Dear Parents, The air may be frigid and the lawns may be snow covered, but the climate in YBH General Studies can be reliably described as warm and invigorating. A few days ago, I took a walk through each GS class and I observed a high level of student engagement in learning and instruction that was aligned with the needs of each child. Teachers have redesigned the physical layout of their rooms to encourage and facilitate collaborative learning and small group work. Gone are the grid style arrange-ments of desks in the elementary school that isolate students. Instead, students work in pairs, small groups or "teams". Teachers have also created areas in the room where students cluster together on a rug in close proximity to the teacher or rotate through different centers of learning in the classroom. Under the direction of Rabbi Wieder, our Science Coordinator, several classes are now the proud "parents" of various reptiles and mammals, including a turtle, hamster and tadpoles. Our 4B class is presently research-ing a "pet" that they will adopt, care for and study. Our 4G classes recently went to the Liberty Science Center to explore and experi-ence exhibits that relate to their science units of study. A number of grades will be starting a novel that will be read together as a class. Students will focus on comprehension strategies and text structure as they delve into the litera-ture. During small group instruction using the Guided Reading model, our elementary school teachers have had the opportunity to work closely on vocabulary and comprehen-sion skills with leveled readers.

Our Teacher Coach, Mrs. Hellmann, continues to lead workshops with our faculty and mentors individual teachers. Our MS LA and SS classes will be working together on several writing projects and research papers. At a recent middle school faculty meeting, our Girls' Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Sober, led a workshop on writing across the curriculum based on a course she recently took at the prestigious Windward School in White Plains. The approach she shared emphasizes how to teach students to write clear, linguistically complex sentences, paragraphs and longer compositions. All classes have begun regular visits to our school library to borrow books. They will also be using both our library and computer lab for various research projects and assignments. Several classes have hosted “Publishing Parties” during which parents enjoyed the opportunity to listen to students present original writing to a “real” audience. These “parties” were excellent opportunities for students to practice their oratory skills. Stay tuned for additional school wide General Studies co-curricular programs planned for the spring! With Tu B’Shevat having arrived and Purim just around the corner, we eagerly anticipate the harbingers of spring. Until then, YBH students continue to thrive and blossom in the “sunny” and warm climate of our special Yeshiva. Natalie Lichtman, General Studies Principal

Dear Parents and Grandparents, On March 11, 2015, YBH will be holding its 70th Annual Dinner at Cong. Keter Torah in Teaneck, New Jersey. This gala dinner will be an evening of celebration as we pay tribute to a group of individuals whose service to YBH and the entire Jewish community has left an impact on many. The guests of honor are Rabbi Aryeh and Batya Mandel, who have been pillars of the YBH family and Passaic community since their arrival to the neighborhood in 2000. Aryeh has been Chairman of the YBH Board since 2007 and Batya has been active in a variety of functions. YBH is very grateful to be honor Aryeh and Batya as the guests of honor as a small token of appreciation for all the effort that they have put into the yeshiva. Rabbi Zev and Chani Karpel are recipients of this year's Kesser Shem Tov Award. In addition to being a proud mother of three children at YBH, Chani works at YBH as the early childhood department’s school psychologist. The Karpels are champions of the core values of YBH and specifically appreciate the high quality of chinuch the school offers students, our focus on helping each child grow individually and the emphasis on derech eretz and ahavas haTorah. YBH considers itself very fortunate to have such wonderful role models as part of our parent body and is delighted to honor both Zev and Chani with the Kesser Shem Tov Award. Morah Shoshanah Meyersdorf is this year's recipient of the Chinuch Award. We are fortunate to have Morah Shoshanah as a Pre-1A teacher since 2005. From the moment she arrived at YBH, her distinctive enthusiasm, warmth and love for her students was enveloping and allowed her to successfully impart middos tovos, Ahavas Yisroel and Eretz Yisrael, though various tools of multi-faceted learning. It is mostly due to extraordinary educators such as Morah Shoshanah that YBH has continued to grow and thrive as a premier yeshiva within the Passaic/Clifton community. We are thankful and thrilled to honor her with this year’s Teacher of the Year. YBH has long been a source of strength for the Passaic–Clifton community, providing quality education for generations of children. Our beautiful campus has enabled us to attain even higher goals, as we continue to go, with Hashem’s help, m’chayil el chayil. We have relied on the support of all our friends in the past; today we find ourselves in need of that support more than ever. Please join us in recognizing these outstanding honorees and our extraordinary yeshiva. We invite you to pay tribute to our honorees and to YBH, by placing an ad in the journal and joining us at the dinner. We look forward to sharing this very special evening with you. CONDOLENCES TO

Mrs. Etana Kamara on the loss of her mother

Dear Parents, Welcome back to all! While we may have re-turned from mid winter break last week, this is the first boys newsletter with which to formally welcome you all back. Aside from the couple of snowstorms that de-layed the engines from fully revving up and running, our enthusi-asm and drive for a suc-cessful new term is as strong as ever and we picked up right where we left off. On the last day before vacation, all grades enjoyed a visual presenta-tion by Avichai Koch, a shomer shemittah farmer who lives on Moshav Tekuma in the Negev of Israel, just a few miles from the Gaza border. He and his family person-ally experience the z’chus, as well as the challenge of, complete compliance to the mitzvah of shemittah. He absolutely blew away the students with his re-markable dedication to the mitzvah and of his life story under constant threat of rocket fire near the Gaza border. One of the most poignant aspects of his message was the fact that his keeping shemittah resulted from his twelve year old son’s request that he do so.

The students came away with an appreciation for Eretz Yisrael and for the sacrifices of our Giborai Koach - those mighty farmers who observe the special mitzvah of shemittah.

For many weeks, culmi-nating with the end of winter break, talmidim have been learning out-side of school as part of our annual Hasmadah program. Once again, the participation level has been extraordinary and we are so proud of the effort and enthusiasm dis-played. We are looking forward to rewarding them with exciting snow tubing or bowling trips. Details will be sent home with your sons. Finally, Tu B’Shvat was celebrated in a meaningful and educational way. After weeks of much prac-tice and preparation, grades 2-5 competed in a Brachos Bee, including a skit by Rabbi Finkel and Rabbi Bacharach.

The Brachos Bee winners are: Akiva Muehlgay -2B Yechiel Segal-2B Menachem Compart-3B Yehuda Kreitman-4B & Chaim Rothberger-5B

Congratulations to all the participants for their work and for all the new information they learned. Looking forward to sharing more nachas in the future.

Mrs. Paul’s Fifth Grade Class: The fifth grade boys class is divided into four reading groups for guided reading throughout the week. Recently the leveled readers were about the ocean and sea creatures. The most recent social studies newsletter covered the triangle trade, the slave trade was part of a three sided exchange between Africa, the American colo-nies and the Caribbean. We were surprised to learn that the United States only received 5% of the African slaves. In science the boys are working in cooperative groups to cre-ate posters on a spaced themed topic. The boys created a bibliography of the sources they used and have shown great improvement in working independently. Rabbi Schonfeld’s Kitah Ches: It's been a busy week for the eighth grade, in between the snow storms. We started the second perek of makos in gemara and have begun planning our Purim play that will be performed before Purim. Rabbi Rajchgod’s Kitah Vav: Mazel Tov to the sixth graders on our siyum on Parshas Shmini. This is a long parsha and we learned many new things, from the signs of kosher and non-kosher animals, to some of the halachos of tumah. We celebrated with a major siyum last Friday. Congratulations to Team Rimon on winning Wartime II, where we spent two days reviewing over two blatt of gemara. Speaking of gemara, we are clos-ing in on the end of perek HaKones, a major accomplish-ment!! The boys are all learning beautifully. Mrs. Weissman’s Third Grade Class: The boys in 3B are learning a great deal. We are focusing on the multiplication facts and are becoming master multi-pliers really quickly! When we learn a new table, we have multiplication centers the next day to review the facts. These centers include making flashcards, drilling each other, doing fun sheets, and playing interactive math games. Check out our creative multiplication arrays hanging in the hallway. In social studies, we’ve been learning differ-ent geographical terms. The boys are able to locate the continents, oceans, and exact locations on a globe using the lines of latitude and longitude. We are culminating this unit with a creative portfolio called a lapbook. This is a col-lection of graphic organizers, foldables, mini books, and interactive maps that cover detailed information about our central topic. The boys are excited to bring their finished projects home!

A Peek Into Our Week ECD HIGHLIGHTS

Morah Shoshanah’s Pre 1A-M performed their Tu Bishvat play, in honor of Eretz Yisrael, on Tu Bishvat. The children showed their kavod in another way as well.

They made a giant todah card for our chayalim, which was hand delivered to them by Azriel Price, at Me’arat Hamachpela,

when he and his family went to Eretz Yisrael during winter break. Our yeladim decorated Israeli flags which we glued to the card

and then we posed with the card, which also had the tefillah for the chayalim on it.

Kol Hakavod L’Tzahal and to the Pre 1A-M yeladim!

Mrs. Skerett’s First Grade Class: What is changing in our world? Everything! In Unit three, we will be reading about and discussing changes in our everyday lives. We will explore changes that happen in our own neighborhood and how it’s important to work together to make it a better place. We will discover that not everyone grows and changes at the same time and that we need to be respectful of our differences. We will also identify and compare and contrast the many changes that take place in plants, animals, and nature. The goal of spelling is for children to transfer their knowledge of words into their everyday writing. The students have been taking a closer look at spelling patterns, long vowels, contractions, and suffixes and have the opportunity to incorporate these types of words into their daily reading and writing. Please celebrate their new learning with your children as they become observant readers, writers, and spellers. As a device for developing counting skills, we will be starting Chapter 6 in the next few days where we will learn to count by twos, fives, and tens as well as model, read and write numbers all the way to 120! Mr. Avard’s Middle School Language Arts Class: The eighth grade boys are working on their individual yearbook pages with the theme of “things I’m grateful for…”. One of the students wrote that he’s grateful for the education he gets at YBH and for his older brother, a former YBH student, who is his role model and from whom he has learned many things, including sporting activities.
