El-Sayed is a long-time member of the Society and previously served in numerous volunteer positions. ASEE Executive Director Norman Fortenberry notes, “Jackie is a nationally recognized leader in higher education with distinguished service at multiple levels, including experience as a senior administrator. She has a clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities in engineering education. She is going to help guide ASEE Headquarters in remaining essential to our members and in maintaining our status as a leader in our community. We’re lucky to have her on staff.” El-Sayed has leadership experience with the entire pipeline of engineering education and most recently served as the Chief Academic Officer & Vice President for Academic Affairs at Marygrove College. She is a professor emerita of mechanical engineering and served on the faculty at Kettering University for 18 years, eventually earning the position of Associate Provost. On her new appointment, she says, “It is such an honor to join the ASEE Senior Management Team as Chief Academic Officer to collaborate with the remarkable ASEE staff. I’m thrilled to work on engineering education at a national level, across the entire span of educators who teach future engineering professionals.” El-Sayed credits her exposure to Harvey Mudd College President Maria Klawe with guiding her career and serving as a valuable mentor. About El-Sayed, Klawe says, “Jackie is the perfect person for this role. She brings deep knowledge and experience with innovation in engineering education, as well as academic leadership. She will be a fantastic addition to ASEE.” In addition to her work in academia she has served in industry and government. She is a four-time gubernatorial appointee to the Michigan Truck Safety Commission and, as commissioner, served as chair for two terms. She also chaired the Driver's Education Advisory Committee and the Motorcycle Safety Advisory Committee for the Michigan Department of State—work that resulted in new legislation for Michigan. She began her career as an engineer for General Motors Truck Group and has been nationally recognized in higher education as both an American Council on Education Fellow and a New Leadership Academy Fellow. Currently El-Sayed serves on the Bloomfield Hills Board of Education, serves as a director on the BHS Foundation Board and serves on the Advancement Committee for the Society for College and University Planning. She is married and has three adult children.
