NEWS FROM THE ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY: The Vincentian Family Today: Recognizing that there is strength in unity and numbers, the international leaders have challenged the Vincentian Family to collaborate more effectively to meet the escalating needs of the world’s poor. St. Vincent de Paul was a master of collaboration and organization. His vision of service entailed connections, relationships, and teamwork. “We should assist the poor in every way, and do it by ourselves and by enlisting the help of others,” Vincent advised. “To do this is to preach the gospel by words and by works.” Through collaboration, the Vincentian Family can, more quickly and more efficiently, fulfill Blessed Frederic Ozanam’s dream of embracing the world in a network of charity. The international leadership urge the various branches of the Vincentian Family to use the excellent resources available to them to do spiritual formation in common. Each branch of the Family has much to offer the others in the field of spirituality, and each can benefit from the sharing of the collective wisdom and grace of the others. Eager to strengthen its relationship with the worldwide Vincentian Family, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in the United States recommends the following websites to its members as excellent resources for formation and education: www.famvin.org, www.ozanet.org, and www.svdpusa.org. Dynamic Catholic.com Be Bold. Be Catholic Are you struggling to see what Faith has to do with everyday life? Is Catholicism still relevant? What does this mean for our relationships and our families? Get these answers...and so much more! Free copies of the “Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic” by Matthew Kelly, are still available at the side door and on the self in the back of Church. This book promises to answer questions and stir a new energy within you. Do not miss this opportunity to join Catholics across our Archdiocese in reading this inspiring book! The Prayer Process (Taken from The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic) 1 Gratitude: Begin by thanking God in a personal dialogue for whatever you are most grateful for today. 2 Awareness: Revisit the times in the past twenty-four hours when you were and were not the-best-version-of-your-self. Talk to God about these situations and what you learned from them. 3 Significant Moments: Identify something you experienced in the last twenty-four hours and explore what God might be trying to say to you through that event (or person). 4 Peace: Ask God to forgive you for any wrong you have committed (against yourself, another person, or Him) and to fill you with a deep and abiding peace. 5 Freedom: Speak with God about how He is inviting you to

change your life, so that you can experience the freedom to be the-best-version-of-yourself. 6 Others: Lift up to God anyone you feel called to pray for today, asking God to bless and guide them. 7 Pray the Our Father.

Our Sympathy: All of us at St. Joachim & St. Joseph join in offering our sympathy and prayers to the families of Larry Payton, brother of Vicki (Dave) Johnson; Thomas E. Bequette (Jr), brother of Glenn, Mark, Alma Allen & Mary Cracciolo. May God continue to comfort their families in the coming days!

THIS WEEK’S READINGS: On this celebration of the Baptism of the Lord, one obvious way to interpret the readings is through the lens of our own baptism. The first reading (another Christmas reading from Isaiah) starts off with water and an invitation to come to the Lord. The second reading, from the First Letter of John, is full of baptismal imagery. And, of course the Gospel, from Mark, the briefest account we have of Jesus’ baptism. So let’s put on our “baptismal glasses,” listen to these readings, and discover what they have to say about our baptism. QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Since First John presents three witnesses—Spirit, water, and blood—what are three specific ways in which I can bear witness this week to my baptism into new life in Christ? TONIGHT!! EUCHRE TOURNAMENT & CHILI SUPPER St. Joachim School, Date: January 10, 2015. Joy of the Gospel (An Apostolic Letter by Pope Francis) Chapter 3 Proclamation of the Gospel Salvation is a gift; we cannot earn it, and it is for everyone. Being Church means that we are God’s leaven in the midst of humanity. It means proclaiming and bringing God’s salvation into our world. The Church must be a place of mercy freely given, where everyone can feel welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel. By reason of our Baptism, we are all called to be evangelizers or missionary disciples. This how one evangelizes; with respect and gentleness. 1) Begin with a personal dialogue 2) Listen. 3) Bring up God’s Word. 4) If appropriate, end with a prayer. However, to be able to communicate the truth, one must Pray, Study, Love, Understand the Meaning of Scripture, and Discover the Message. There is one particular way of listening to what the Lord wishes to tell us in His Word and of letting ourselves be transformed by the Spirit, Lectio Divina, the prayerful reading of Scripture. In the presence of God, it is good to ask, Lord, what does this Scripture text say to me? What is it about my life that you want to change by this text? What troubles me about this text? Why am I not interested in this? Or perhaps: Why do I find pleasant in this text? What is it about this word that moves me? What attracts me? Why does it attract me? When we listen to the Lord, temptations usually arise. We may feel troubled or burdened, and turn away. We may think about what the text means for other people, and so avoid applying it to our own life. We might look for excuses to water down the clear meaning of the text. Or we can wonder if God is demanding too much of us. But, God is patient. He is willing to wait, and invites us to take a step forward, but does not demand a full response until we are ready. And so we are called to be joyful messengers and guardians of goodness and beauty as we accompany each other with love on the journey of life to eternal life. Life in the Spirit Training for Small Group Leaders will be on Sunday, January 11 from 5-7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Life in the Spirit Seminar begins Feb 1 from 5-7 p.m. All are welcome. Invite your friends and members of other parishes. Note: The Life in the Spirit Seminar will replace Bible Study during the Spring of 2015 in the school cafeteria.

th. Each weekly session will be from 5:00-

What is a Life in the Spirit Seminar? A Life in the Spirit seminar is an instrument to stir into flame the gifts that we received at Baptism and Confirmation. The Spirit gives us wisdom, knowledge, and courage to shout from the roof tops that Jesus is Lord, and that “Jesus loves you, and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen and free you.” The Life in the Spirit Seminar begins on February 1 from 5-7 p.m. Training for small group leaders at St. Joachim on January 11 from 5-7 p.m. Snow date is January 18. THANK YOU! Sincere thanks to all those who gave of their time to sing or play at the funerals during Christmas break! Thanks, also, to all those who helped prepare and serve at the Funeral Luncheons! One of the Corporal Works of Mercy is to bury the dead. Thank you all for being a comfort to our grieving families!

“The concerns for non-violence, sustainable development, justice and peace, and care for our environment are of vital importance for humanity. They cannot, however, be understood apart from a profound reflection upon the innate dignity of every human life from conception to natural death: a dignity conferred by God Himself and thus inviolable.” — Pope Benedict XVI, “Welcoming Celebration by the Young People,” July 17, 2008 © 2008 Libreria Editrice Vaticana.
