Fire Safety Tips for the Hurricane Season

During evacuations, the immediate need fortransportation and shelter of ten take priorityover fire safety. Evacuees focused uponescape should also remain mindful of firesafety by making a special effort to protectagainst acciential fire.

During the 2005 Hurricane Rit a evacuations,Texans experienced transport ation/vehicle-related fires. Vehicles often have highlyflammable padding materials, andemergency supplies, like bedding, arecombustible. To reduce the risk of fire, youshould:

1. Obey all restrictions regarding smokingand the use of open flame. Alwaysextinguish smoking materials in a safemethod and location.2. Ensure that vehicles used to transportpersons with medical conditions have able-bodied attendants and operators.3. Avoid spills and ignition sources whentransferring gasoline from one cont ainer toanother. When evacuees arrive at theirdestinations, they may overlook normal firesafety provisions that exist in their normalenvironment but may not be available in theirnew displaced or unfamiliar surroundings.

From the Texas Department of Insurance

When entering unfamiliar surroundings:1. Locate the closest fire extinguisher .2. Avoid over crowding in any building orlocation.3. Locate two exits and ensure they areunlocked and not blocked.

Avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning!

A number of people affected by hurricanesKatrina, Rita and Ike became sick and diedfrom carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

CO, an odorless, colorless gas that cancause sudden illness and death, is found incombustion fumes produced by the smallgasoline engines that power port ablegenerators and pressure washers. Carbonmonoxide from these sources can build up inenclosed or semi-enclosed spaces, poisoning the people and animals thatbreathe it.

Never use generators, grills, camp stoves, orother gasoline, propane, natural gas, orcharcoal-burning devices inside your home, basement, garage, or camper—or evenoutside near an open window.

A TRIBUTE TO (HENRY) HANK PICKLO

On July 10, 2010, we found that we had lost a friend and long time resident in W aterwood. Since he did not have amemorial we decided we would pay tribute to him here.

Hank grew up in Pennsylvania, and moved to Houston. He worked for a comp any that applied protective coatings andwaterproofing to buildings. During that time, one of his major projects was in the building of the Astrodome. Hank met hiswife Ethel during this time and moved to W aterwood when they retired in 1985.

He was a very private person. He liked to work with wood and made a lot of things in his workshop in the garage. He alsowas an avid gardener and had a garden every year. He liked to stay busy, so helped Wally Swanson and Glenda when theyadded on to their home. He also was a gourmet cook and invited friends for dinner . He loved to visit and could talk aboutmany different subjects and things he had done. He was a joy to be around.

He played golf and even adopted the first hole, filled in divot s and watered the green. He even made a putting greenbeside his house and did a lot of practicing there. He helped in making the marble plaque that was in the horseshoe shapedbushes in front of the four flag posts at the back of the club. When the club closed, it was moved and placed between thetenth tee box and eighteenth green. His fondest memory in golf was; he said, "I’ve never had a hole-in-one, but had madea double eagle at Memorial Park”.

Hank worked with the Waterwood Volunteer Fire Department when Reece Harper lived here. Also, he was on the committeefor the community fundraiser and grants to help provide needed equipment for the fire department. He served as a directoron the Waterwood Mud District for the last ten years, and contributed a lot of ideas to help it be efficient to our neighborhood. He will be sorely missed.

God Bless you Hank

WANT TO BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR?

GOT A BARKING DOG?

There is a solution! In fact, several.

Waterwood is home to many dogs. There are wonderful (spoiled) dogs that getpushed around in a carriage. Others have their own “golf cart limo” driven by theirowner. Others walk around Waterwood on their own. Some are on leases andsome are not. Those not on leases are either accompanied by their owner or NOT.

Those accompanied by their owner are not a problem. The best example of thatis a dog on Doral (which will remain nameless) that is under strict voice commandand is a model dog. A hint (his namesake wears a mask (not unlike a racoon’s face) and steals from others).

The problem dogs are the ones that destroy the tranquility and peacefulnes of Waterwood by barking. The most obvious violators are on the golf course, butothers have been appearing on Waterfront properties as well.

To be a good neighbor you may go to any of the following sites: (Just to be educated about the problem, or to order something to fix the problem).
