Shipmates:

Wind and rain, rain and wind, once again Mother

Nature reminds us of her presence. Each storm

seems stronger than the one before. If you haven't

checked your boat for awhile now's the time to do

so: dock lines chafe, portholes leak, bilges fill, and

sail covers come off.

We made it through a nice Scottish supper with a

minimum of oatmeal and despite fits and starts said

goodbye to the yuletide by ceremonially burning the

Christmas tree afterwards.

Clipboards, lists, and donuts made an appearance at

the well attended work party, as did some new fac-

es.

Your Vice, Rear, and Past Commodores led the

charge on a very successful Oakland YC Cruise-in/

Crab Feed. Bravo Zulu to them and all that

helped! The cupcakes were good too...

I'm told the Happy Hours will resume once again

and the fireplace in the bar is keeping it nice and

toasty so come on down and enjoy the Fellowship

that your Club has to offer: it's you that makes our

Club special!

See you at the Club!

January has been a good

month for our Club.

Thanks to the Richmond Yacht Club cruise-in, our

Yacht Club came alive on Jan 14th. Wow what a

night! I’d like to say Thank You to everyone that

helped out in the bar lately including Colleen Field-

ing, Sybal Hallbauer, Tonja Jackson, Glenda Linn,

Bob Carpaneto, Beb Skye, John Purl, Maggie

Hutchinson, Chuck Lind, Paul Harris, Paul Lagier,

Kelly Mack, and Paul & Lillian Maheu. Also I’d like

to thank Tonja Jackson for all her hard work and

dedication as Rear Commodore in 2016.

Happy Hour on Jan 20th featured DJ “Archie” to

entertain club members. Our regular band Strange

Angels will return for the Feb 3rd Happy Hour.

Please note that I will be out of state next month

from Feb 11th through Feb 19th. Paul Maheu will be

in charge of the bar during my absence.

I have made a few changes in the prize drawing rules

when visiting the bar: You must attend Happy Hour

or another club event in order to put a ticket in the

basket and then attend the monthly meeting to see if

you’ve won.

Bartenders needed, Please contact Glenda or Elaine.

Hello,

We're almost a month down into our New Year and things in the galley are going well. We had a good New Year's Eve party thanks to Michael Blake and Debbie who prepared all the food in In-grid's absence.

Our first members meeting dinner was great, thanks to Paul, Lillian, & Luc Maheu and Luc's guests.

This past Saturday we hosted the Oakland Yacht Club for their annual crab feed. Oakland had thirty one members that attended including seven of their past Commodores. We all had a great time and the food was excellent. I sincerely thank Kelly Mack, Wayne Rundall, Rob Rectenwald, Paul Lagier, and Ted Hawkins for all their hard work in preparing the one hundred eighty pounds of crab. I'd also like to thank Paul and Lillian Maheu, Julie Rundall, and Earlene Lagier for all of there hard work in the gal-ley. The feedback from the Oakland Yacht Club members was all positive, they really enjoyed the meal and couldn't stop thanking us. And they're al-ready looking forward to next year.

I'd like to remind all of you that our 2017 crab feed is coming up February 11th, followed by the ciop-pino feed March 4th. Please get your RSVP's in ear-ly to assure that I order a sufficient amount of crab.

Join Us for Happy Hour 5:30/6:00pm

Usually 1st & 3rd Fridays each month It's always a great time. If you can, bring an appe-tizer or snack of some sort, as they are always ap-preciated and enjoyed!

Come, hang out, eat, drink, dance to the sounds of the band, have some Friday evening fun, and meet fellow club members. Glenda Linn will email the Happy Hour announcements to all.

We had a pretty busy day for our

first work party of 2017. The clouds parted and we

actually had a pretty decent day to get work done.

The Rhodes and pulling boat got pumped out, elec-

trical outlets & lights repaired, the lawn mower was

repaired & lawn mown, an inventory was taken on

dock emergency oil spill kits & status of fire extin-

guishers (need service) and operation of emergency

dock ladders was made. There was some general

weeding & weed killing & general debris cleanup

and some of the dock carts got repaired. T

he Richmond Yacht club was visiting and so we also

had to help with securing16 of their visiting boats as

well as cleaning out the two charcoal grills. Many

thanks to Paul Harris, Paul Lagier, Hal Petersen, Sue

& Mike Proudfoot, Vicky, Sam, Paul Maheu, Jim

Koss, Robbie, and anyone else who showed up that I

forgot to mention.

I will try to have a list of work that needs to be done

at each work party and to that end there will be a clip

board over by the bulletin board in the bar area

where you can add anything you see around the club

that needs attention…..Please be descriptive & pre-

cise in your descriptions so that I can find look at the

item beforehand & determine what tools & materials

we will need and have them on hand.

Hope to see more enthusiastic participation in the

months ahead!!!

Our first cruise-out of the year

will be to the San Rafael Yacht

Club for their St. Paddy’s Day

celebration, which will take place on March 11. Last

year’s event was well attended by PSPYC members,

so I’m hoping to see a big group again this year.

On April 15th we’ll be headed to Aeolian Yacht Club

for the Jones Gang concert and dinner, details and

prices to follow.

In May, we’ll be cruising to Petaluma for their

American Grafitti Celebration which will take place

May 18th thru the 20th and includes wine tasting,

music and antique cars!

I’m still waiting to hear on the date for the Alameda

YC Pirate Party…last year it was in June.

Labor Day Weekend in Half Moon Bay, will take

place September 1st thru the 4th.

I will send out updates prior to the next Foghorn as

events firm up.

Membership renewals are coming

along just fine. I am not aware of

any cancellations at this point

which is wonderful. The membership is stable and

the vast majority are happy with the PSPYC.

Dues are a major source of income for the club so if

you have not renewed, please do so ASAP.

The Budget and Finance Committee met recently

and noted that fees were not raised in 2016 and dues

for 2017 are the same bargain as last year. The rec-

ommendation last year to raise fees consistent with

the CPI or other measure of cost increases was not

adopted by the board. This year of course we will

continue to pay off the dock improvement bonds.

We have 17 remaining.

One major project approved so far this year is to re-

pair and improve the entrance gate and driveway.

We have identified a vendor so hopefully work can

start soon after the rains subside.

Harbor Master Glenda Linn

January is the super busy month,

not only for me, but for our newly elected officers,

as well! New Year's Eve was a good crowd and a

lot of fun. The month of January brought in a couple

cruise-ins, big crowd and lots of boats from Rich-

mond Yacht Club and on the 21st the annual OYC

Crab Feed!

Slip data is still the same. All full except the side

tie, #26. The same with the lockers & containers, all

full. We have 4 on our waiting list for a slip , one

slip switch, and 8 on the live aboard waiting list.

I want to say thank you to Ted Hawkins, as over the

last 2 months he gave a rejuvenation to our lawns,

and with all these rains they are looking fabulous!

He also worked on the sprinkler systems, sprayed

weeds, and he had fixed the hole behind the bar.

I want to extend my thanks to Bob Carpaneto, also.

On many different occasions, he has helped me get

all the bar bottles out to the dumpsters. When those

bottles pile up in the trays behind the bar, especially

after a busy weekend, they are very heavy to get out.

So again, another thanks to Bobby for sharing the

load!!

With all these heavy rains, boat owners in slips take

extra precaution that your boat is sealed up well and

all lines solid and securely tied.

Our next dinner meeting is Feb 10th and following

that is our own PSPYC Crab Feed on Feb 11th. I

hope we will have a great turn out this time!!

See everyone then!!

Who are these babies?

A couple of club members have hatched an idea for club fun involving baby pictures. Spring is coming along with all of nature’s young things and babies come to mind.

If you would like to participate, please send your baby picture to the Editor at [email protected] by end of February to appear in an upcoming issue.

PSPYC General Meeting Minutes January 13, 2017

Meeting called to order at 8:15 pm

Commodore: Paul Maheu

Paul wished everyone a happy new year. Starting

with a thank you to the galley staff.

Vice Commodore: Tonja Jackson

Tonja said she’s so looking forward to the challenge

of the galley and with all the help she’s going to

have it’s going to be a piece of cake.

Rear Commodore: Elaine King

Elaine said she’s had tons of help from Colleen

Fielding, Sybal Halbauer, Bob Carpaneto, Beb Skye,

Maggie Hutchins, John Purl, Chuck Lind, Paul Har-

ris, Paul Maheu, Paul Lagier, Lillian Maheu, and

Kelly Mack. Thanks to all of them. With all their

help its coming together.

Our next happy hour is on Jan 20 and Elaine is not

sure if she’s going to have a band or not. She will be

out of state for a week next month.

Also thanks to Tonja Jackson for all her hard work

and dedication as rear commodore in 2016.

There was a drawing for a gift basket and Paul Ma-

heu helped and drew the winning ticket: And the

Drawing for the basket goes to Paul Jaqua!

Port Captain: Chris Jannini

Chris said we have started off the New Year with the

BBQ pit being used tomorrow for the cruise in so we

will need to get that cleaned up.

Part of the Work Party we have lights in the ladies

shower room that need repair, lights in the laundry

room that need repair so anyone with electrical

knowledge would be helpful.

There’s lot’s to do with the lawn and the weeds

since we’ve had all the rain. He’s got a long list with

lots of stuff for work party projects.

Fleet Captain: Glen Bigelow

Glen said things haven’t changed much since the

January newsletter. In March we will have the St.

Patty’s day cruise out to San Rafael Yacht Club. In

May will be the salute to American Graffiti to the

Petaluma Yacht Club. He’s got feelers out to many

other Yacht Club’s and is waiting to hear back.

There will be a trip to Aeolian Yacht Club that we

also did last year and it was a great time and we

want to do it again this year.

Treasurer: Darrell Struck

Darrell said we have a few bucks left over and were

looking forward to 2017.

The board approved funds for getting the gate re-

paired so hopefully we will get that taken care of.

First Mates: Sue Proudfoot

Sue said they were working on getting their strategy

together for the things they want to work on this

coming year.

Thanks to Elaine King and the folks who helped get

the Christmas tree down. What should we do with

it? Burn it?

Paul Jaqua said there was a Christmas tree burning

on U-Tube from about 10 years ago.

Announcements:

Paul Maheu said in our last meeting he tried his best

to acknowledge everyone at the end of the year and

apologized directly to Sue for not acknowledging

her in the Change of Watch meeting. Paul went into

the kitchen and came out with a large bouquet of

flowers to thank her.

Tonja Jackson: We will have a crab feed on Jan 21.

$45 per person. It’s live crab. Then there will be our

Yacht Club Crab Feed on Feb 11.

Dave Stewart said that a former member, Jerry Pea-

cock had passed away. There will be a service on

January 29th at the Methodist church to remember

him.

Lillian Maheu: It really makes a difference if you

RSVP for dinners. If 37 RSVP and 45 show up

there’s no extra food. It really makes running the

galley a lot better and we can at least break even if

everyone takes the time to RSVP for the dinners.

Jim Koss: The computer doesn’t work in the bar.

There is no WI-FI on the docks. It’s never been done

professionally and it would really be helpful to have

Present: Treasurer Colleen Fielding, Sybal Hallbau-er, Earlene Lagier, Sue Proudfoot, Secretary Dolores Robinson, Beb Skye, Nancy Struck

Suzanne Statler will continue as Clothing Chairper-son.

The November 11, 2016 minutes were corrected: Capital Development Committee plans involve the Club bar floor, not renovation of the Club bar.

The minutes were approved as corrected.

Sue Proudfoot volunteered to report at the January 13 membership meeting and thank Elaine King, Colleen Fielding and Bob Carpaneto for removing the Club Christmas tree and ornaments.

Motion passed that Colleen Fielding will donate an artificial tree for the 2017 Christmas tree decorating event. Colleen suggested that in the future First Ma-tes designate specific members to remove the tree at the end of the Christmas season.

Future plans: barbecue with game activities; Friday potluck in July. Beb Skye will research Club calen-dar for dates that are available.

Next Club crab feed February 11. Sue Proudfoot will purchase baskets and various contents for raffle prizes at the Oakland Museum white elephant sale. Various prize items from past raffles are available in First Mates’ storage.

The meeting adjourned at 1740 hours.

Did you know? This event has been hosted annually at our club ever since the Oakland Yacht Club helped PSPYC recover from a violent storm that ripped the covers off our docks many years ago. The OYC spent considerable time and resources raising funds and providing labor to help us make repairs. That’s part of the reason this event drew seven past OYC commodores, and they can’t wait to come back next year. Thanks again OYC!

And the Rain Came From the Editor

In early January, our area made national news as weather fore-casters warned of an atmospheric river that blasted California with heavy rain and snow. According to NOAA, atmospheric rivers are long, narrow regions in the at-mosphere – like rivers in the sky, carrying an amount of water va-por roughly equivalent to the av-erage flow of water at the mouth of the Mississippi River. As the multiple inches if rain and multi-ple feet of snow hit the first full weekend in January, there were over 100 reports of flooding, flash flooding or landslides in California and Nevada in one 24 hour period.

As most of you learned by stay-ing tuned into the news, area riv-ers such as the Russian, Truckee, Merced, Napa, Consumnes, and parts of the Sacra-mento had all reached flood stage by mid-month. The California Department of Water Resources opened all gates of the Sacramento Weir on Jan 9 for the first time in 11 years, and area reservoir dams were releasing water from all gates. As of Jan 23rd, San Francisco has seen 9 inches of rain so far with more to come. High winds downed trees and power lines in many areas all month. A gust in the Sierra reached 173 mph on Jan. 8. Meanwhile, San Francis-co experienced a “king tide” on Jan 8th, which

flooded the Embarcadero. While the term ‘king tide’ isn’t a scientific term, it is used to describe an espe-cially high tide event.

The result is that already this year the state has re-ceived nearly a full season's worth of rain and snow. Sierra snowpack is now almost double the average for mid-January. Many reservoirs are now running well above average. The second largest reservoir in California, Lake Oroville, had an incredible increase

Atmospheric River Forecast on January 3, 2017

Page 11: It’s Crab Season · Glen Bigelow We had a pretty busy day for our first work party of 2017. The clouds parted and we actually had a pretty decent day to get work done. The Rhodes

from 789.40 feet to 820.67 feat in one weekend, an astonishing rise of 31.27 feet in two days. By mid-month, that lake is more than 100 feet higher than the month before.

Our little club was not immune to nature’s effects. On Jan 12th, our docks were floating higher than the walkways, and the channel was nearly backed up into the club’s lawn. A shocking site if you hap-pened to be around the club that day. There was a 7’+ tide and these pictures courtesy of Glen Bigelow and Elaine King were taken within a ½ hour of high tide.

After years of drought, we can all forget how intense our rains can be. Be sure to keep an eye on your boats, especially before and after a forecasted storm, and keep your lines, tarps, and fastenings secured.

Page 12: It’s Crab Season · Glen Bigelow We had a pretty busy day for our first work party of 2017. The clouds parted and we actually had a pretty decent day to get work done. The Rhodes

by Glen Bigelow from information provided by Paul Lagier.

This is the 8th installment of building Lodestone, the boat that Paul Lagier began in 2007. This installment covers the fabrication and installation of the cabin sole and bulkheads (aka floor and walls).

Building a Ferro-Cement Boat - Part 14 (See April 2016 Foghorn for Parts 1-4, May for

Parts 5-7, June for Parts 8-9, September for

Part 10, October for Part 11, December for

Part 12 and January 2017 for part 13)

In the right column, the bulkheads define the various living and working areas of the interior of the boat. Some actually separate one room from the other, while others simply pro-vide structural support for tables, seating, countertops, etc. In the top picture, these 3 bulkheads define the galley. The large one at the far end separates the galley form the engine room.

Above and below, the sole was framed with standard 2x4 fir studs and topped with 3/4" plywood. The waste tank (galvanized steel) and two water storage tanks were installed in the bilge prior to building the floor.

Below, Low bulkheads will be base of the seating area in the dining salon. Bulkhead in foreground will separate the dining area from the galley (kitchen). Bulkhead at far end separates the dining area from the head.

Below, looking forward from the engine room. The low bulk-heads in foreground will be base of fuel tank platforms. The large bulkheads in the foreground separate the engine room from the main salon.
