InLondon,wealthyMargotMaryWendicehadabriefloveaffairwiththeAmericanwriterMarkHallidaywhileherhusbandandprofessionaltennisplayerTonyWendicewasonatennistour.Tonyquitsplayingtodedicatetohiswifeandfindsaregular job.Shedecidestogivehimasecondchancefortheirmarriage.WhenMarkarrivesfromAmericatovisitthecouple,Margottellshimthatshehaddestroyedallhislettersbutonethatwasstolen.Subsequentlyshe was blackmailed, but she had neverretrievedthestolenletter.Tonyarriveshome,claimsthatheneedstoworkandasksMargottogowithMarktothetheater.MeanwhileTonycallsCaptainLesgate(akaCharlesAlexanderSwannwhostudiedwithhimatcollege)andblackmailshimtomurderhiswife,sothathecaninheritherfortune.Butthereisnoperfectcrime,andthingsdonotworkasplanned.

TheheadoftheGreenManorsmentalasylumDr.MurchisonisretiringtobereplacedbyDr.Edwardes,afamouspsychiatrist.Edwardesarrivesand is immediatelyattracted to thebeautifulbutcoldDr.ConstancePetersen.However, it soon becomes apparent thatDr.Edwardesisinfactaparanoidamnesiacimpostor.HegoesontherunwithConstancewhotriestohelphisconditionandsolvethemystery of what happened to the real Dr.Edwardes.

ThedreamsequencewasdesignedbySalvadorDalí,andwasoriginallysupposedtorunfor20minutes.Itincludedascene

withDr.Petersoncoveredinants.Onlypartofitwasfilmed,andevenlessofitendedup

inthereleaseversion.Althoughthefilmisinblackandwhite,twoframeswherethegunshotgoesoffwhilepointedatthecameraaretintedred.
