VIII. Overview of the Iwate University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Division of Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies 1. Purpose As we face more serious global challenges in this increasingly globalized and multicultural modern society, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences aims to develop human resources who can use their expertise in the natural sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences, etc., to create new values from a broad perspective, unrestricted by boundaries between the humanities and the sciences, and contribute to the resolution of both local and global issues and create a sustainable society. The Division of Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies equips students with advanced expertise in language, culture, art, and history and cultivates their potential to play a leading role from a global perspective in taking over and passing down of local culture and art, promoting international exchange, and realizing a multicultural society as well as to contribute to the reconstruction after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and local revitalization. 2. Structure The Division has the following five programs. • Program for Understanding Japanese Culture In this Program, students cultivate their capacities to understand Japanese language and culture better and share this knowledge with the rest of the world as a teacher by studying a wide range of subjects from Japanese language, culture, history, and thought, to calligraphy as well as develop multiple aspects of Japan and Japanese culture in the world through various subjects designed to train teachers of Japanese language and culture. • Program for Introducing Global Culture The Program offers English, German, French, Russian, and Chinese language courses as well as practical subjects for introducing the literature and culture of multiple linguistic areas. Students also develop foreign language skills through subjects for introducing Japanese culture in different languages so that they can utilize the skill as a communication tool for connecting local communities to the outside world. • Program for Introducing Art The Program offers subjects for increasing expertise, techniques, and practical skills in the fields of music, art, calligraphy, etc. Students can also build their capacity to pass down, create, and spread art that is deeply rooted in the local community through "Art Management" and other subjects. • Program for Community Culture Renovation The Program offers subjects on history, geography, language and culture related to the value of cultural properties and their preservation, utilization, and introduction to the world. Students also acquire basic knowledge on cultural properties as well as actual examples of their preservation and utilization so that they gain a deeper understanding of Japanese and world history and take initiative in preserving local cultural properties and introducing them to the world while revitalizing local cultures. • Program for Understanding Cultural Diversity The Program teaches basic theories about various cultural traits as well as the cultural structures that lead to conflicts within a culture or between cultures. Based on this knowledge, students build their capacity to take action and make recommendations on cross-cultural communication, cultural coexistence, and the preservation and development of culture through subjects on various aspects of culture, issues arising between cultures and groups, and practical examples of multiculturalism in politics and education. 3. Course registration and subjects When students are admitted to the Program they applied to, they will consult an instructor of the Program to discuss their research theme and process, and decide on one primary supervisor and two secondary supervisors (one of which needs to be an instructor from a different field). Supervisors will provide instructions on their research as well as on the selection of courses of which to register. 4. Certification of completing a program and degree conferment A Master of Arts degree will be awarded to the students who are enrolled for the terms of years as specified by the Division, earn a total of 33 credits or more from required and selective subjects, and pass the defense and final exams for their master’s thesis. 5. Potential qualifications Teacher's Certificate Those who already have a Junior High School Grade 1 Teacher’s Certificate or High School Grade 1 Teacher’s Certificate can obtain a Specialized Teacher’s Certificate for Junior High School and High School related to the subjects concerned after completing the credit requirements in this Division. However, depending on their course registration status before admission to a graduate program, it may take longer than two years to obtain the certificate. - Junior High School Specialized Teacher’s Certificate: Japanese language, social studies, art, and English language - High School Specialized Teacher’s Certificate: Japanese language, geography/history, civics, art, calligraphy, and English language
