Hosted by Steve & Kathleen Martin

RESERVATION DEADLINE IS SEPT. 7

Take a drive through the forests of the magnificent Santa Cruz Mountains! Begin in Los Gatos with a stop at the

historic Testarossa Vineyards for a free wine tasting. Then drive California Highway 9, from its beginning in Los Gatos, through the mountains and redwood groves to the end at its intersection with fabled Highway 1 in Santa Cruz. Then pro-ceed down Hwy. 1 to nearby Soquel, and our picnic stop at the award-winning Hunter Hill Vineyard and Winery. That’s about a two-hour drive. The Candy Store in Burlingame will be opening its doors to welcome all JAG members and their guests for a tour

and dinner on Saturday, September 12, starting at 4:30 pm.

The Candy Store, a private car-collectors haven, is located in a beautifully restored classic automobile dealership dating to the 1920s. The club features the unique Hageman-Jaguar race car, several XKs and E-Types, and an SS 100. The current dis-play also includes Nicki Lauda’s 1977 Grand Prix championship winning Ferrari 312, and a number of special, custom-built His-pano Suizas, Mercedes, Jaguars, Ferraris, and Bugattis. You will even see a unique Edwards—built right in South San Francisco.

The tour will include a special dinner, provided by the highly regarded Danish French Caterer. Refreshments will be served, but please bring your own wine and beer.

The entry fee is $45.00 per person, which includes dinner.

Directions to the Candy Store will be provided to those mak-ing reservations to attend. Reservation Form is on page 5.

If you missed the drive to Tahoe. You missed a Great Trip. It is truly Awe-

some driving along the Feather River. Several times I was tempted to stop the car and go wading.

Roger Colton did his normal Great job in mapping the trip. We topped it off by going to the Klabunde's for Dinner. What a treat!! They rolled out their very best Southern Hospitality for the group. Everyone left with a Full Stomach and a smile on their face.

We did some test on using a CB to chit chat as we drove to Tahoe. It was successful enough that I want to encourage everyone to bring one for the next driving events. Instead of a line of Jaguars driving up the road, there was a line of friends driving Jaguars up the road. A Very Impressive Sight!

As I noted in an e-mail message to you, Cis Stein, Lew Ed-wards, Dudley Smolen, Dick France, Andre Mantha, Peter Ed-monds and I spent 6 hours at a board meeting going over the Bylaw changes that Peter and his committee presented to us. The board accepted most of the changes major and minor so they now can be submitted to the membership for their ap-proval. There were a couple sent back for some re-work of the wording. We will get those proposal in this year if possible.

We also discussed how cost are going up on many of our items (Jag Gazette, etc.) and that we were no longer taking in enough funds to support them at current professional level.

The board decided to forego a dues increase for 2010, but we do expect to have to request one for 2011.

Until next month !!

Looking forward to seeing you on the road.

President’s Message – Howard Smith / Board Meeting

The August Board meeting with seven members in attendance was held on August 18 at President Smith's home in San Jose.

The President is currently working on appointing a Nominating Committee to select Board candidates for election in November and to take office in 2010. Offices to which candidates will be elected this year are President, First Vice-President, Secretary and one Director-at-Large. Incumbents whose terms are expiring are respectively Howard Smith, Narcissa Stein, Peter Edmonds, and Dudley Smolen.

The Board took up the report of the Bylaws Committee (Peter Edmonds, Jerry Nuijen, Sally Anderson and Steve Martin, advised by Jackie Rusch), which comprised 15 specific recommendations for amendment of the existing Bylaws and a 'consent agenda' comprising numerous minor editing changes to achieve consistent style and clarify some ambiguities, plus five substantive amendments already approved by the Board at its June meeting. Two of the recommendations were tabled for lack of requested information from JCNA and two were referred back to the Committee for revision and re-submission to the Board. All others were approved by the Board, including two that were slightly revised before their votes. Proposed and Board-approved amendments in final form will be published in the October issue of JAGazette to enable balloting by all Club Members in November.

Treasurer Mantha presented a report in the form of an updated Profit & Loss statement and estimate for the calendar year 2009, projecting a net operating loss of about $5,100 for the year. He also reported the club's current checking account balance as $6,590, including $5,000 drawn from the reserve account at the end of 2008. The Treasurer's intent is to draw down the reserve account further to cover the projected net operating loss for 2009.

The Board reiterated divided opinions on the issue of setting membership dues for 2010 and deferred a decision again until the next meeting. Options for the design of label badges for members' use were discussed again. The Board decided to modify the design of engraved members' lapel badges submitted by the Membership chair, who was asked to provide a modified sample for approval at the next meeting.

Proposals for social and driving events in the first half of 2010 were discussed and preliminary assignments and scheduling were agreed. Details will be published as usual on the JAG website and in the calendars and pages of JAGazette. The President's Rally on October 10 will begin in Livermore, visit the Lick Observatory, and terminate in Willow Glen for a cookout at Howard Smith's home. (continued on page 4)

Pro-Choice was the word. Two convoys were available for traveling to Carmel from the valley. One started from

the Miramar Beach Restaurant on the coast and the other started from the Summit Road House. Seeing as how the Summit Road House is only a couple of miles from our home that was our choice.

The departure time from the Road House was around 2:00 p.m. to arrive at Carmel around 3:00 p.m. and that way have time to rest up before the cocktail party. So most of us arrived at the Summit Road House in time to have a leisurely lunch, before hitting the road. The weather was ideal for sitting on the patio while eating and enjoying the spectacular view out over the valley. There is recent new management at the Road House and the food and service were very good. At departure time 5 or 6 Jaguars lined up for a nice convoy, but to pull out on Highway 17 was dicey, so the neat convoy was assimilated individually into the crowd.

The drive down the coast is always beautiful and this trip was no exception — with perfect weather. By the time we ar-rived at Carmel we were all a little scattered. Fortunately for us we ended up following Lew and Faye Edwards. As we went up and down the hills on the narrow streets with lots of stop signs I wasn’t at all sure that I had made the best decision. However all of a sudden Lew turned right and “wala” - there was the Carmel Bay View Inn.

Timing was perfect. Along about 5:30 or 6:00 p.m. Bernie and Sis Stein welcomed the thirsty crowd into their room. Not only was the thirst catered to with beer and wine etc, but the tables contained lots of great snacks. It is amazing how many Jag enthusist can sit on one bed with snacks in one hand and some wine balanced in the other - and consume them both. Seems that is a good classroom exercise for slalom competi-tion.

Another exercise for the mind was ascertaining who was Mike Bramlett. The rumor circulated that Mike had made res-ervations for us all at the Forge in the Forest Restaurant — which was very conveniently just across the street from the Inn — for dinner at 7:00 p.m. and to be seated on the delight-ful patio. Still don’t know if Mike’s identity was ever exposed, but the reservation was good and the seating was great. This restaurant has fantastic desserts and the one they are famous for is their humongous chocolate chip cookies with great top-pings. I finally witnessed the execution of that common advice for senior people — “Order dessert first” Although not all that old, Josie Garrett did just that and ordered one of the famous chocolate chip cookies and it arrived shortly to the dismay of the onlookers. It was about ¾ “thick and arrived in about an 8” diameter frying pan and it was still hot from the oven. It was topped with all sorts of goodies the last of which was a moun-tain of whipped cream. Although she had lots of volunteers to assist her with disposing of it, she was busy with it for a long time.

Breakfast was included with the room so there was a stream of JAG members from (maybe 6:30 a.m.) to almost 10:30 a.m. when we arrived. It was a good breakfast with lots of variety and a very pleasant breakfast room.

After all the foregoing we finally made it to Ocean Ave-nue and started looking at the cars which ostensibly was the purpose of our trip. The Jaguars were pretty well represented. There were a couple of XK 120s the most impressive being a 1949, an early aluminum bodied, the 25th XK120 built by Jag-uar. The restoration was perfect having just been completed by Mike Wilson. Mike is a very active restorer and has been the driving force in the Visalia JCNA “Good Times Jaguar Club” for a number of years. Completing the early Jaguars there was a XK 140 OTS owned by Geoffrey Horton of Sonora and a recently restored XK 150 owned by Steve Kirby of Irvine. The last Jaguar was a 1962 XKE FHC owned by Ray Stewart.

A couple of other very impressive sports cars were a 1961 Maserati 3500 GT and 1966 Bezzarrini GT Strada. There were numerous other interesting cars and a few that caught my par-ticular attention were a 1951 Muntz Jet Convertible, this was (continued on page 8)

about the time the 25” Muntz TVs were extremely popular. Playing on the popu-larity of the time, there was 1965 Ford 150 Hackney “Good Humor” Ice Cream truck complete with a white coated and a white hat attendant. Another eye catch-er, this time a black shiny beauty, was a 1960 Chrysler 300F Convertible which is one of only 248 built. When Chrys-ler introduced the 300F it was one fast machine and as a result that year Chrys-ler 300Fs took the first six places in the flying mile competition in Daytona, at nearly 145 mph.

That evening we all went over to the “Sardine Factory Restaurant” on Can-nery Row in Monterey and with a nice dinner hashed over the last two days activities with a resounding “Lets do it again next year”.

In summary this was all a plus affair. First off it gave us a chance to show off our Jaguars to a welcoming audience, a

chance to meet and talk with fellow car lovers and to top it off, Intel gave a very nice participants plaque and a free lunch to each participant.

JAG member Tom Oda, who works at Intel, invited all JAG members to participate and quite a number responded. After all where else is the entry fee zero plus lunch being provided? Speaking of lunch it was very good: a choice of hamburger, cheeseburger, chicken or veggie sandwich plus a choice of chips and a cold drink with a big round chocolate or plain chocolate chip cookie. Once this was digested the Hagen-Das Ice Cream cart showed up with a bowl of ice cream for everyone. The fol-lowing is a list of those astute JAG members that took advantage of the situation.

In addition to the foregoing Intel employee, Mike DeBacker, joined the Jaguar line up with a beautiful XK 120 roadster. An-other nice addition was seeing Jim Taylor, whom I haven’t seen since he joined our JAG caravan to Grand Junction Colorado last year. Another JAG member participant was Bob Jacob-son displaying a breath taking 1934 Peirce Arrow Convertible Coupe.

Quoting Tom Oda, “The coordinator said there were 60+ cars and I was amazed at the variety. Definitely the best turn out over past years. I talked to Jack Castor about his Ferrari. Interesting story. He bought it in 1969 for $3000 and went to Modena with the intent to buy a Mercedes Gullwing that was for sale. When he arrived, it was sold so he bought the Fer-rari instead. It was off the road for many years until recently when he got it running. It was nice that he had such a great “back up” when his D-type replica didn't start this morning.”

The Arcane Auto Society’s contribution included a couple of very small vehicles one of which was a two passenger with tandem seating - it looked odd. In the three wheeled category was a 1934 Morgan and a couple of 1980s Trihawks. Some of my always favorites were also on display: a 1937 Cord Con-vertible Sedan - just plain beautiful; a 1960 Chrysler Crown Imperial Convertible - just one mass of chrome; a 1956 and also a 1972 Citroen - long and low with its hydraulic/pneu-matic suspension.

Thanks Tom for inviting us and I do hope this is an an-nual affair.

Monterey Historic Races

at Laguna Seca RacewayBy Dick France

It is always a “crap shoot” as to what the weather is go-ing to be at Laguna Seca — shorts and sun screen or long

pants and a jacket. But no matter what, it is always a fun day. I chose the shorts and until about 11:30 a.m. I was cold. Be-ing as how I needed to transport the hospitality tent and the coolers and flag and so forth the XJ8 was the elected mode of transportation. Once some years back I had to haul all that paraphernalia with the XKE 2+2 and quite a sight it was with the old bulky hospitality tent riding on a roof rack along with a couple of chairs and stuff crammed in every where. Some-how that V-12 lost a bit of its sporty look.

This year once again the Morgan Club joined us in the cor-ral. It is a very mutually satisfactory arrangement. Neither club membership purchases enough tickets to warrant the track as-signing a corral; however together we qualify and both clubs enjoy the corral. This arrangement is thanks to JAG member Audrey Haines and she always gets the Morgan Club mem-bers enthused and purchasing tickets. However this year our special thanks go to JAG member Trent Moseley whose pur-chase of ten tickets got us just over the minimum for getting a corral assignment.

Our assigned corral was on the asphalt field between turns #2 and #5 — a very nice location. Another special thanks goes to Linda Cannon, from San Luis Obispo, for arriving real ear-ly and setting up the corral boundaries and, with the help of James Davis and Kathy Holman from Agoura Hills, assuring that only authorized automobiles parked in the corral. I ar-rived about 9:00 a.m. and all was well in control including a spot for the hospitality tent and for my car to park on the flag pole stand — to assure the wind did not blow it over. To pro-tect the tent against the wind we duct taped the handle of the coolers to the tent legs — works great. While relaxing in the

tent Roger Colton and his son Adam stopped by for a nice chat.

Laguna Seca is great in that the 30 acre paddock area is open to all attendees. You can get up close to all the cars and drivers. A walk through the paddock made it clear that the Porsche community responded well to being the featured marque. One participant, Rusty French, shipped his two 935 Porsches from his home in Victoria Australia for these historic races. Of the 450 entrants, one third were Porsches. I am no Porsche lover, but they did put on some very enjoyable races.

There were three Jaguars together in the pits, two “C” types plus a “D” type that had originally been converted to an XKSS by the addition of a full width windscreen, dual doors, bumperettes and a soft top. However the most interesting car I found in the paddock was a “C” type Jaguar and what in-trigued me more was that the mechanic was working on the front brakes. My XK120 was at home up on the lift with a front brake problem so we swapped info — or rather I had ques-tions and he had answers. It was Steve Earle’s “C” type which he has owned for 25 years and which he had out on the track during the day.

Steve Earle is the owner of General Racing which orga-nized and has produced the Rolex Monterey Historic Races for 36 years. However due to not being able to reach a financial agreement with the Sports Car Racing Association of Mon-terey Peninsula (SCRAMP), General Racing will no longer be involved in the historic races at Laguna Seca. Honoring his many contributions, Rolex presented Steve with a Rolex Per-petual Milgauss Watch.

The Monterey Cup and a Rolex Steel & Gold Daytona Cos-mograph were presented to the automobile judged to have ex-celled overall in presentation and performance. That winner was Richard Clark, an Englishman who lives in Monte Carlo.

The races were great, all the way from the brass era Fords and others to the overpowered Mustangs and Corvettes. The event even had Sir Stirling Moss in the races with his black Lola Mk. 1. What more could one ask for in one day at the track. I assume next year will be even better.

held in Alameda on October 10th, 2009. This event is open to all Jag Club Members and friends and all years and models are welcome. The JAG Club has been allocated 30 spaces and its own street, Alameda Avenue, to display this great marque. October 11 — Concours and Picnic at Ledgewood Winery

On Oct 11 the Sacramento club is holding a JCNA sanc-tioned concours in conjunction with a family get together and picnic at Ledgewood Winery in Suisun Valley, near Fairfield. Ledgewood has good wine at reasonable prices, a big, open field with lots of parking and plenty of picnic tables. The win-ery is conveniently located about 2 miles north of Interstate 80 at 4589 Abernathy Rd. 707-426-4424. Bring a picnic basket and a sun umbrella if you have one, or you can obtain food lo-cally within a mile of the winery.

The Sacramento club would like our help with the judging and score tabulation and, of course, our participation. This is your chance to enter a JCNA concours close to home with a very good chance of walking away with a 1st or 2nd place.

Please contact Jerry Nuijen if you can judge or help with the organization of the event. We will have a judges’ training

session if your certification has lapsed or you would like to become certified. You do not have to be certified to judge. You can just be a judging team member. It’s a great way to learn about what makes a Jaguar a winner and can teach you a lot of things about your own car. Fill out the signup sheet com-pletely. I will contact you about the particulars.

For more information contact Jerry Nuijen at [email protected] or at 415-388-2363. See page

Directions: Take Interstate 80 to Fairfield. Take the Abernathy Rd

exit from either direction and turn north. If you are coming from

the San Francisco area this means turn left over the freeway. If you

are coming from the Sacramento area exit at the RioVista exit. The

sign will say Abernathy Rd as you exit. In spite of the arrow to the

left, turn right. In about 3/10 of a mile you will come to a traffic

circle. Proceed straight ahead for about 1.4 miles and you will see

Ledgewood on your left.

DEADLINE FOR SIGNUP is Oct 5.

BURMA SHAVE Signs

Here is a quick lesson in our history of the 1930s and 1940s. Before the Interstates, when everyone drove the old 2-lane roads, BURMA SHAVE signs would be posted all over the countryside in farmers fields. They were small red signs with

white letters. Five signs, about 100 feet apart, each containing 1 line of a 4 line couplet and the obligatory 5th sign advertis-ing BURMA SHAVE, a popular shaving cream.

32nd year in the San Francisco Bay Area.....

THE BRISBANE MARINA All BRITISH CAR DAY

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 And now for something completely different.....

Join your British car friends, once again, for a smashing day at the Brisbane Marina. Over 200 quirky, classic, and lov-able British cars will once again gather in the Bay Area for our 32nd Annual British Car Meet. We have been doing this on the same weekend for over 30 years and just because the times, they are a-changin,’ we’ll be a-changin’ with the times.

After careful consideration of the present economy, fad-ing sponsorship, and smaller attendance, combined with the decentralization of the hobby in general and a number of new competing Northern California events, we have decided to try something that is quite like the first British Car Meet held in Palo Alto in 1978.

A one day FREE event ..........That’s right, FREE Sunday • Parking Lot Show & Tell:

This will be a simple, no fees, no frills, no awards gathering of British and Arcane car enthusiasts. We have made arrange-ments with the good folks at the Sierra Point Yacht Club to set up in the parking lots around the club. As last year, the Yacht Club will be offering an optional Sunday brunch and coffee. It all starts Sunday morning at 8:30AM.

Saturday Bay to Breakers Tour to Cameron’s PubThese tours take you over some of the most beautiful roads

in Northern California. There will be two optional routes; one direct yet still quite scenic, and another with a backroad com-ponent. We will be starting tour cars from a staging area by the entrance. Cars will leave in small groups between about 8:30 and 10:00AM – The shorter route should take less than an hour and the back roads route will take a bit more than an hour... Cars should start gathering at Cameron's at about 10:00AM, a combination of early tour drivers and people who live near the coast. (see page 19 for directions)

Directions to the Brisbane Marina:The Brisbane Marina is located on Sierra Point, just east of

the Bayshore Freeway (101) in Brisbane, between San Fran-cisco and the SF Airport/Highway 380. Just take the Brisbane/Sierra Point Exit and follow the signs to the Marina.

Cameron's Pub is located at 1410 S. Cabrillo Hwy in Half Moon Bay. It is just south of downtown on the west side of the coast highway.

ATTENTION ALL MEMBERSE-Mail Address Updates

Circumstances arise periodically when it is desirable to get information out to the members in a quicker fashion than provided by the next Jagazette. It is also often advan-tageous for the members to be reminded close to the date when particularly interesting events are to occur. This can be done very quickly and efficiently with the use of e-mails.

However experience has shown that a lot of the mem-ber’s e-mail addresses have changed since the last roster was printed.

So if your e-mail address has changed since the last ros-ter was issued, and you didn’t correct it in the 2009 renewal information you submitted, it would be appreciated if you would e-mail the correct e-mail address to Fran Thomson at [email protected].

Page 20 Ironstone Concours/ Niello Concours

Ironstone Concours Saturday, September 26

Murphys, California

This year (2009), we will feature classes for Hudson (including Es-sex and Terraplane), Rolls-

Royce and Bentley automobiles, plus a special class for cars from the former Harrah’s Automobile Collection. This will be in ad-dition to our usual displays of vintage trailers, motorcycles and wooden boats.

As in recent years, our judging process will be as follows: Rather than awarding first, second and third prizes in each class, our judges will be asked to designate a percentage of the cars in each class to receive a ribbon indicating an "Award of Merit." From that group, judges will choose one vehicle desig-nated "Best of Class."

As has been our custom, in addition to our usual overall awards and several new awards, "Best of Class" vehicles will parade over the stage. We feel this change is consistent with our determination to keep Ironstone a fun, relaxing and el-egant event...more reminiscent of the Concours d'Elegance of the 1930s, where each car was judged on its overall elegance and style rather than for its minutely detailed physical perfec-tion.

Tickets are $25 per adult and $35 per family with children under 14 admitted free. Tickets will be available at the gate, day of event, cash or check.

Additional info may be obtained by going to www.iron-stonefoundation.org.

Niello Concours d’EleganceAt Serrano, Eldorado Hills

Sunday - October 4Spectator Tickets are $35 in advance

and $45 at the gate

The El Dorado Hills location is near Sacramento and the Serrano area incorporates rolling hills and beauti-

ful homes. The Concours is held near the visitor’s center at Serrano with all grass for parking and an attractive lake and fountain as backdrop for all the activities.

The Concours this year will be a Fiesta D’Italia celebrating all Italian Marques. In addition a complete array of other exot-ic and not so exotic marques will be on display. The Concours is sanctioned and judged by the SCCA.

In addition to the Concours on Sunday there will also be an Ultimate Driving Tour on Saturday. The driving tour will not only cover the surrounding Sierra Foothills, but also in-clude the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The $150 per person entry fee includes a gift basket, breakfast and Wine tasting at the David Girard Winery and lunch at the Bella Piazza Win-ery plus an Official Tour Jacket, Cap and Rosette.

Late registration fee, if space is available is $100 per car. The entry fee includes 2 concours tickets, a Program, Conti-nental breakfast on Sunday plus 2 Niello Concours at Serrano Signature chairs.
