Blessed Father’s Day!

The reflection offered by the Magnificat says, “The heart of God aches to ‘tear off a tender shoot’ from a mighty cedar and ‘plant it on a high and lofty mountain’ so that ‘birds of every kind shall dwell beneath it.’ That is, the Lord wants to reveal his glory by taking up our nothingness and our insignificance and turning it into something ‘majestic’ by the pure force of his love. For this to happen in us, Jesus asks that we pay the same attention to the little things of life - like mustard seeds - that he does. Christ speaks in parables because ‘reality itself is a parable. The parable does not approach our experience of the world from without; on

the contrary, it is the parable that gives this experience its proper depth and reveals what is hidden in things themselves’ (Pope Benedict XVI). When we ‘walk by faith, not by sight’ the hidden depths of things

become apparent”.

On Friday, June 22nd, the Church celebrates two great saints but loved their country but God even more, Sts. John Fisher and Thomas More. John Fisher was born in Yorkshire, England in 1469. He was educated to become a Catholic priest in Cambridge. He was a wonderful teacher who helped his students grow in their knowledge of the Catholic faith, but there was a lot of confusion about religion in those days. Regardless, Fr. John helped people know the truth about God and the Catholic Church. In 1504 he became the bishop of the poor diocese of Rochester, which he served as the Shepard for some thirty years. He was also the head of Cambridge University and the confessor of King Henry VIII’s mom. Among the bishop’s friends were Erasmus and the Great St. Thomas

More.

King Henry the VIII became angry with Bishop John for insisting that his marriage to Queen Catherine was solid and should not be able to end. At that point, Henry VIII divorced Catherine and married Anne Boleyn in a civil ceremony. The king demanded that people sign an oath of loyalty to him. He broke away from the Catholic Church and made himself the head of the new Church of England. Bishop John and Thomas More would not sign the oath. John was arrested in 1534 and placed in the Tower of London. which was damp and where his treatment was harsh. Bishop John suffered very much but would not betray his faith. Many people in England learned that both John Fisher and Thomas More were unjustly suffering much and were angered and saddened. On June 12th, 1535, Pope Paul III named Bishop John a Cardinal in hopes that King Henry VIII would set him free, but it only angered the king more, causing him to treat both John and Thomas even harsher. After ten months in prison Cardinal John was beheaded along with Sir Thomas More on June 22, 1535. They both loved their country and king but loved the true king, Christ and his kingdom even more. We pray that we will all have the courage to do what is right in the eyes of God. Sts. John

Fisher and Thomas More, pray for us.

In Christ, Fr. Brian A. Roeseler

“Recycle” Your Catholic Books and Items

Each year, the Colorado Springs Diocesan Serra Club hosts a table

at the St. Thomas Aquinas Society Catholic Conference. This year,

the theme of the conference is “God, the Father of Mercy.” This

year’s conference will be held from August 1

through August 5 at the Pikes Peak Center. The

Serra Club table offers Catholic books and other

items to conference attendees at no cost. If you

have Catholic materials you would like to

“recycle” and donate for this cause- Catholic

books, prayer books, other devotional items,

rosaries, holy cards, medals, etc.- the Serra Club would be most

appreciative! Materials can be dropped off at the Corpus Christi

church office or you can give your items directly to Jan Zabukovic,

Divine Redeemer Parish Council President and President of the

Serra Club of Colorado Springs. Thank you in advance for your

donations!
