Every time we gather for the Eucharist, we offer simple gifts of bread and wine that become Christ’s Body and Blood for all to share. These basic staples of food and drink that we bring to the table at Mass become the flesh and blood of our Savior. His body and Blood nourish us as we carry out His mission. We approach the table of the Lord in joy and gratitude for God’s abiding presence in this sacred meal.

In today’s reading, both Moses and Jesus use the words “blood of the covenant” to describe their offering. For Moses, the blood from their animals seals the covenant God has made with His chosen people. For Jesus, His blood assures His disciples that they share in the new covenant brought about by His sacrifices. As the Book of Hebrews says, Christ’s blood now raises the power of the covenant to a new level. Blood was understood to be the life force of animal and human life. Even as the flow of blood out of the animals who were sacrificed took their lives, it brought life to the altar and to the people upon whom it was sprinkled. If that be the case, how much more will the blood of Christ bring eternal life to all of us?

Today is the feast of Corpus Christi, the Solemnity of the most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. During the time of the COVID-19 pandemic when we could not receive the Eucharist, we became more aware of a gift that we often take for granted. As we receive Jesus in Holy Communion today, let us reaffirm the covenant God has made with us. Tell Him how grateful you are that He has bound himself to you in this unconditional, irrevocable bond of love. Renew your love and commitment to Him. Tell Him how grateful you are for this miraculous gift. Then open your heart to His grace and let it strengthen your determination to love and serve Him more faithfully all the days of your life.

Love, Peace, Joy,

-Fr. Bob

Sequence

This weekend’s Liturgy of the Word will include a short version of what we call the Sequence for Corpus Christi, a poetic ode to the Holy Eucharist. There are four times throughout the year that a sequence is sung after the second reading: Easter (“Vicimae Paschali Laudes,” Christians praise the Paschal Victim); Pentecost (“Veni, Sancte Spiritus,” Come, Holy Spirit); The Body and Blood of Christ (“Lauda Sion Salvatorem”, Praise thy Savior, Zion); and on the Feast of All Souls (“Dies Irae,” Day of Wrath). The Church highlights these important feasts with a sequence to let us know they are significant to the teachings of the church: Our belief in the Death and Resurrection of Christ that conquered sin; the Holy Spirit in the Trinity; the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist; our belief in eternal life through the redemption of our souls. We sing them either in their original a capella Latin chant, a capella English chant, or English translation set to musical accompaniment as we did this weekend. We can thank Thomas Aquinas for this week’s Sequence, and James Poppleton and Scott Soper who wrote the beautiful setting.

Congratulations to Aria! Anne and Gerald’s daughter, Aria, was initiated into the mystery of Christ’s living, dying, and rising.

Let us remember Aria in our prayers, that she may live as God’s beloved child and learn to imitate Jesus in her life.

A STEWARDSHIP PRAYER FOR JUNE Dear Lord,

Your presence at the Eucharistic Table is truly the source and summit of our faith.

And in the breaking of the bread your presence is meant to impel us to reach beyond our immediate gathering and unify us with the larger gathering of our sisters and brothers around the globe.

If we can recognize you in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, we must also be able to recognize you among those who hunger and suffer in the world.

But if our faith in your presence under the appearance of bread and wine does not translate into action, we are still unbelievers.

Deepen our faith, make us good stewards of your Eucharistic presence and help us to bear fruit in the lives of those we encounter, especially those most in need of your love and compassion.

Amen.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Children’s

Liturgy of the Word will start again in the church hall during the 10:00 AM Mass the weekend of June 20th! However, we are in need of leaders for this important ministry. What is Children’s Liturgy of the Word? It is worshiping and sharing God’s word at the children’s level. Training and resources are provided. Depending on how many leaders we have, the commitment is taking time to prepare to lead and then actually leading the worship with the children one Sunday a month or one Sunday every other month. If you are feeling called to help in this ministry, please email Mary Jo Hennemann at [email protected] or call 761-0480 x115.

GROWING FAITH It is that time of year when many are excited about the school year ending: the start of summer sports and going on vacations. I don’t know about you, but the lifting of pandemic protocols in many places has me excited! There is now a visible shift in the pandemic. I am filled with such joy!

However, I stay mindful of what we had been through in the past 14 months. The uncertainty and the decrease in connecting with people face to face had its toll on me. I prayed more in the past year than I had ever before. In the past year plus, we were bombarded with reasons to pray—and for many of us we had the extra time to pray. Now that our lives are becoming more ‘normal,’ we must never forget the One who saw us through the uncertainty of the last year. As our lives return to busyness, we must continue to stay connected with Christ in prayer. As we connect with friends at summer sporting events, take a moment to thank God for our friends and the time together. As we hike on a trail, thank God for the ability to take each step. As we have family over sitting around a backyard fire, thank God for our family and the ability to be together. And as we travel through the summer, remember that the churches are open so we can stop in and pray the ultimate prayer of thanksgiving we Catholics have—the Mass. As we come away from the uncertainty and disconnectedness from the past year and move towards busyness again, I invite us to reflect on how we can remain connected with the one constant in our lives—God. Blessings, -Mary Jo

Memorial/Celebration Bricks On May 30th Fr. George formally blessed 9 new bricks which will be placed in the island at the north end of the parking lot. Many bricks memorialize a loved one who has passed, however there are many others that express our thanks for blessings God has given us, or are expressions of love for family and friends. Consider purchasing a brick to show your love and/or appreciation for the things that have been given to you. Flyers are available at the Information Desk in the church lobby.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

If you are an adult and are seeking Baptism, Eucharist, and/or Confirmation in the Catholic Church, I invite you to begin the process of the

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) here at Saint James Parish.

This is a yearlong process of encountering Jesus and growing in your understanding of the sacred Scriptures and the teachings and traditions of

the Catholic Church. This year of growth culminates in the reception of these three sacraments at the Easter Vigil liturgy in 2022.
