Hello fellow PCA members,

Sincerely,

Geoff Reimche

President, Red River PCA

I am wondering if Mother Nature makes some sort of commission on snow tires? There must be a logical explanation for our weather patterns, although I cannot think of one! Global warming maybe? It is not fair, but on the upside, turning the key on our cars, and pulling them out into the sunshine will be even more gratifying when that opportunity finally presents itself!

For most, it will probably be the first weekend in

May. Not because the weather is hot, the craters are repaired and

the streets are clean, but because we just simply cannot wait any

longer! I am very anxious to get my car out, but I am also looking

forward to our summer meetings and events!

The thought of gathering a large group of diverse people with a

common passion reminds me of the PCA statement, “It's not just

the cars, it's the people”. This statement has really been proven to

me over the last couple of weeks! I know our club is testament to

the statement, however I have had the pleasure of meeting a few

Porsche admirers that were contemplating joining our club, but

were not sure of how to go about doing so. All five were aware

that a club existed but it seems that they were not sure if there

was any benefit in joining. They think differently now, and their

passion for Porsches is not only commonly shared, but

encouraging to hear! One gentleman, for example, has always

wanted an air cooled 911. Four years ago, he found one on line in

Toronto, purchased the car without seeing it in person, flew out to

Toronto and drove it home! I met him by chance in a Safeway

parking lot last week and he was ecstatic that someone would

“randomly” stop him to ask about his old car. He talked

enthusiastically and at length about all of the things that he has

learned about the car, its history and the history of the Porsche

brand. His car has some very unique and tasteful “updates” and

one of his next few tasks is to send the VIN to Porsche to find out

what the original build spec was. Does anyone know if a 1977 911

had a factory wide body option? Regardless, our conversation

was full of enthusiasm, discovery, and useless facts that only a

Porsche nut would appreciate, and ended with affirmation that

there are many great people in our city just waiting to unlock their

passion for Porsche. I am looking forward to having him in our

club!

As we get ready for our summer season, please remember to

drive with caution, awareness, respect and obey all traffic laws,

but if you cannot possibly do any of these things, please turn off

your GoPro! LOL! Just kidding! ……....... you can leave it on.

In the April/May issue, the article “MPI Introduces Collector Plates” indicated that owners wanting collector plates must verify their car’s age and value through MAAC. In fact, owners may elect to do this directly through MPI. Thanks to the member who pointed this out to the Editor.

Welcome to your Red River Ramblings for May/June 2014!

As I sit down to write this, it’s officially been “Spring” for almost six weeks... but it sure doesn’t feel like it. The snow is barely melted off the patio, the thermometer outside hasn’t yet nudged 15 degrees, and my 911 still sits in the garage under its cover. Yes, I charged the

battery and fired up the beast in a burst of optimism last weekend, but it still feels like far from the weather required to get our summer cars on the road.

So what do we do while we wait? For many, we think about what improvements or changes we’re going to make to our cars this year. For me, the ultimate 911has ever been and always will be the 3.2 Carrera-based Ruf CTR, otherwise known as the Yellowbird. And while I’ll likely never own a real Yellowbird, I couldn’t resist buying a set of replica Ruf alloy wheels for my car over the winter.

But what to do now? Stick with the Ruf wheels or embrace the dream and change out the front and rear bumpers for replica Ruf items as well? While my car can’t come close to matching the performance of the 469bhp original, it would be pretty cool to have a car that looked like a smooth-bumpered CTR.

A complicating factor in this whole equation is the ridiculous current market for air-cooled 911s. Demand for these cars is higher than ever and with it, prices are rising by the week for original cars. The mods I’ve planned are reversible, sure, but doing so would require work. I haven’t yet decided which way to go. Maybe once I install those gorgeous 5-spoke alloy wheels that will make my mind up for me... In any case, we shouldn’t feel like we’re just caretakers for the next owner. It’s your car to enjoy however you want - stock or modified.

You’ll note that this is certainly a “bumper-sized” issue of our newsletter, due to the inclusion of a copy of our new club constitution. Please give it a read. I also want to thank Andy Tighe (whose black beauty graced the cover of our last issue) for the article covering the recent suspension rebuild he did on his Carrera 3.2. There’s also lots of content this issue on Porsche club events past (art show, tech night) and future. The summer (if it ever comes) will provide lots of opportunities for us to enjoy our cars and our club. Make sure to get out there and enjoy it!

This spring, after putting it off all winter, I finally got round to

replacing the worn out spring plate bushings on the back of

the 911. They had needed it for a while, and as you can see in

the photo they had flowed and were no longer holding the

torsion tube cover concentric to the torsion tube or in the

spring plate cover. If I had left it any longer, I think ultimately

the metal on metal contact would have damaged the torsion

tube covers.

The first thing I did was soak everything in Aero Kroil, which is

a simply amazing penetrating fluid. It's not cheap (about $20 a

can) but it really is in a league of its own. If you squirt this stuff

on bolts, they just about walk themselves out and fall on the

floor! These bolts haven't been apart for maybe 25 years, so I

left them to soak for a good week before I tackled any of this. I

also measured ride height at the back of the car and

confirmed that before I started, the car was sitting level on its

wheels.

In an ideal world you would want to get the car jacked up but

still level from front to back and left to right. That's because

later on you'll want to measure the angle of the spring plate

with no tension. I knew my car wasn't quite level (my floor

slopes toward a floor drain and the axle stands wouldn't

accommodate it), but my goal was to put the rear suspension

back together exactly as it came apart regardless. The torsion

bars on a 1988 have 47 splines on the inner end (one every

7.66°) and only 46 splines (one every 7.82°) on the outside

end. Knowing that, you know that if you started from scratch

you can set the spring plate to any angle in increments of 0.16°

but every time you change splines it's a fair amount of work

and I just didn't want to go there, hence trying to put it back

together exactly as I found it. On the 84-86 cars the spline

count is different but I believe the increments are about 0.8°.

Final adjustments can be made using the two bolts that secure

the torsion tube cover to the spring plate.

So step one is to get the car up on the stands with the

wheels off. I removed the brake disc / drum, the roll bar,

and inner CV joint from the gearbox. I did not remove

the wheel bearing or hub. Then it's time to lower the

spring plate until there is no more tension on the

torsion bar, but knowing you want to reattach it to the

trailing arm as close as possible to where it currently is,

it’s a good idea to scribe a line on the trailing arm and

trace the outline of the spring plate before you separate

the two.

Then I cracked the bolts loose...

I figured now was a good time since they would be tight

as hell and it would help to have the spring plate still

under load. The final thing to do is remove the bolt

holding the trailing arm to the damper and allow the

torsion bar to unload and move the spring plate and

trailing arm downwards.

This is the dicey bit, as the damper is all that is stopping

the trailing arm pushing down very hard. There are

cases on the web of people being injured doing this so

it's recommended to support the underside of the

trailing arm with a trolley jack and control its descent.

Once it's all the way down (its goes to about 30° - 32° to

horizontal) it's time to finish removing the bolts that

hold the trailing arm onto the spring plate and place a

jack stand underneath. You also need a jack stand

under the end of the drive shaft local to the gearbox. I

actually started to run out of stands (I have six, two at

the front, two at the rear, and two under the trailing

arms) and had to resort to 12 packs of beer to hold up

drive shafts.

DVDs by donating them - contact the Librarian! [email protected] Recent acquisitions.

Suspension Rebuild, continued...Once the spring plate is under no more tension I checked the

angle it was sitting at. My intention was always to put it back

exactly where it came from. I used a simple angle finder (see

photo below) and recorded it. I also took measurements of

how the torsion plate cover was attached to the spring plate as

there is perhaps an inch of adjustment to be had there too

with the slotted hole and eccentric bolt.

Next comes the brutal part of getting the torsion tube cover

and the spring plate cover off the side of the car. In a nutshell,

there is no trick, its just lots of wiggling, WD40, swearing, pry

bars, more wiggling. Then all of a sudden it just falls off in your

hand leaving you wondering what was holding it in there. A

bearing puller at the time was not an option because the

torsion tube cover has a pressed in metal cap, and I was trying

to keep that intact.

I was lucky I think, in that the torsion bar came out with the

torsion tube cover and that allowed me to record the way it

was located. I made a little tool from a piece of angle iron and

a small plate and marked the bar with a paint marker before

removing it from the torsion tube cover. Knowing that the bar

would go back in at the same spline really helps, because I

knew if I assembled it again on the ground and then offered

the whole assembly back up to the car, I'd definitely hit the

correct spline inside the car or I'd be seven and a half degrees

out each way which would be obvious.

I was pleased to find the torsion bars still covered in

grease with no signs of rust or scratches and the inside

of the torsion tube was clean too, so all that was

required was to give the splines inside the car a quick

scrub with a toothbrush on a stick and some WD40. The

torsion bar was given a clean too and set aside. It’s

important to note that the outside ends of torsion bars

are marked with an L and an R. The letters go to the

outside of the car - remember they have a different

number of splines.

The key is to heat the inside of the tube until the rubber starts to smoke...

At the factory, the rubber bushes were vulcanised onto

the metal of the torsion tube cover. Removing them

also involves some swearing but it does begin to go

quicker and you do get faster the more you do it. The

key is to heat the inside of the tube until the rubber

starts to smoke. Then some report that they can be

pulled off by hand but I guess I must be a little weak. On

my first one, I ended up carving away at it with various

blades including a curved 'chisel' tool that comes with

the new bushes. It took me over an hour and a half to

remove and clean up all the old rubber from the first

bush. By the time I got to the fourth, I had technique,

and I can now have these things off and cleaned in

about 5-10 minutes (if anyone wants to do theirs this

year I can help with this bit). The trick is to cut the bush

into three pieces, slice round the circumference at the

spring plate too, and then heat the inside of the tube.

Once hot, drive the curved chisel between the rubber

and the metal with a hammer, fast while it’s hot, and

you'll peel away a third at a time. A braided wire brush

on a drill will take care of the residue.

Suspension Rebuild, continued...

Wear a dust mask at least when doing this. I think I poisoned

myself a little with the rubber and zinc dust and I could smell the

stuff in my nose for a few days afterwards.

Once clean, it was apparent that the old zinc coating on these

parts was no longer going to prevent corrosion, and so I opted to

get them re-plated later in the week. Funnily enough, that smell

came back when I visited the zinc plant and I really think I made

a mistake in cleaning these parts without a dust mask.

As I was anticipating breaking some fasteners during disassembly

I had purchased a hardware kit that included everything but the

six eccentrics required (they are worth $70 a pop!), but when I

realised I was going to have to re-plate the spring plates I opted

to re-plate the eccentrics too. They came back looking and

operating like new.

Once the parts came back from plating it was time to put

it all back together. The new bushes have to be glued on

and the glue sets in 5 seconds. The instructions are to put

the glue on the metal shaft and slide / twist the new bush

into place, but the new bushes are too tight and stiff to

move by hand and so I saw a problem. Failure to get the

bush all the way seated before the glue set, would ruin

the whole job. I'd be set back as far as carving off the

bushes and starting over again. So made another tool

from a piece of pipe and used it to bray the bushes home

with a big hammer in about 1 second flat. It was a little

nerve racking but I couldn't face carving those things off

again so I really went at it quite hard and got them on

there real quick. It was all starting to look quite nice.

Next I greased up the torsion bars and smeared the

splines with copper slip, and using the angle iron tool I

previously made, I put the bars back in the torsion tube

cover exactly where they had come from. When I offered

it up to the side of the car found the new bushes were

such a tight fit in the side of the car I had to use long bolts

to pull the assembly into the side of the car but it went

well. I was very pleased I knew the splines were correct.

I'd hate to have to do this over and over. In fact, I'm not

even sure I'd be able to remove the new assembly from

the side of the car.

Failure to get the bush all the way seated before the glue set, would ruin the whole job.

After that it was just a case of reassembling the back end

of the car taking care to put the spring plate back on the

trailing arm as close to where it came from as possible. It

will of course need to go in for an alignment after work

like this but I'm hopeful that I have it reasonably close .

I'm not going to put the access hatch back on or the

rocker panel though until the alignment is done, just in

case we need to mess with ride height etc...

I think I'm probably into this project for way longer than I should

be, but I am a bit particular and slow sometimes. Ridiculously so

some might say but I think if I did it again, I'd be a lot quicker. I'm

also slowed down by being a bit meticulous about fasteners.

I’m a bit meticulous about fasteners.

When Geoff and I dropped the engine on my car a few years ago

(something that Geoff later revealed he had never done before

and didn't know how), I learned to bag bolts. Someone told me

before I started that task to bag everything and write on it where

it came from. It really helped a few months later when the

engine went back in. It’s good advice and I did it for this job too.

It was perhaps not necessary but over the years I've wasted so

much time looking for tools and fasteners I tend to get very

organised now. All the tools in one place, all the fasteners

separated.

That's it for this winter though, now I just want to enjoy the

summer. Hopefully I make it to the May meeting with the car. It

will depend on whether or not there are any issues with the

alignment.

Tech Night at Porsche Centre Winnipeg

On March 27, Porsche Centre Winnipeg hosted its first “Tech Night” with almost a hundred Porsche enthusiasts in attendance. Guests were treated to fabulous food and drink served up by festively attired attendants, but as usual the cars were the main attraction.

A new Carrera was suspended above the shop floor with its engine removed and on display, while techs showed off the new Turbo’s four-wheel-steering mechanism, turning the rear wheels back and forth by remote control!

Porsche Canada’s Field Technical Manager, Greg Aguilera, was a knowledgeable and affable host, presenting a fascinating technical video on the new 918 Hybrid and presiding over a genuinely challenging Porsche quiz. Greg remarked that Winnipeg’s Porsche crowd was the most enthusiastic, knowledgeable and numerous he’d yet encountered on his cross-Canada trip.

Attendees also got to see a demonstration of the new laser alignment rack, a most impressive and efficient piece of equipment.

A genuinely enjoyable evening - if you missed it, shame on you! ;-) (There’s more pictures on page 17)

Fine Art Exhibition at Porsche Centre WinnipegPorsche Centre Winnipeg welcomed fine artist Rand Heidinger on March 21for an exclusive showing of his fine art pieces.

Heidinger, represented by Mayberry Fine Art, showed over half-a-dozen pieces - paintings of Porsche street and race cars, executed with automotive paints on acrylic panels.”When I was approached to do a series of paintings of Porsche cars, I was excited,” said Heidinger, who usually works in abstract art. “The cars I painted are among my favourites - street and racing, both newer and vintage. I selected the images specifically to suit the composition I had in mind.”

Porsche fans in attendance were treated to a very special evening of food, wine and fine art featuring our favourite automotive subjects!

P o r s c h e P e o p l e : Pelle Lindbergh

This issue, I’m starting an irregular feature called “Porsche People”. In it I’ll profile well-known people with a passion for Porsche, but who aren’t necessarily associated with the marque in any official way, other than as an enthusiast.

As the Stanley Cup playoffs are well underway (go Habs go!!) and the weather is much more like winter than summer, it’s appropriate to profile a hockey player - one of the greatest goalies ever to play the game professionally.

Per-Goran Eric “Pelle” Lindbergh was born in Stockholm, Sweden on 24 May 1959. From a young age he was passionate about hockey, and dreamed of playing in the NHL for his favourite team, the Philadelphia Flyers.

Although small by modern standards for goalies (he stood 5’8” and weighed 160lbs.) Lindbergh made up for his lack of size with sheer skill and determination. Three times he represented Sweden at the World Junior Championships, and was selected to wear the Tre Kronor sweater for the senior world championships. Notably, he also started in goal for the Swedes at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, and was the only goalie not to be defeated by the gold medallist American team (they played to a 2-2 tie early in the tournament).

In 1984-85 Lindbergh became the first European to win the Vezina Trophy.Lindbergh was drafted by his dream team, the Philadelphia Flyers, in the third round of the 1979 NHL entry draft. He continued to play in Sweden’s elite league and was naturally disappointed when his team narrowly missed the 1979-80 playoffs, but his bad mood was short-lived when he found he’d been offered a playing contract by the Flyers.

After rookie camp in September 1980, Lindbergh was assigned to the Maine Mariners of the AHL. He enjoyed a successful season in the Flyers’ farm system; while the Mariners lost the Calder Cup to Adirondack, Lindbergh cleaned up on the individual awards - including league MVP.

The next season saw Lindbergh assigned once more to the farm team. He knew he could play in the big show, though, and frustratedly gave management an ultimatum: NHL or trade. The Flyers granted his wish and Lindbergh made his debut in net on Hallowe’en night, 1981, against Buffalo. The game ended in defeat for the Flyers and hospital for Lindbergh - he’d become seriously dehydrated during the game. This resulted in an innovation - Lindbergh was the first goalie to keep a waterbottle on top of his net, something every goalie now does today.

In 1982-83 Lindbergh became the Flyers’ starting goalie and was named to the NHL All-Star team, but the ‘83-’84 campaign was a disaster with the Flyers making an early playoff exit.

The ‘84-’85 season was a brilliant one for the Flyers and Lindbergh - the team made it to the Stanley Cup final (losing to Edmonton) but Lindbergh shone, leading the NHL in wins and winning the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goalie.

In the ‘85-’86 campaign the Flyers picked up where they had left off, with the team putting up a 10-game winning streak starting in late October. Flyers coach Mike Keenan rewarded the group with a rare day off on November 11, 1985. The night before, Lindbergh cut short a celebration with his teammates to go home early, but a friend convinced him to come out for more socializing.

Although friends later said that he would never drive in Sweden after having even one beer, his blood alcohol level was well over the legal limit when he crashed his new Porsche 930 Turbo slant-nose into a concrete wall at almost 90mph. Lindbergh’s passengers survived, but the young goalie died two days later, without regaining consciousness.

Although his number 31 jersey was never retired by the Flyers, it has never been worn by another player since.

A hobo rings the doorbell of a country house. The homeowner answers the door. “Would you happen to have any work I could do in exchange for a meal?” the hobo asks. The homeowner thinks for a minute. “Well, if you go around back you’ll find a gallon of red paint, you can paint the porch.”The hobo gratefully goes around back. Awhile later he knocks on the door again. “All finished?”“Yep, I’m all done. Ready for that meal now,” the hobo says, “but just so’s you know, that wasn’t a porch, it was a Ferrari.”
