HelloMy name is Jamie Oxtoby, I’m 24 and from a small town in Yorkshire, England. I came to Australia in May 2014 to travel the country and work as a Graphic Designer in Melbourne.

I graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London in 2012 in BA Design, having been awarded the Second Class - Upper Division mark after the three year course. I was then able to go straight into full time employment in the design industry as a Design Assistant at Kingstown Associates. This is a company that covers seven different catalogues, for a mail order service to over 2 million subscribed customers.

During my time at university I took part in a number of work experience jobs in some large design agencies in London, and I am also a freelance logo designer in my spare time.

Final Year Studio ProjectTrafferball - Can A Sport Be Extracted From Rioting? This was a self-proposed brief about extracting a sport from rioting and social unrest, that transmits the cultural values of our society in the early 21st century.

I have done this by designing the sport of ‘Trafferball’, as well as a fi ctional timeline to the year 2100, highlighting its developments as a social activity and a cultural reference of the present day. I want the sport to ignite discussion about how and why these riots took place, as well as perhaps being the next stage in popular sporting activity, undertaken by general sports enthusiasts.

I want this sport to be a social re-enactment of the communities, however large or small, that were affected by the riots and surrounding protests. This can then develop into a social event itself, highlighting the behaviours and opinions of our current society and thus become a means to commentate or our present culture.

Studio Practice BriefsThe briefs I was given during my 3-year course allowed for a lot of fl exibility in the design process as well as the outcome. This was a multi-displinary degree so any form of design could be used to answer the brief.

About Me...As a Brit, living in Melbourne, you have probably guessed that visiting new places is one of my main interests outside of design.

Before I arrived in Australia, I visited Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. These countries hold some great experiences, from watching the sunrise at Siem Reap Temples, to abseiling a 30 metre waterfall. But the memories that will really stay with me are my interactions with the people of these countries and their way of life. It ignited new perspectives to look at the world we live in day to day.

During my time in Australia I have worked on a small farm in New South Wales - tending to farm animals and maintaining the property; I pruned apple trees in Batlow, NSW and picked strawberries in Queensland. Some of this work I did to work towards my 2nd Year Visa, but mostly because I like to throw myself into new experiences and get a taste of real country life. I will certainly look to do more voluntary work in the future.

In the summer of 2012, I was lucky enough to be selected out of 250,000 applicants to be one of the London Olympic Games’ 70,000 volunteers. This role included working on the main entrance of the Olympic Park as well as Wembley Soccer Stadium, welcoming people to the event, explaining the security procedures for entry and loading bags for x-ray.

This was a fantastic, once in a lifetime experience. I met new and exciting people everyday both on the workforce and those coming to the park, and to be part of what was a great summer for Britain made me very proud.

Sport holds a large importance in my life. I was captain of Goldsmiths soccer team for two years whilst at university, in which we reached promotion in my 1st year. This has developed my leadership, teamwork and communication skills, which are all transferable into the design environment. I expect my team to work hard, raise the bar and enjoy the work, whatever the situation. I like to keep fi t when I have time, and I visit the gym or do yoga three or four times a week.

I am also a qualifi ed soccer coach with a level-1 FA qualifi cation, and I was a Steward at Lords Cricket Ground during my time in London. I have also taken a course in archery and have completed a tandem skydive for charity, both of which are skills I wish to progress in the future.

Resonance Stone is a company set up to represent life coaches that use a 4 step plan to help customers ‘facilitate change from within’. I was asked to produce a diagram that would help to explain the four elements, so that the image could be used as a navigation tool to other pages of the website.

I decided to use the company logo as a basis for the diagram as the elements within it lend themselves to be used in this type of design.

Photo RestorationThese are a few examples of restorations I have done for friends and family. It is mostly through self-taught skills that I am able to bring these old photos back to life and I love seeing the reaction of people when they receive them back.

Work ExperienceDesign Against CrimeLondon, EnglandApr 2O11 - Sep 2O11Part of the Innovation Centre at Central St Martins University (CSM), in the centre of London, Design Against Crime (DAC) is a practice-led research centre which aims to design objects, services and environments that address both the users and abusers. It links criminology to design problem setting and solving for practical social contexts.

The centre’s focus is based on the understanding that design thinking as well as design practice can and should address security issues without compromising functionality and other aspects of performance, or aesthetics.

DAC worked with CSM Product Design students to create an exhibition to show their projects on ATM crime, as well as DACs research fi ndings on ATM crime modus operandi.

My role included designing the layout of the exhibition, designing board layouts, contacting suppliers for equipment and installing the show.

I also created a stop motion fi lm that showed the M.O’s of ATM crime

The exhibition was so successful that we were asked to create a space in Covent Garden, London as part of National Crime Prevention Week.

This meant I had to re-confi gure the layout so that the important elements of the exhibition were included in the smaller space as well as considering the restrictions put on a public space.

‘Grippa Clips’ and ‘Stop Thief Chairs’ were designed by DAC to reduce the number of bag thefts in bars and cafes.

I designed the site map for Starbucks in Victoria station - a particular hotspot for bag theft, as well as a questionnaire that was used to observe and record users of the products to measure their effi ciency.

These results were later correlated with the police records since the clips were installed, to realise any measurable outcomes such as behavioural change or crime rates.

Kin DesignLondon, EnglandJan 2O11 - Feb 2O11I was chosen as part of a group of 4 to collaborate with Kin, an interaction design and research company, and The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London.

The project was to design a temporary and travelling exhibition for primary school children that explains the importance of using longitude in naval navigation.

Screen Printing/ Mixed Media ArtThroughout my school years and then later in my spare time, I have had a great in interest in art and painting, perhaps on an equal level to graphic design.

I received an A grade at A-level Art in England, and then went on to an Art and Design Foundation Diploma, at Hull College, where I achieved a Distinction - the highest grade available.

I moved into a career in graphic design but I still use my art skills in my work when I can.

Two of my favourite ways to produce my work are in oil paints and water colours. These pieces are a mixture of school work, commissioned pieces and paintings I have done for my own enjoyment.
