About the J. Laiten Weed Honors Orchestra
Twenty-two of the high-school string students who achieved the top scores in auditions for South Dakota All-State Orchestra compose each year's J. Laiten Weed Honors Orchestra. They begin preparing Honors Orchestra music individually in December and arrive on the Thursday evening before the Saturday concert to audition for solo assignments and placement within the group. An intense two days of rehearsals follow, culminating in a performance that invariably proves to be polished, refined and exhilarating. Conductors for the group have been top music educators from South Dakota and around the country, including the late Dr. Weed.
J. Laiten Weed was one of the first professional string teachers in South Dakota. Director of the Yankton College Conservatory of Music, he was a charter member of the South Dakota String Teachers Association. An Honors Orchestra to showcase the state's top string students—and to provide them with a unique musical learning experience—was a goal that Laiten shared with other string teachers for several years. In 1986, SDSTA president Raymond Sidoti secured initial funding for a state Honors Orchestra from the American String Teachers Association and the SD Arts Council. The next February, during one of Laiten Weed's several terms as president of SDSTA, the Honors Orchestra became a reality.
When his wife, Lucy, died in 1986, Laiten established a string scholarship fund in her name. The fund soon evolved into the Lucy Palermo Weed String Competition. The generous bequest received fol-lowing Laiten Weed's death in 1989 enabled the competition to provide financial sponsorship of the Honors Orchestra. Hence the orchestra is dedicated to the legacy and the memory of J. Laiten Weed—gentleman, consummate teacher and professional musician. Through his vision and provision for the future, SDSTA has both the Lucy Palermo Weed String Competition and the J. Laiten Weed Honors Orchestra to promote and reward excellence in string music.

About the Music Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1871) was perhaps one of the most amazing musical geniuses in all of music history! It has been said that God created Mozart to make the rest of us feel inferior!
This Allegro is the middle movement from a larger work called Adagio and Allegro in F Minor, K. 594, which was originally composed in 1790 for a mechanical organ. Written as part of a funeral mass, the outer movements are slow and solemn while the Allegro middle movement is actually fast, cheerful and upbeat!
Joan Trimble (1915-2000) was born in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, UK. She studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and Trinity College in Dublin before going to the Royal College of Music in London to study piano with Arthur Benjamin and composition with Ralph Vaughan Williams and Herbert Howells. Her music delightfully combines impressionist harmonic language with melodic and rhythmic inflections derived from Irish traditional music.
Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000) was born in Somerville, MA, as Alan Vaness Chakmakjian. He became a very prolific American composer with over 500 opus numbers. His music assimilates the music of many cultures, sounding reverential, mystical and nostalgic. In 1934, Hovhaness traveled to Finland to meet Jean Sibelius, whose music he had greatly admired since childhood. Hovhaness became interested in Armenian culture and music, and won a scholarship to Tanglewood to study with Bohuslav Martinú. Both Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland voiced disapproval of Hovhaness’s music causing Hovhaness to abandon his scholarship and leave Tanglewood prematurely. In frustration, Hovhaness destroyed a number of his works. Hovhaness later developed a strong interest in Indian music and learned to play the sitar.
John Nicholson Ireland (1879-1962) was born in Bowdon, near Altrincham, Cheshire, UK, into a family of Scottish descent and some cultural distinction. His elderly father and middle-aged mother both died before John’s 16th birthday.
Ireland is well known as a composer of songs and chamber music, and Benjamin Britten was one of his students. He favored small forms and wrote neither symphonies nor operas. He is probably best known for the anthem Greater Love Hath No Man, commemorating the victims of war. My Song is Love Unknown is sung in churches throughout the English-speaking world, as is his Communion Service in C major.

About the Music (continued)Josef Suk, Jr. (1874-1935) inherited much of his musical skill on violin, piano and organ from his father, Josef Suk, senior. One of Josef Suk’s greatest inspirations was Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. Known as one of his favorite pupils, Suk became very close to Dvořák, eventually marrying his daughter. This connection marked some of Suk’s happier times in his life and music. Even though Suk wrote mostly instrumental music and was most influenced by Dvořák, his music was recognized and noticed by other well-known composers such as Brahms, Hanslick, Mahler and Berg. This Serenade for Strings is one of Suk’s more popular works.
Paul Creston (1906-1985) was an Italian-American composer, whose original name was Giuseppe Guttoveggio! He wrote symphonies, concerti, sonatas for many instruments, string quartets, and suites, as well as works for wind band. Some of his well-known wind band pieces include Zanoni, Prelude and Dance, and the Celebration Overture. He was a notable teacher of composers including John Corigliano and Elliot Schwartz. Several of his music theory textbooks are Principles of Rhythm (1964) and Rational Metric Notation (1979).
John Rutter (1945- ) was born in London and his music is eclectic, influenced by 20th-century choral traditions in France, England and America. Almost every choral anthem and hymn that he writes has a subsequent orchestral accompaniment, using various instrumentations, in addition to the standard piano/organ accompaniment. His music is very popular, easily accessible, and delightful to hear. Some of his famous compositions include Christmas carols, a Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, and an opera for young people called Bang!
Alexander Safford (1968- ) was born and raised in Montana. He received a Bachelor of Music Education and a Bachelor of Arts in modern languages from Montana State University. He subsequently earned a Master of Music degree in composition from the University of Arizona, where he also studied conducting with Gregg Hanson. Mr. Safford is currently an orchestra and music composition instructor at Orchard Park High School in New York. An active composer, Mr. Safford is a member of ASCAP and the winner of the 2002 TODA Composition Competition
Pepper Music Company describes Alexander Safford’s Revelation’s Edge thus: “Highly rhythmic and energetic, this work will surely keep the audience on the edge of their seats. After the initial theme is established, a second, more lyrical theme is presented. A lively development ensues, leading the orchestra to the original theme and an exciting conclusion!”
