Year 11 and 12 Exam Timetable

The Term 3 Exam Timetable is now available through Parent Lounge, Student Café,

Music Ministry

Cultural Department

The St Patrick’s and Mercy College Cultural Departments have had a very busy past couple

of weeks. From competing in the 74th Annual Mackay Eisteddfod, to going ‘on tour’ to the

primary schools in the Mackay area. I would like to congratulate the various ensembles

on all their hard work and acknowledge the St Patrick’s College Choir on winning the

Aggregate trophy for the 2021 Choral Eisteddfod. Thank you also to our dedicated

teachers and parents for supporting the students and helping them grow their love of

music.

Next Monday 6 September, we will recognise R U Ok? Day at the College. Thank you to Mrs Danika Hurley (College

Counsellor) for organising our College activities. I encourage everyone to participate in the activities and remember to

always check on your friends.

Rats of Tobruk

The Siege of Tobruk is a key moment in Australian history and it is important to commemorate the lives of the thousands

of Australian soldiers that fought during the siege that began on the 10 April 1941. The siege ended 242 days later in

December 1941.

As a ‘Rats’ College, the St Patrick’s College community remembers and acknowledges those that fought for our country.

Rats of Tobruk – We Salute You. As the next generation, we owe a debt of gratitude to the Rats of Tobruk. Lest we forget.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them.

COVID 19 Procedures

Recently, we have noticed an increase in colds and flu in our community. In line with our college procedures and current

COVID-19 protocols, we remind all parents that it is a legislative requirement that students who are unwell do not attend

school. Under the Public Health Directive, if students are displaying flu like symptoms at school, their parents will be

contacted and must collect them as soon as possible. We thank you for your support and keeping our community safe.

St Patrick’s Community

• Congratulations to the four St Pat’s students who have progressed to the Northern Final of the state-wide cricket

competition to be played this Friday 3 September. If they win, the students will progress to the State final.

Students have been playing in a combined Mercy/St Patrick’s College team. Congratulations to Mackenzie,

Harriet, Meghan and Maison.

• The Rugby League season has finished for our St Pat’s boy’s teams. Both division teams have played well

throughout the season and I would like to congratulate them on the efforts. Thank you also to our coaches,

trainers and parents for your continued support.

• Our St Pat’s Boys Soccer team will play this Thursday at 4:00pm in the Grand Final of the School Soccer

Competition. I would like to invite the St Patrick’s College community to join me in attending this game and

supporting our boys.

• Congratulations to our Girls Rugby League team on another successful season. They recently competed in the

Karyn Murphy Cup in Townsville placing runner up and won the Deanna Turner Cup in Mackay. Thank you again

to our coaches, trainers and parents for supporting our girls.

Ignite Conference is an annual Catholic youth conference held in Brisbane and run by Ignite Youth. It’s a four-day event

featuring real-world formation, encouragement in faith, great people and powerful worship. Unfortunately, last year’s

conference was cancelled due to COVID, however I am excited to let you know that at this stage Ignite Conference is going

ahead this year and there will be a Rockhampton Diocese group travelling down for it. Ignite Conference is taking place

from the 21 to 26 of September. Ignite Conference is open to people of all ages, however only adults and high school

students will be able to travel and stay with the diocesan group. Families are welcome to register and arrange their own

transport and accommodation. To register with this group, you will need to use the following codes:

• For adult participants the code is: ROKAdult

• For high school students, the code is: ROKHigh

Neither of the codes are case sensitive. To register go to https://app.tickets.org.au/iy/IC21BNE. Enter the code in the

coupon code field at the top of the page. Fill out the appropriate registration details which will be Ignite High – Diocese

of Rockhampton Group for high school students, or, Ignite Adults – Diocese of Rockhampton Group for young adult

participants or leaders. Then select the ‘place order’ button at the bottom of the page to complete your order. Because

the group is travelling together, a discounted registration fee has been secured, as well as cheap simple accommodation

(in sleeping bags on floors at a nearby school). When registering the cost will show as $0.00, however once the final

numbers come through, participants will be invoiced up to a maximum of $300 for the whole trip. This is a fantastic

opportunity to meet new friends, find out more about the Catholic faith, and experience church in a completely new way.

Many of the young people who have attended Ignite Conference previously have found it the highlight of their year and

an experience that impacted their life for the better.

Danika Hurley and Susan McKay– College Counsellors

University Early Offer

Twenty one of our Year 12 students have already taken up the early offer for the

course of their choice through various participating universities. To participate in

Early Offer Program, students work with the College on a recommendation of their

choice and list their preferred university as their first preference in QTAC.

They still are required to meet entry requirements and subject prerequisites for their chosen course, with not all courses

being offered in the early round. Early Offer Program benefits for students include: receiving an early offer to allow them

to start making plans for next year straight away, access to support services earlier ensuring they have a seamless

transition to university life, some offering QTAC voucher and reduced anxiety around whether they will be able to get into

the course of their choice.

Griffith University – Experience Days for Year 11 and 12 Students

Interested students from Year 11 and 12 are invited to participate in the Griffith University Experience Days, which gives

students a feel for life at Griffith University and includes campus tours, as well as hands-on interactive sessions dedicated

to different study areas.

Students can race drones, learn about the birth of artificial intelligence, build a trebuchet, deconstruct a film script, use a

news camera and even play computer games developed by Griffith graduates.

To attend, students need to register through the following link - https://www.griffith.edu.au/engage/experience-days.

Students must also select the interactive sessions they wish to attend as places are limited.

Science Week

The students and teachers of St Patrick’s College celebrated National Science Week from 16 August until

20 August 21. The UQ Science Ambassadors, with some help from the Science teachers, prepared the

series of interesting activities for each day of the week, as well as some interesting FUN FACTS about

food for the Morning Notices.

The theme of the week was Food: Different by Design. It honoured the United Nations International Year of Fruits and

Vegetables and the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development.

On Monday 16 August, students took part in a paper plane competition for the farthest flying plane. The students learnt

that making an aerodynamic plane using a A4 sheet of paper, is a real art and challenge.

On Tuesday 17 August, a large number of students took part in a kahoot based on the theme of Food Science.

On Wednesday Mr Desmond Searle, the Senior Mechanical Engineer and Engineering Manager from Field Engineers,

visited the College. He brought two young designers, Rachel Tracey and Cesare Stimamiglio, who shared their experiences

and answered several questions related to their career pathways. The students gained an invaluable insight into the field

of mechanical design and engineering.

During the College assembly on Wednesday, two Science Ambassadors, Immogen Martin and Alex Strang, announced the

winners of Science Progressive Competitions in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which took place over several weeks in

Term 2. The winning teams were awarded their prizes and were presented with them by the Science Coordinator, Ms

Cook.

On Thursday, lovers of Biology and Australian native animals had the opportunity to listen to two carers from the

Australian Wildlife Services, Mrs Yvette Jeffs and Mrs Tina Howarth. They brought one baby possum, a little wallaby and

a baby kangaroo into the College. The students who attended the session found out how much time and effort is required

to look after orphaned and injured native animals. They had an opportunity to interact with the animals, following the

instructions from the guest speakers.

On Friday, the Chemistry teachers, Mrs Angela Brazil and Mr Thomas Laflamme, performed some spectacular experiments

with liquid nitrogen. Students witnessed glass breaking due to a sudden temperature change, a banana and a rubber ball

being frozen almost instantaneously and other fantastic effects.

The Science Week activities and student’s participation, proved that science still amazes and entertains.

Marcus McConnell – Cultural Coordinator

Last week, the St Patrick’s and Mercy College students in the Cultural Departments visited the local

Catholic Primary Schools to showcase performances from their various ensembles. This included the

Combined Stage Band, St Pat’s Percussion Ensemble, Mercy Drum Corps and our Combined

Cheer/Dance Squad. The audience were presented with some solo routines from Shontae and Jessica,

as well as a solo-off between members of our Stage Band. The primary students were very enthusiastic

and enjoyed having the students visit them.

St Pat’s Writes

I would like to thank the students of St Patrick’s for their support of St Pat’s Writes, 2021. The

competition is a celebration of the wealth of creativity that we have and was a great success. Once

again, it was a privilege to judge the responses across the categories of short story, poetry and meme.

2021 Winners Short Story: Primrose Sands Runner’s up Benjamin Van Gestel Poetry: Kennedy Foley and Kodi Ryke Meme: Cooper Philps Best Dressed Character: Blake Ferris, Chelsea Moohin, Paris Santacaterina To celebrate Book Week and St Patrick’s Writes, Friday saw our students dress up as their favourite characters from literature or film. Thank you to all of the staff and students who displayed a wonderful sense of imagination. A great deal of time and effort went into the costumes that were on display. We look forward to doing it all again next year. Keep writing St Pat’s.

Simon Korneliussen – Vocational and Educational Training Coordinator Work Experience The following dates have been set out for Work Placement for the Vocational Education & Training Students for the end of this year. Year 11 & 12 13 – 17 September

• Applications for this block are due back at the office by Friday 1 September.

• If extra time is needed please contact Leighanne Preston (V.E.T. Assistant).

• This is an exam block week. If students have an exam during this time, they must ensure they are at the College on

time and in uniform to complete it. Please organise this with employers.

• As this placement is in Week 2 and 3 of Term 4, placements should be organised by the end of Term 3.

Please collect your work experience applications from the College office. Applications must be returned at least two (2) weeks prior to placement. Short Course Opportunities in Term 4 2021 St Patrick’s College would like to provide our Year 12 Vocational Education and Training students with the opportunity to attain some extra employability skills prior to graduation. A number of short courses are being offered through three outside providers, Blueprint Career Development, Civil Safety and Training and Sharp 5 Industry Training. They will be run during the first three weeks of Term 4. The Civil Safety course will also be run after students graduate in December and early January for those interested in pursuing a career in the mining industry. Before the courses can be run, we will need to ascertain if there is sufficient student interest. An ‘Expressions of Interest’ form has been attached which lists the courses and the cost of each course. The students can choose to enrol in a number of these courses or just one. Participation is not compulsory and payment will not occur through the College but through the training provider.

The ‘Expressions of Interest’ form (a copy is attached at the end of this newsletter or can be downloaded from the College App) will need to be returned to the College by Friday, 3 September. Once numbers for each course has been established, a timetable will be provided.

Shelby Barbe – Japanese Teacher

Japanese Calligraphy Contest

Students were given the opportunity to participate in the 2021 Calligraphy Contest held by the Mackay

Regional Language Network this past week. The Calligraphy Contest requires students to demonstrate

their Japanese writing skills to our region’s language teachers without any tracing, erasing, or double

lined letters.

All of our Year 11 and 12 students were encouraged to participate, which is a great cultural experience-based

opportunity! Once again this year, we took home all of the places for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Highly Commended for the Year 11

and 12 division! Our college participated against a range of other schools in the region, but through practice and

commitment we were lucky enough to come out on top!
