  • WABC-TV in New York City, ran the evening’s paddle raiser.

The evening included a sumptu-ous dinner, world-class entertain-ment and one-of-a-kind live and si-lent auction items for the 420 guests, including actress and singer Vanessa Williams and America’s Got Talent 2016 participants Raii and Whitney Smith.

“The Children’s Benefit Gala is the high point of our fundraising year because it unites all the generous sponsors, donors, friends, students, principals and teachers as well as ETM staff members and volunteers for an evening of celebration of all that the ETM program has accom-plished,” says ETM Executive Director Katherine Damkohler. “We are truly blessed. The ETM music educa-tion program’s steady growth over the last 26 years — doubling in size since 2012 — would not be possible without our generous supporters. The funding we receive at the Children’s Benefit Gala will greatly increase the impact and expansion of our pro-gram.”

Guests were then treated to special performances by ETM partner school students; Grammy Award-winning violinist and longstanding ETM Board member Joshua Bell; international opera superstar Renée Fleming and string trio sensation Time for Three.

P.S. 91 Principal Meridith Struhl Nasjletti and M.S. 180 Principal Mar-lon Williams both spoke about the impact of partnering with Education Through Music.

“I can truly say, with absolute confidence, that music education has turned the students of P.S. 91 into leaders and dreamers. I will forever be grateful to ETM for their unwaver-ing support of and commitment to my school and my students,” said Principal Nasjletti.

Record Number of Students Perform at End-of-the-Year ETM Festival at Lehman College

Over 1,300 elementary and middle school band, orchestra and choir students from ETM partner schools traveled to the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx to celebrate music education at the fifth annual ETM Festival. This year’s event was the largest gathering of students since the ETM Festival began and included the addition of choir students to the lineup of perfor-mance groups.

The two-day festival kicked off each morning with enthusiastic renditions of the National Anthem followed by performances by orches-tras and choirs on June 6th and band performances on June 7. Students celebrated their musical achieve-ments and performed alongside their peers for an audience of school, fam-ily and community supporters.

Melissa and Shawna, eighth-grade students from M.S. 180 in the

Bronx, who play in both their school’s orchestra and jazz band were eager to share their excitement as they prepared to take the stage on June 6. “I felt nervous when I performed at my first ETM Festival in fifth grade. Now I feel very confident and a little sentimental because this will be my last festival,” remarked Tawrat.

“I can express myself through playing music and I can see all I have accomplished since I played my first note on my trumpet,” said Marissa. “When I notice new students strug-gling in band or orchestra, I try to mentor the younger players because I know how hard it can be to start playing an instrument,” she added.

Following each school’s perfor-mance, employee volunteers with Cushman & Wakefield and Goldman Sachs presented students with an ETM Festival medal for success-fully completing a year of music

while each music director received a trophy to mark their school’s musical achievements.

“We are excited to celebrate the accomplishments of our students at the annual ETM Festival, the year-end performance showcasing partner school students’ musical achieve-ments,” says ETM Executive Director Katherine Damkohler. “It is so gratify-ing to witness the transformation of these students into confident musi-cians who have devoted themselves to learning their instrument and repertoire. The ETM Festival is the culmination of all their hard work on a large-scale concert stage.”

ETM Welcomes Penny Swift as New COO

In June, Education Through Music (ETM) welcomed Penny Swift as Chief Operating Officer. ETM’s program has grown steadily over the last 26 years, doubling in size since 2012. The new position of Chief Operating Officer builds ETM’s organizational capacity both to support the growth to date and support expansion in the future, as we strive to reach more schools and children.

Ms. Swift’s 19 years of education experience, including most recently serving as the Divisional Vice President of the Eastern Division for Brightside Academy, will be instrumental in furthering ETM’s impact and efficiency. In her role, Ms. Swift reports to Executive Director Katherine Damkohler.

“Education Through Music’s strong model, proven im-pact, and plan for growth all appeal to my desire to do work that makes a difference in the lives of others,” said Swift. “I am very excited to help lead Education Through Music’s mission to ensure every child receives music edu-cation as part of a comprehensive education.”
