If you happen to go back to last edition of the Red River Ramblings, you would have found me whining about the horribly cold weather we were experiencing ... well a few weeks later the snow and ice disappeared from our roads and I was able to have my car licensed and driving (was still

too cold to lower the roof unfortunately) on March 14th. So in other words, we experienced typical unpredictable prairie weather!

Also since the last edition, a new Porsche owner took delivery of his 918 Spyder in Winnipeg. There are a few details to iron out but he has agreed to join us as a member. Hopefully he will also consent to an interview and allow us to take some pictures of his modern marvel for our newsletter (and a test drive for the Editor, naturally!) Please “stay tuned” to the website and future editions of Red River Ramblings for more on this amazing machine.

Now that spring has arrived, your board of directors is pleased to present an exciting list of events we have been putting together for the rest of the year. It is a combination of some of the trips we went on last year such as Bemidji and the drive to the Whiteshell, plus the return of dinner cruises. For more details there is a list in this newsletter and as always on the region's website at .www.redriverpca.org

Now that Spring has finally arrived, it’s time to take pleasure in the basics of Porsche ownership. Driving, yes, that’s a given. But it’s also amazing what satisfaction can be gleaned from simple cleaning. Yes, cleaning.

Of course, it goes without saying that the old ways are the best. Bucket, hose, and sheepskin mitt are

my weapons of choice, along with a mild car-specif ic washing soap. Wash from top to bottom, leaving the wheels for last. To dry, I first use a rubber squeegee on the glass, then dry the rest of the car with

lint-free soft synthetic chamois cloths. It usually takes two to do the job. I use the first one to take most of the water off, then finish with the second. I go back and dry the wheels with the first cloth as it’s damp and I find that works best on the Fuchs.

When the outside’s looking good I turn to the interior. I know some do it the other way around but I find it easier this way - you can use the damp chamois cloth to clean the interior sills. Shake out the mats (downwind of the clean car!) or vacuum as necessary. I’ll wipe down the interior with a microfibre cloth if it’s dusty, and a few times a year, use formulated leather wipes to condition the seats and interior panels.

On a sunny summer morning there’s not much more satisfying than washing the car. Oh, maybe just one thing - taking that beautiful clean car for a spirited drive!

Do you remember lying in bedWith your covers pulled up over your head?Radio playin' so no one can see

We need change, we need it fastBefore rock's just part of the past'Cause lately it all sounds the same to me, oh oh

-The Ramones, “Do You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio?”

Cruising in the new 2015 Porsche Macan S, it seemed oddly appropriate to hear CKUW-FM playing this song. Do you remember when Porsche only made sports cars? Well, it's been awhile. The Cayenne was first produced in 2002 - 13 years ago! - and the Panamera sedan has been with us now for six years. These cars (the Cayenne especially) have contributed mightily to the financial success of Porsche, and we're unlikely to see the marque return to a lineup composed purely of sports cars. But Porsche insists that even these 4000-lb.-plus behemoths are infused with pure Porsche sports-car DNA. Are they right?

The Macan (a Javanese word meaning “tiger”) was introduced to the world as a brand new model for 2015. Originally referred to as the “Cajun” (for “Cayenne Junior”), the Macan is a more compact crossover-style vehicle with space for five. The Macan's architecture is based on the popular Audi Q5, but its powertrain and appointments are unique to Porsche.

Page 5: J anuar y/F e br uar y 2014

The Macan comes in two flavours: the “S” powered by a 3.0 litre twin-turbo V6 engine with 340 horsepower, and the “Turbo S” motivated by a 3.6 litre twin turbo boasting a massive 400 horsepower. Both variations feed power to all four wheels through a seven-speed version of Porsche's dual-clutch PDK transmission.

Inside, there's some serious family resemblance, with the Macan's sloping console and multitude of small buttons echoing its 911 sibling. The cockpit feel is rich, helped by comfortable leather and alcantara seating and a thick, comfortable wheel apparently shared with the mega-bucks 918 hybrid supercar. The instrument panel features three round gauges speedo, tachometer, and a multi-function screen that shows everything from audio controls to tire pressures and even front-rear torque split. The latter, incidentally, is well biased towards the rear wheels, adding to the sporty feel when underway.

Pickup is snappy, as you might expect from 340 horsepower underfoot. Make no mistake, though this is a large car, with a claimed curb weight of 4,112 lbs. With the seat adjusted properly, the view is commanding and comfortable. Steering feel from the electrically assisted wheel is excellent and tactile.

The Macan's roomy, too. With the driver's seat adjusted for me, there's plenty of legroom in the back seat to “sit behind myself.” Of course, in addition to roominess the cabin boasts pretty much every comfort and convenience feature going nowadays. Parking sensor and rear camera, heated and ventilated seats, paddle shifters, even an interesting feature called “Porsche Vehicle Tracking System” that allows an owner to track the vehicle using a smartphone.

6

But in the end, the proof of any Porsche is in the driving. In this respect, provided that one's expectations are calibrated, the Macan S doesn't disappoint. It's a family hauler par excellence that delivers plenty of power, handling, space and comfort. The Macan S is billed as a sports car it's not. It's too big and heavy for that. But for what it is, it's the best going.

Porsche(s) owned: Silver 2002 911 (996.2) Carrera

How long have you owned your Porsche? Since December 2013

Why are you passionate about Porsche? When did you first fall in love with Porsche? I am from the country of 'Die Autobahn' and have had a motorized vehicle since I was 16 years old ok, the first two years was with a 50cc moped (top speed 100km/h) since you can't get your car licence till you are 18 years old. After turning 18, I had my first encounter with a Ferdinand Porsche design. A red Volkswagen type 11, you guessed it right, a Beetle. A couple years later I saw a used beat-up Porsche 911 for sale in Berlin, a pretty rough example of a late 60's model, dark brown. The doors were unlocked, my friend and I checked out the interior, then locked the doors after us and contacted the owner. It turned out he didn't have keys for the doors!!! No deal happened. If you have a need for speed the options are limited on a teenager's budget. I went back to my roots, motorcycles. Two RD350LC's and in 1985, a Yamaha RZ500, a 500cc 4-cylinder two-stroke rocket and a "750 superbike killer" back in the day. Surprisingly, the German police also frown on speeding on public roads (believe me I tested it), so the logical choice was to go racing on the track.

After racing competitively for a couple seasons I started feeling my age and decided to quit. Later, I used track days to satisfy my need for speed. After moving to Canada other issues had priority and we ended up with a Ford Escort Station wagon, a real speed demon! In 2001 the race bug came back and I joined the Manitoba Roadracing Association for two seasons. Fast forward to 2013, my 50th birthday and a voucher for some laps in a Porsche 997 Turbo S and a Ferrari (a 430, I believe) at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in October. I drove the Ferrari first to get a feel for the track and then the moment I have been waiting for, for the first time behind the wheels of a drivable 911. Getting out of the Porsche was a task, since my legs felt like jello, and my knees where shaking, but I had the biggest smile on my face. What a great birthday present. At the end of the Vegas trip we rented a 997 cabriolet for a day to top it off - which is a whole story in itself.

I found myself searching for convertible sport cars that can go fast. Not long after, browsing through Kijiji, this private Porsche ad popped up, a 2002 silver 911 cabriolet in Winnipeg. Wow this was a sign. After various e-mails and internet searches, I collected enough information to pitch the idea to my wife, Sabine. On Dec. 21 the family drove to the Peg and picked up the "new to us" 996, on probably one of the coldest days that year (-29Cº).

So why a Porsche? Porsche is the embodiment of a true sports car with heritage, German heritage. The unmistakable shape of the 911 fascinated me since I was a little boy, I especially remember the 934 Jägermeister Porsche from the late '70s. For many decades I have collected Porsche items (mostly 911) with the thought that I will never be able to afford one. How life changes.

What's the Porsche you wish you could own? We are happy with our 996, but we are looking into a Cayenne for the year-round Porsche experience.

What do you do for a living? After working for Bosch- Siemens in Germany as a production supervisor, my career path changed after moving to Canada. For the past 16 years I have been working for a Civil Engineering and Architectural Firm as Senior Technician.

Do you have any other hobbies? I was involved in Minor Hockey and Junior A Hockey for over 12 years. I cycle and I am the organizer of a cycling group (siouxcycling.ca) here in Sioux Lookout. I started playing hockey in 2000 and I currently play goal for the 3-time champion team in the local commercial hockey league. Sabine and I enjoy traveling.

What's one thing about you that people in the club don't know? I raced in the German Motorcycle Grand Prix in 1988 on an Aprilia 125. I also had the opportunity to race on the most beautiful track in the world, the Green Hell (Nürburgring Nordschleife) with a personal best of 9 minutes 41 sec. (avg 130km/h - 80mph) for one lap - on a motorcycle!
