It is a privilege to live here.

We enjoy a high quality of life. What a special place southeastern Connecticut is, so rich in history, cul-ture, natural beauty and biological diversity. These elements give our region a strong sense of place. No wonder people travel here, move here, live here, stay to raise families here. This place has important stories to tell that connect us to our history, to nature and to the future.

My earliest childhood memories are of taking walks in the Old Mystic woods with my dad. From an early age, I developed a positive connection with nature, with life. I wanted to know all my neighbors - not just the kids but the trees, the birds, the wildfl owers - and to call them by name. For me, the notion of community has always included our non-human friends too.

I think because I grew up here and stayed here that I am driven to save the true charac-ter of this region. Everything connects to nature - culture, science, art, history, recreation, health, food. Our social and economic stability is built upon valuing and supporting local communities and traditions.

Successful conservation often takes a village, literally. To inspire people to take care of the Earth that sustains us, this is the real work. At the Nature Center, we have a local focus on global concerns, and these are vital concerns: the health of the soil, ecosys-tems, watersheds. All these affect the physical and economic health of human beings around the world.

Think globally, act locally has never been more true, or more important.

Why do you do it? We believe in the Nature Centers mission. The environment needs all the help it can get and hopefully our small contribution will make some difference. We enjoy working with the exceptional staff and constantly learn new things.

What’s the genesis of your wonderful support for the Nature Center? Knowing that all the animals we care for are ambassadors of the environment and are part of pro-grams that teach children (and adults) the importance of protecting it.

What’s your favorite part of what you do at DPNC?

Dori - encouraging a child or adult to touch a snake who either has never touched one before or is apprehensive to do so and watching the excitement and joy on their face.

Mike - Helping wildlife in need and exposing young and old to wildlife and the envi-ronment and hopefully encouraging an interest in protecting both.

MEET LORI EDWARDS

Lori Edwards is one of the Nature Center’s most beloved preschool teachers, but she is perhaps most famous as Mr. Wiggles’ “Mom.”

Mr. Wiggles, as most folks know, was a Virginia opossum that was orphaned as an infant and hand-raised by Lori. He grew quite a fan base as his babyhood and life were chronicled on the Center’s Facebook page. He was even a guest on the Better Connecticut television show and made fast friends with host Scott Haney. Mr. Wiggles became so comfortable with Lori and other humans that he was determined to be unreleasable, and he lived out his life comfortably, taking hikes with Lori through the woods behind her house. He passed away in his sleep just after Thanksgiving in 2015.

Lori took a few minutes recently to answer some questions for us!

Name: Lori Edwards Age: 46 Hometown: Gales Ferry

Where were you born and raised: Mystic

Education/degrees: American Montessori Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education

How long have you worked at DPNC: 6 years

What is your current position? Head Preschool Teacher & Animal Rehabilitator

What’s the best part about your job? The best part of my job is that every day I am able to make a difference in a child’s or animal’s life.

What’s the best part about the DPNC? The best part of DPNC is working with a group of people who are as dedicated to children, the community and the environment as I am. I’m proud to be part of this wonderful organization that is committed to all aspects of nature.

What do people ask you most often when they find out you work at a Nature Center? Most people ask about the animals that I work with and rehab. After I explain how I capture injured raptors, rehabilitate, and then release them back into the wild they want to know what our hours are at DPNC so they can come for a visit.

What surprises you about your job? It’s not really about my job but what surprises me the most is how many people still use rat poison to kill vermin. They don’t realize that often the poisoned animal is eaten by another species, such as owls or hawks, who also end up dying.

Favorite animal, plant, or … (and why): My favorite animal is the Virginia Opossum because they are so misunderstood, but I feel they are such special creatures. But I could be biased because I was lucky enough to have Mr.Wiggles consider me his mom.

Celebration of Michael Finkel’s new book“The Stranger in the Woods”

Sunday, March 12 2-4pm

Bank Square Books and DPNC partner to bring you the extraordinary story of the last true hermit. Christopher Knight, age 20, leaves his home in Massachusetts and disap-pears into the Maine wilderness. Christopher would not have a conversation with another human being until nearly three decades later when he was arrested for stealing food. Living in a tent even in winter, he survived by his wits and courage, developing ingenious ways to store food and water and to avoid freezing to death. However, he wasn’t very far from civilization at all; he broke into North Pond cot-tages for food, clothes, reading material, and other provisions, taking only what he needed and terrifying a community never able to solve the mysterious burglaries. In the wake of his arrest, people grapple with how much to blame Chris? How much to admire him? And what should be done with him, now that he’s been caught? This program will feature a book reading, book signing, and optional orienteering hike with a DPNC educator.

DPNC’s Jones honored for being a tenacious conservationist By Lee Howard Day staff writer November 15. 2016

Maggie Jones, winner of this year’s William Crawford Distinguished Service Award from the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut, was celebrated Tuesday night as a strong and tenacious woman with a passion for the outdoors nurtured in youth.

Several hundred people attended the award dinner at the Mystic Marriott in which Jones, executive director of the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, was honored for her years of conservation work and community service.

“Maggie’s biggest strength is the ability to surround herself with people who are really good at what they do,” said Craig Floyd, manager of DPNC’s Coogan Farm, according to a copy of his speech obtained before the dinner. “DPNC is truly a close-knit family — we celebrate with each other and support each other — this is what Maggie has built, a family that tends to its neighbors.”

Susan Funk, who was on the search committee that named Jones the nature center’s leader nearly a quarter century ago, said the Connecticut College graduate brought a rare range of skills to the job: artist, birder, conservationist, historian, manager and educator among them.

Funk, who spoke at Tuesday’s dinner but was interviewed about the nature center leader beforehand, said Jones is a leader who invites participation. She also knows how to navigate around the political sphere, Funk said, working toward resolutions rather than engaging in losing battles.

“Maggie is anything but static,” Funk said. “She’s about action, and she’s tenacious. She follows up and doesn’t give up easily.”

Along the way, she said, Jones has expanded the reach of what had been a largely local effort to engage growing numbers of people from throughout the region. The organization now supports not only Coogan Farm, but rehabilitation of hawks and owls, a preschool, classrooms and exhibitions, as well.

And Jones has advocated an interdisciplinary approach that includes art, history and heritage in her conservation efforts, Funk said, calling the nature center an exemplar in the region and beyond.

“She’s been such an incredible force in the community,” Funk said.

Floyd said he and Jones go way back, and he remembers her father, a family doctor who inspired the fledgling nature lover to explore the farms and woods around Old Mystic.

“Maggie is just as tough as her dad — try competing with her,” he joked.

Floyd recalled his cousin, Keith Williams, helped the Jones family build stonewalls until finally Maggie decided one day to build her own.

“That’s where she learned patience,” he said. “Working with stone, she became tough and strong but kind.”

He remembers Jones sledding from the top of a favorite local hill in Old Mystic near River Road down to a Baptist church more than a mile away, then walking back deter-minedly to do it again.

“That walk back up was part of what defines the athlete in Maggie Jones,” he said.

But inner drive isn’t all that energizes her, Floyd said. She also gets jazzed over what he called “neighborhood values.”
