About The DancerShridevi epitomizes the elegance and style that are the result of blending modern sensibilities with the ancient ethos of eastern India and Natyashastra (an ancient scripture of dance and drama) to create the highly lyrical dance art of Odissi, and uses it to voice for humanitarian as well as environmental causes.Shridevi was involved in music and dance from a very young age of seven. With every opportunity to learn the arts, she got trained in Kuchipudi by Shanta Rai Mishra and in Kathak by Pt. Krishna Kumar Sharma. She performed these dance styles to acclaim. Later she turned to Odissi which she adopted as her preferred medium. Her introduction to Odissi took place under Guru Somali Sharma under guid-ance of Padamshree Madhavi Mudgal who trained her in the fundamentals. Later she came under the tutelage of the renowned Guru Mayadhar Raut and her daughter Madhumita Raut for a short time. She continues to pursue and propagate as well as amalgamate this art-form to create her unique style of Indian Performing arts. She has served full term as Dance Teacher in International Sahaja

Public School in the year 2008 and visits the school eve-ry year for a month to conduct workshops.Shridevi’s command over the Abhinaya or the expres-sional aspect is striking. Her elegant postures and rhyth-mic footwork combine in an appealing flow of sculp-turesque movements. Her subtle musical knowledge and

aesthetic sense add to the highly distinctive character of her recitals.

Through teaching, performing and conducting workshops Shridevi has been actively involved in propagating humani-

tarian issues and causes through the art of Classical & Contem-porary dance in New Delhi and other parts of India. She has trained a number of students who have performed with her in the classical

ballets. In the year 2000 at a young age of 18 she organized a seminar and festival - “Love for the Creation” a first of its kind in New Delhi when stu-dents, scholars of botany and environment and dancers met to think about the

future trends of the environment and earth. She has also worked with Slum Children Education for Rotary and has performed for the club to raise funds

for educating girl child. She has also contributed to an NGO for girl child in Greater Noida by teaching dance and spending time with the orphan

girls for some years.

Odissi DanceIn India the art of Dance is a result of thousands of years of refinement and countless cycles of artists and Gurus. Odissi invokes the grace of Lord Jagannatha, the Lord of the Universe and another attribute to Shri Vishnu. Odissi dance like other Indian classical dance forms has two major facets: Nritta or non-representational dance, in which ornamental patterns are created using body movements in space and time; and Abhinaya, or stylized mime in which symbolic hand gestures a n d facial expressions are used to interpret a story or theme.

The technique of Kuchipudi makes use of fast rhythmic footwork and sculpturesque body movements. Stylized mime, hand gestures and subtle facial expressions, are combined with more realistic acting, occasionally including dialogues spoken by the dancers. Historically it was performed as a dance drama, with several dancers taking different roles. The themes are mostly derived from the scriptures and mythology, and the portrayal of certain characters is a central motif of this dance form.

The technique of Kathak today is characterized by fast rhythmic footwork set to complex time cycles. The footwork is matched by the accompanying percussion instruments such as tabla and pakhawaj, and the dancer and percussionists often indulge in a virtuoso display of rhythmic wizardry. The dance movements include numerous pirouettes executed at lightning speed and ending in statuesque poses.
