NORTHWEST’S BEST

GoodDog BY PAM NORDY

What a lucky person I am to be able to spend most of my days in the company of dogs and humans who love their pet!

I find that people who love their dogs are fantastic people. They possess some of the same great qualities as dogs such as loyalty, obedience, friendliness (most of the time!) and usually know what they like to eat!

Similar qualities, but different needs! Dogs! A whole different animal! All animals should be fed a ‘species appropriate’ diet. In the case of canines, a grain free food is best. Be a label reader with your pet’s food. Be watchful of words like by-product meal, animal or meat meal. Soluble fiber could actually be sawdust or peanut hulls. Corn has been linked to skin allergies, joint swelling and bloat in dogs, among other things. If you take care of your pet by feeding that all important ‘species appropriate’ diet, you will lessen many common medical issues and have a better chance of spending many quality years with your pet.

At GoodDog, we are dedicated to bringing products that are safe and beneficial. We carry great foods for dogs and cats, toys, apparel and more that help keep your

dog happy and healthy.

Coeur d’Alene is not only a great place to live, but is also a great place to be an animal lover! We have two nice dog parks (thanks to our friends at the KC Dog Park Association) and we have great boarding facilities, groomers and luckily, we have some nice local places that provide services, products and places to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or lunch with your dog.

Take some time to spend with your pet. Your blood pressure will level out nicely and you will make lots of new friends.

GoodDog We believe in quality foods, treats, toys and apparel that is both safe and beneficial for your pet! We also carry quality cat foods! We carry the following brands: Orijen/Acana, Nature’s Logic, Fromms, Stella and Chewy’s, Instinct, PureVita, Taste of the Wild, Weruva, TikiDog, TikiCat, Merrick, Kong, Angel Eyes/Plaque Off, Puppia, Nylabone and more! www.gooddog-us.com.Coeur d’Alene—3115 North Government Way208.664.4364

Start your day with breakfast. Breakfast fills your “empty tank” to get you going after a long night without food and it can help you do better in school. Easy to prepare breakfasts include

cold cereal with fruit and low-fat milk, whole-wheat toast with peanut butter, yogurt with fruit, whole-grain waffles or even last night’s pizza!

Get Moving! It’s easy to fit physical activities into your daily routine. Walk, bike or jog to see friends. Take a 10-minute activity break every hour while you read, do homework or watch TV. Climb stairs instead of taking an escalator or elevator. Try to do these things for a total of 30 minutes every day.

Snack smart. Snacks are a great way to refuel. Choose snacks from different food groups - a glass of low-fat milk and a few graham crackers, an apple or celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins or some dry cereal. If you eat smart at other meals, cookies, chips and candy are okay for occasional snacking.

Work up a sweat. Vigorous work-outs - when you’re breathing hard and sweating - help your heart pump better, give you more energy and help you look and feel best. Start with a warm-up that stretches your muscles. Include 20 minutes of aerobic activity, such as running, jogging, or dancing. Follow-up with activities that help make you stronger such as push-ups or lifting weights.

Then cool-down with more stretching and deep breathing.Balance your food choices - don’t eat too much of any one thing. You don’t have to give up foods like hamburgers, french fries and ice cream to eat healthy. You just have to be smart about how often and how much of them you eat. Your body needs nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, fat and many different vitamins and minerals.

Foods aren’t good or bad. A healthy eating style is like a puzzle with many parts. Each part, or food, is different. Some foods may have more fat, sugar or salt while others may have more vitamins or fiber. There is a place for all these foods. What makes a diet good or bad is how foods fit together. Balancing your choices is important. Fit in a higher-fat food, like pepperoni pizza, at dinner by choosing lower-fat foods at other meals. And don’t forget about moderation. If two pieces of pizza fill you up, you don’t need a third.

Make healthy eating and physical activities fun! Take advantage of physical activities you and your friends enjoy doing together and eat the foods you like. Be adventurous - try new sports, games and other activities as well as new foods. You’ll grow stronger, play longer, and look and feel better! Set realistic goals - don’t try changing too much at once.

10 Tips to a Healthy New You for 2012BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL ON PHYSICAL FITNESS AND SPORTS

Warning Signs for Seniors10 WARNING SIGNS THAT SENIORS MAY BE IN TROUBLE AT HOME

While visiting a senior in their home you may discover that their situation has changed since the last time you were there. These changes don’t automatically indicate that

the individual needs more care but it’s important to be aware so that appropriate measures can be taken. Over 86% of seniors surveyed stated that they wanted to age in their own home. Keeping seniors healthy, happy, active and safe in their own homes is the key. Here are 10 signs that could indicate a senior might need more help at home.

1. A Change in Appearance or Condition of the Home—If mom never cared much about her house, the fact that it’s a little messier than usual might not indicate a problem. However, if the house was always spotless, a messy home might mean trouble is brewing.

2. Clutter—Piles of magazines or clothing could be an indicator that an older adult needs more help.

3. Dirty or Unkempt Clothing—Lack of interest in appearance can be a sign of depression in a senior.

4. Unpaid Bills—A pile of unpaid bills or correspondence is an alarming sign that could require a family caregiver to intervene immediately

in the best interest of a loved one.5. Fresh Food Replaced with Junk Food—A senior

who loses interest in cooking sometimes resorts to junk food.

6. Spoiled Food in the Fridge or Freezer—Spoiled food could be an early sign that a senior no longer has an appetite and is not eating properly.

7. Bugs or Rodents in the Home—An older adult who no longer can clean a home properly may be vulnerable to bugs and rodents.

8. Confusion—Disorientation could be a sign of dementia, a problem with a medication or another medical issue that needs to be assessed by a doctor.

9. Unfilled Prescriptions—A senior could be forgetting to take medications or cannot afford to refill them.

10. Spills on Floors and Countertops—Older adults with mobility problems may no longer be able to clean up spills, reach high places to dust and change light bulbs and bend under beds to take care of messes. To find solutions to these and other issues involving seniors please visit www.CaregiverStress.com.

SnowbowlAN EMINENTLY CHALLENGING MOUNTAIN

It may feel provincial, but with 2,600 vertical feet of skiable terrain, Snowbowl, the local ski area for Missoula, is a hefty, eminently challenging mountain. Thanks to its out-of-the way location, it has undergone relatively little commercial development. The Lilliputian base area is wedged into a valley so narrow that a mountain stream runs beneath the floorboards of the Last Run Saloon. The mountain is served by two chairlifts that take you to Snowbowl’s crowning glory: a half-mile-high face peppered with glades and plastered with powder. Grizzly Chute, the area’s trademark run, is a half-tube that’s roughly the height of the Empire State Building and about as steep. Olympic medalist Billy Kidd has rated it one of the ten toughest runs in the Rockies. Or if you prefer long groomers, then the three mile long Paradise is the run for you. Whatever floats your skis or board, Snowbowl is one of the West’s great bargains. www.montanasnowbowl.com.

Washington state’s best kept secret, 49° North Mountain Resort truly offers adventures for everyone. This traditional Northwest

resort is blessed with wide open groomed runs, moguls, desert dried powder and hundreds of acres of legendary tree skiing. “The peak of winter activity is literally on Chewelah Peak at 49 Degrees North Mountain Resort. With acres of legendary tree skiing, local skiers and riders know that 49 Degrees North is Washington state’s best kept winter secret. Washington state’s second largest ski resort, 49 Degrees North is Located just 9 miles east of Chewelah. 49 Degrees North also has a Nordic ski center complete with 25 kilometers of groomed trails with both track and skate decks. Calypsos Coffee & CreameryECLECTIC FUN AND AMAZING COFFEE

Calypsos was established in 2008. The business was started by a local area native with the desire to be involved with the downtown business district and to also be involved

in working with people. They did this by adding in their personal touch of “LOVE” for Coffee. Calypsos has adapted to local markets and the economy, but the coffee shop’s strengths remain the same: serving a quality product with pride in a timely manner and outstanding customer service in an incredibly captivating, yet comfortable atmosphere.

You’ll find amazing coffee at Calypsos, which they roast on site, and a combination of ice cream, fantastic food and live music on a regular basis. They display artwork from local artists, offer free wi-fi, have a play area for kids and also offer a Smart Room for meeting rentals.

Todd, Maria-Cristina, Kyle, Tyler and Mariah Jenicek are Idaho “natives” and are excited to be involved with Downtown Coeur d’Alene. There’s no place more beautiful than Coeur d’ alene, Idaho and our Calypsos Coffee & Creamery is smack dab in middle of it all. We are one block from the Coeur d’Alene Resort, the Chamber of Commerce and the City Beach. We have seen many changes in this area and the people and we are very excited about what is in our future here with the people who visit and return to Calypsos.

Timberwolves Stomp the Court

The Lake City student body was awarded the Fish by a group of judges from the surrounding area. Tickets for the games were sold out and the games attracted an overflow crowd of

1,800. It was the ninth time in 14 games Lake City has won the fish. It has also been the 2nd time in two years for LC.

“I’m happy for the school,” coach Jim Winger said. “You can’t imagine how much work both of these schools put in to make this happen. It’s an awesome thing.”

The Viking boys outmanned the Timberwolves 55-31 and the Viking girls put a similar hurt on LC 51-31 in Inland Empire League games at Elmer Jordan Court.

LATE FOR SUNDAY SCHOOLThe little boy was late for Sunday school and the superintendent, seeing him slip in, detained him and asked him the reason. The boy shuffled his feet uncertainly for a moment, then blurted out, “I started out to go fishing instead, but my dad wouldn’t let me.”

The superintendent beamed broadly. “A wise father,” he said. “He was quite right not to let you go fishing on a Sunday. Did he explain why?”

The little boy nodded. “Oh, yes sir. He said there wasn’t enough bait for the two of us.”

PET BILLSWhile waiting at the veterinarian’s office, I overheard two women chatting about their dogs.

“What’s your dog’s name?” asked the first woman.

“Well, we used to call her Pork Chop,” answered the second lady. “But after the vet bills we’ve had for her, we now call her Filet Mignon.”

DOG FIGHTA man walks into a bar one day and asks, “Does anyone here own that rottweiler outside?”

“Yeah, I do!” a biker says, standing up. “What about it?”

“Well, I think my chihuahua just killed him...”

“What are you talkin’ about?!” the biker says, disbelievingly. “How could your little runt kill my rottweiler?”

“Well, it seems he got stuck in your dog’s throat!”

EARTH SCIENCE CLASSThe teacher of the earth science class was lecturing on map reading. After explaining about latitude, longitude, degrees and minutes the teacher asked, “Suppose I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude and 45 degrees, 15 minutes east longitude...?”

After a confused silence, a voice volunteered, “I guess you’d be eating alone.”

ILLEGAL TURNA man, in a hurry taking his eight-year-old son to school, made a turn at a red light where it was prohibited.

“Uh-oh, I just made an illegal turn!” the man said.

“Aw, Dad, it’s okay,” the son said. “The police car rightbehind us did the same thing.”

TWO ROACHESTwo roaches were munching on garbage in an alley when one engages a discussion about a new restaurant.

“I was in that new restaurant across the street,” said one. “It’s so clean! The kitchen is spotless, and the floors are gleaming white. There is no dirt anywhere--it’s so sanitary that the whole place shines.” pr0p3rty0fahaj0kes

“Please,” said the other roach frowning. “Not while I’m eating!”
