God bless the people of our annual conference. We saw and heard some
great preaching, teaching and music. We met old
friends and made new ones. You, the people,
donated 3,078 pounds of potatoes and $898.25. The
potatoes went to Seagate Food Bank in Toledo to
hand out at Wednesday's Veteran's Food Give Away.
The money, Tater sent on to the Society of St.
Andrew to help provide tractor trailer loads of pota-
toes throughout this country to help feed the hungry.
Again, God bless you all.

Miriam Ruth (Jeffers) Wagner, 88, who died June 1. Miriam was preceded in death by her hus-band of 62 years, Rev. John Calvin Wagner, who was an Elder in the West Ohio Conference. serving in West Ohio - children, Rev. John Wagner (First United Methodist Church, Middletown) and Rev. Patricia Wagner (Maynard Avenue United Methodist Church). Miriam served alongside her husband at Green Camp (1956); First (Richwood, 1961); Interboard Council, Council on Ministries in the Ohio Conference (1966); and United Theo-logical Seminary (1973) before he retired in 1996. Let us remember in prayer those grieving the loss of their loved one, and remember in thanksgiving the life and ministry of:
Loving God,
In a world of senseless violence, our hearts cry out to you this day. Your beloved children are
being gunned down, beaten, abused, and ignored from Orlando to Chicago to even our local
communities. Some are named and remembered on the evening news; many are mourned
only by close friends and family. Our society no longer values each and every life. Instead we
disregard those we label and treat as “other.”
Forgive us, O God, for not valuing every life around us. Forgive us, O God, when we wound
with words of division and hatred. Comfort all who mourn. Guide us to find new ways of
managing our differences. Restrain us from returning violence with violence, even with our
words. Empower us to fight hate with love, indifference with compassion, violence with
peace, sorrow with hope. May we share the light and love of Christ wherever we may be and
with all we may encounter, in person and online. Guide us by your Spirit, O God. Amen.

LOCAL CHURCH AND COMMUNITY EVENTS Lifetree Café “Tell Me the Real Story: The Amazing Power of Honesty ” www.vanwertfirst.net
Whether honesty really is the best policy will be examined at Lifetree Café on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 7-8 pm.
This program features conversations surrounding whether telling the truth is best in all circumstances.
“There are times it’s obvious you should tell the truth,” said Lifetree Café national direc-tor, Craig Cable. “But in other situations, there seems to be some gray area. In this Life-tree program, participants will discuss when confessing the truth is best, and when it might not be—especially in relationships.”
During the program, Lifetree participants will be given the opportunity to share experi-ences of when honesty, or a lack of it, has impacted their lives.
Admission to the 60-minute event is free. Lifetree Café is located in The Bachwell Center for Music and Dance at 116 N. Washington Street, Van Wert, Ohio 45891. Please enter the handicap accessible entrance on Court Street. Park-ing is available in the courthouse lots.

WEST OHIO CONNECTION AND BEYOND A sobering reminder of the cost of hatred Message from Bishop Palmer Like all of you I awakened on Sunday morning June 12 to the tragic, devastating, jaw-dropping reports of yet another mass shooting. This time the worst one in recent American history. But this is not a competition or race that is worth winning. READ MORE http://www.westohioumc.org/conference/blog/sobering-reminder-cost-hatred.
You are invited to come out and hear Esther Gitobu as she visits congregations in West Ohio. Learn how the Methodist Church in Cambodia is sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a predominately Buddhist country teaming with young people. Hear how hope and new life continues to unfold in the after-math of the genocide in which 2 million Cam-bodians were killed. Be inspired, and reflect on how God is calling you to make a differ-ence. Make a difference.

RESOURCES We’re getting a new pastor! What can I do? A UMC.org Feature by Joe Iovino*
Related podcast episode: "Changing Pastors? It’s Going to be Okay" with Rev. Bob Kaylor is available at umc.org/podcasts
One Sunday during worship, you notice a visitor who looks vaguely familiar. Sud-denly the pastor invites her forward to address the congregation. Now you remem-
ber. She is your District Superintendent. Oh no! Why is she here?
A numbness overcomes you as you hear the words. Your pastor is leaving. In several weeks, he will move to a new church. The DS then promises to return soon to introduce you to your new pastor. United Methodist churches repeat this scene whenever elders are appointed to new churches.

Father’s Day has Methodist ties By Joey Butler*
Editor's Note: This story was originally published in 2010, the year often referenced as
the centennial of the first celebration of Father's Day. Information regarding the centen-
nial has been updated to reflect this.
To all you dads out there: While you're relaxing in your recliner and watching sports
on June 21, and your kids are on their best behavior to honor Father's Day, don't for-
get to thank a United Methodist.
That's right. Not one, but two United Methodist churches with the same name, oddly
enough can lay claim to originating the celebration of all things paternal.
