind,andthatistoprovideyouwithcurrentinformationthatwillhelpduringtheyear.YouwillfindinformationonmanyoftheyouthprogramstheAssociationsponsors,alongwithalistofcurrentjuniorandadultmembers,andmuchmore.Furthermore,youwillfindmanyoftheeliteflocksinthebreedhavechosentosupportthispublicationwithinformationconcerningtheirflocks.

Hairy Lamb Research ProjectDearFriends,

Forthepast5to6yearstheAmericanSouthdownBreedersAssociationhasbeenworkingwithDr.JonBeeverinanefforttodetermineacauseforthe“hairy”lambsthathavebeenseeninSouthdownflocksforthepast25to30years.Dr.BeeverisageneticistattheUniversityofIllinoisandhashelpedfindageneticcauseforanumberofdiseasesinmultiplespeciesincludingthe“SpiderLamb”problemthatwecurrentlytestforinsheep.WehavebeensendingDr.Beeversamplesforthepastseveralyearsinanattempttofindageneticcauseforhairylambs.Thisissuehasbeencloudedbecausethereisaconditionthatcancauseasimilardiseasethatiscausedbyaviralagent.Theselambsweretraditionallycalled“HairyShakerLambs”becausetheyhadhairandwouldoftenshakeandexhibitneurologicsymptoms.While“hairy”Southdownsweresimilarinappearance,theydidnotshowallofthesamesymptoms.Inaddition,theSouthdownhairylambsdidnotshowthesamepatternofdiseaseprevalencethatwastraditionallyseenwith“HairyShakerLambs”.

Asofthelastfewmonths,itappearsthatthemysterysurroundingSouthdownhairylambsmaybecomingtoaconclusion.OnDecember20,2011IreceivedanemailfromDr.BeeverindicatingthathemayhavefoundageneassociatedwiththecauseofhairylambsinSouthdowns.IntheDecemberemailDr.BeeveraskedforanumberofsamplesofnormalappearingSouthdownsfromaroundthecountrytodetermineifhistestwasaccurate.ThesesamplesweresubmittedtowardtheendofJanuary2012.Closeto400samplesweresubmittedalongwiththesamplesofanimalsaffectedwiththisdisorderthathadalreadybeensubmittedtohislaboverthepastseveralyears.Thetestresultsappeartobeveryconclusiveatthistimeregardingthegeneinvolved.Asimilardisorderfoundinmiceandhumansalsoappearstohaveamutationatthissamegenelocationwhichprovidesmoreevidencethatwemayhavefoundourgene!

Dr.BeeveriscurrentlyconcludinghisanalysisofthedataandworkingwithDr.Steffen,apatholo-gist,attheUniversityofNebraskaincataloguingthevariousdefectsthatthisgenemutationappearstocause.Whenhisanalysisanddocumentationofthepathologyregardinghairylambsiscomplete,Dr.BeeverwillbesubmittingafullreporttotheASBABoardofDirectors.Atthistimewedonotknowwhenatestforhairylambswillbecommerciallyavailablenordowehaveanyideaofthecostofsuchatest.TherehavealsobeennodecisionsordiscussionsregardingtheASBApolicyconcerningthistestbecauseDr.Beeverhasnotcompletedhisresearchandtherearestillquestionsthatneedtobeanswered.InthefuturetheASBAwillcontinuetopassoninformationregardingthissituationassoonasitismadeavailable.Ifyouhaveanyquestionregardingthisissue,pleasecontacttheASBAofficeoryoucanreachmebyemailatsaflanagan85@gmail.com.

*Flash - On March 26, 2012, Dr. Jon Beever emailed the ASBA office with the following:The University of Illinois will begin accepting samples on April 1,2012 for testing for hairy lamb carriers. The cost of the test is $8 per sample. This will be available until a commercial test becomes available. Please contact the ASBA office for particulars on collection and sending of samples.

Successfulshowmenstartveryearlyintheprojectyear.Theystartwithselection.Obviously,itiseasierandmorefuntostartwiththebestanimalavailable.Showmanshipneedstobepartoftheselectionpro-cess.Structurallysound,wellbalanced,lambsareeasiertomakelookgood.Somearebornwithstyle

andpresence.Somelambssimplyshowbetterthanothers.Somelambsareborntobraceandshow.Itisoftengenetic.Whensortingthroughthepentofindshowlambs,findthebestlambsandcatchthem.Tryshow-ingandbracingeachone.Findtheonesthat

workbestforyou.Startwithagoodlambthatwantstoshowandwantswin.Itmakestheprocesseasier,fun,andmoresuccessful.Startworkingwithlambswhentheyareyoung.Manyfolksstartworkingwiththelambsasearly30daysofageandoftenby60-80daysofage.Startwithsimplycatchingthelamb,tohelpcalmthemdown.Startteachingthemtobrace.Beginsettingthefeet.Keepthingssimpleandposi-tiveinthebeginning.Mostexhibitorsareusinghal-terstohelpexercise,moveandmanagetheirlambs.Halterbreakinglambscanstartatanearlyage.Mostexhibitorsstarthalterbreakingtheirlambssoonaftertheyhavebeenselected.Startbytyingthelambstoafenceorwall.Tietheminasafeplacetopreventthepotentialofanyinjuries.Thelambsheadshouldbetiedacomfortable,upandalertposition.Thiswillhelpteachthesheeptowalkandshowwiththeirheadinanuprightandalertposition.Neverleavealambtiedupandunattended.Starttowalkthelambonthehalter.Mostoftensheepareleadontheirleft,likecattleandhorses.Moreandmorejudgesareputtingemphasisonhowthesheeplookonthemove.Itisalsoimportanttopracticewalkingthesheepwithouta

halter.Mostlambsarestillshownwithouthalters.PRACTICE.

Sheeparehandledmorebyjudgesthantheotherspeciesoflivestock,Touchbecomesveryimportant.Howasheepbraceseffectshowthesheepfeelstothetouch.Toomanyexhibitorsdon’tunderstandthatthegoalofbracingalambistomakethatlambfeelfirmtothetouch.Don’tjustgothroughthemotions.Bracingthelambneedstomakethelambhandlefirm.Itisimportantwhenbracingthelambintheshowringtokeepallfourofthelamb’sfeetontheground.Somesheepandsomeexhibitorshaveatendencytooverbrace.Thelambhandlesfirm,butfallsapart.Lambsthatareoverbracingoftensquat,sinkintotheirfrontandbreakovertheirtop.Thesheepandtheexhibitorneedtolooknaturalwhilebracing.Thejudgedoesnothandlethesheepwiththeireyesclosed.PRACTICE.Mostexhibitorsstartworkingwiththeirshowsheepatleast60-90daysbeforethefirstshow.Atypicalprac-ticeschedulewouldinclude3-4daysofshowmanshippracticeeachweek.Howlongeachanimalisworkedwithisdeterminedbyhowlongtheclasswilllast.10-15minutesforeachlambiscommon.Don’tforgetthegranddrive.Thelambandtheexhibitorneedtobeinshape.Itiswork.Ithelpstohavesomeoneelsetohandlethelambwhiletheyarebeingworkedwith.Thisallowsthesheeptobecomefamiliarwithhowtheywillbehandledintheshowring.Italsoallowstheexhibitortocontinu-allymonitorthelamb’sbodycondition.Keepthemovementsworkingaroundthesheepeasy,smoothanddecisive,keepthesheepbetweenyouandthejudge.Theexhibitor’sappear-anceandattitudeisanimportantpartofshow-

Yearling Ewe Futurity Rules:TheyearlingeweseligibletoparticipatewerepurchasedthepreviousNovemberattheStarsofLouisvillesale,atafallregionalSouthdownsalethatagreestopay1%grossSouthdownsalecommissiontotheAssociationortattooedandeligibletoparticipateasewelambsforthepreviousyearsfuturitycontest.Yearling’spurchasedinthenameofanoldersibling,thatbecauseofemploymentoradvancededucationisunabletoshowatfairs,maybetransferredtothenameofayoungersibling,butthisappliestotheentireshowseason,notindividualshows.Except7,8&9,allaboveewelambfuturityrulesapplytotheyearlingewefuturity.Atravelingtrophywillbepresentedtothewinner.AllshowsfromJanuary1thruLouisvilleJuniorshowwillbecomeeligibleforyearlingewefuturitypointaccumulation.Thisisintendedtorewardjuniorexhibitorsthathavesuccessinthemidwintershows,suchasTexasandPennsylvania.
