Cabramatta Confidential Issue No:44

· I will start the report highlighting the Club’s financial trading period for the nine months year to date as of 31st December 2014. A brief overview of our bottom line figure indicates that income is up $78,765 on last year and expenses are down $48,619 on last year, so a healthy profit should be able to be posted (fingers crossed) by the end of March 2015.

I would very much like to thank Treasurer Will Kourieh for the support he has given me in turning our previous flat 18 months trade around.

The Board and I clearly know that our job has only just begun in regards to improving standards in our Club that will not only please current patrons, but more importantly attract potential new patrons to what we will be able to offer.

I had the pleasure of watching our Major Pennant Team play at home against Monash in round one. What a performance, 6 ½ to ½ is a great start to what will be a rebuilding year. This team from last year was without the likes of nine time Club Champion Mick Nagy (family commitments), Peter Stojanovski (now Professional), Owen Woodley (now Professional), Troy Norris (family commitments) and from the previous year Josh Ingram (now Professional).

With those players unavailable the opportunity was taken by both hands by Mark Conrades (welcome back), Cameron Glenday & Dylan Marsh.

Congratulations are also in order for our Ladies Pennant Team that started their season off very impressively, as have our Mixed Pennant Team who are currently in there punching, trying to win their Division.

Members and patrons might have noticed painting being carried out to both inside and outside the Clubhouse, this will continue over the next month or so to restore a suitable presentation of our Clubhouse.

Course Superintendent Steve Kazurinsky will be communicating with Members regarding current and future Course projects. A current explanation of our greens should make members aware of the difficulties we face in the current humid conditions as well as the actions we have taken to redeem the problem.

The January 2015 Board Meeting resulted in a decision to increase Members Full Membership by $55 or approximately $1 per week to $1,045. The other area to be identified is that of cart storage, this has been increased to $550 inclusive of GST and also inclusive of compulsory insurance of approximately $120.

I was very happy to see at least a dozen youngsters on our 17th tee practice facility last Friday. For just $4 a junior can be tutored by Club Professional Matt Dowd with the use of a bucket of balls on both the driving range, chipping practice to the 18th and putting practice on our putting green.

Something else that is starting in March 2015 is the Coca Cola Challenge that is being run in conjunction with our current Monday competition. The winner and runner up of each week’s individual competition will be invited back in October 2015 to play off for a weekend for two at Royal Pines Queensland to view the Australian PGA from the luxury of the Coca Cola corporate suite, all accommodation and airfares included. For more information just ask the office or the Pro Shop.

As always, enjoy your golf & good health.

From the Captain

Well we have started our Pennant season with a bang.

The Major Pennants played their first game against Monash at Cabra on Sunday, 8th February, achieving a great result 6½ to ½. Cameron Glenday one of our juniors was elevated to the Majors as a reserve and he acquitted himself admirably. Tom Dunkin played extremely well in the 1 position and came away with a square. Welcome to Dylan Marsh & Jace Kelly the newbie’s. Also welcome back Mark Conrades, 15 years is a long break, but we are glad you are back. Well done to all my fellow team mates “job done”. The Ladies Major Pennant team played Stonecutters Ridge at Ryde Parramatta and won 3/2 a great result. On the way to defending their title.

The Mixed Pennants are playing well and are holding their own with a square to Lynwood at Lynwood, another great effort.

The Senior Pennants have also kicked off with Cabra hosting the first game on Tuesday, 10 th February.

Lone Wolf K.O. Final was contested between Dennis Roberts and Ron McMah – Congratulations to Dennis Roberts winning 2/1, see you both at Presentation night.

The Golden Wattle Cup was won by Theo Mateo's (14) with a 67nett. Congratulations, see you at Presentation night.

Saturday 28th February is a medal round but also the qualifying round for the Junior Match play, top 4 junior players to qualify. Also to make up the medal rounds the medal for March will be played on Saturday, 14th March. Last but not least for March the Cock O Walk qualifying round is Saturday, 21st March.

As for what’s happening around the course: Firstly, a big thank you to Alan Lucas for donating of your time in painting the sand and garbage bins and helping to pick up sticks in the past couple of weeks.

The fairways were cored for the first time in Cabra’s history. A special thanks to Vice Captain Brendan Hardy for donating his time in assisting me coring the fairways.

Cabra were fortunate to receive a grant to improve the gully beside the 3rd tee. (2nd Fairway gully). This work has now started and should see a lot of clearing and pruning.

Work will be concentrated on the improving of bunkers around the course, repair of exit/entry to paths and maintaining trees through the winter months.

Coring of the greens has been scheduled for Sunday, 15th March after the competition has gone through (no social play after 12.00pm).

I ask all members to help, please pick up 2 sticks every time you play and deposit in the bin. Example: 3 games per week x 52 weeks x 850 members equals 265,200 fewer sticks on course. Thanks in advance.

Remember I am always available to speak to if you have any questions.

When: 27st April, 2015 Location : Cabramatta Golf Club Time : 12.30pm to 5.00pm Cost : FREE How to book : Click on ‘book now’ on your golf pro website OR phone 9602 1516. INNOVATIVE FITTING TOOLS PING’s fitting programs are a continuation of Karsten Solheim’s pioneering work in cus-tom fitting. Participants in the programs have been certified by PING to provide the most comprehensive and accurate fittings available. Authorized fitters rely on a variety of tools, including the interchangeable drivers and irons offered in the Advanced Fitting System (AFS), to ensure your clubs match your individual needs. Our most recent tech-nology includes the Flight Motion wireless driver-fitting tool and the iPING Putter App, two more innovations that give you the opportunity to make sure every club is custom fit and custom built.

G30rown turbulators in the 460cc head help generate greater club head speed and ball velocity for consistently longer drives that find the fairway. The new T9S face material is strong, lightweight and thin, optimizing face deflec-tion for even higher ball speeds and longer drives. With Trajectory Tuning+ Technology, you can fine-tune launch conditions using five settings and 2 full degrees of loft adjustability.

G30Progressive lengths and lofts and a thin face opti-mize launch conditions and generate faster ball speeds, ensuring maximum distance and control to consistently knock the ball close. The Custom Tuning Port (CTP) contributes to a solid feel and a low-back CG for launching the ball high and straight. Slightly longer heads also boost MOI for improved off-centre performance, and a new sole design promotes solid contact.

“Golf is a puzzle without an answer. I’ve played the game for 50 years and I still

haven’t the slightest idea of how to play.” – Gary Player

News from the Green Staff

Well it’s fair to say that we’ve had a tough summer and it’s clear to see that our greens have struggled over the past few months. This has resulted in some thin greens, and various green having patches replaced.

What caused this to happen, well I’ll try to explain it as clear as I can. Every summer we have high temperatures and generally speaking, long dry summers. But this year we have seen extremes in humidity, which contributes heavily to disease. The greens need regular water in those hot periods, which is fine, but when added to the high humidity, we create the ideal environment for disease. We spray greens on a regular basis for disease, but sometimes it’s unavoidable and we see disease take hold. Generally speaking, in Sydney in summer golf greens suffer from a root disease called Pythium. Our greens were diagnosed with Take All Patch in the root zone and Curvularia Leaf Spot which would have attacked once the plant was under stress.

Now generally speaking we don’t have a strong root system anyway, so when a root disease is present, our greens can suffer greatly. When what roots we have are weakened by the disease, then the surface of the green dries out very easily as it has no support. This happened to our greens over 1 weekend, it can happen that quickly, they look fine on Friday and then by Monday they are under stress. The greens then take quite some time to recover as you need to control the disease outbreak and then try to promote new growth, which when the green have no or little roots, is extremely hard to do and is a slow process. Our greens are also quite old, with heavy, compacted soils that don’t drain as well as a sand profile green would, thus promoting disease as well.

It was also noted that when we did replace the turf on some greens (11th, 8

th, 5

th, 12

th) the profile

was full of tree roots, which in turn compete for any available moisture, allowing the greens to dry more than they usually would. Hopefully the greens continue to improve as we look forward to renovation in mid-March and returning the greens to a healthy strong surface. Prior to next summer we will focus on creating a strong healthy root system, as well as creating a better environment around some of the greens, to assist us through that difficult period.

So I hope I have cleared a few things up and filled in a few blanks. If you ever have any question, please feel free to give me a call or drop in at our shed and have a chat.

Another satisfactory financial year with an operating surplus of £3,071,

with an increase in revenue from competition fees, green fees and mem-

This was a milestone year in the Club’s history with the completion of extensive alterations and addi-

area. The official opening was performed by Mr. E. G. Whitlam, the Federal Member for Cabramatta

on 29th November 1958.

The highlight of the golfing year was the winning of the NSWGA “B” Pennant. This was the first such

win in the Club’s history. The players were: R M Watson (Capt), D Sharp, J Springall, M Reid, A Pilon, C

Wife's Diary:

Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset that I was a bit late, but he made no comment about it. Conversation wasn't flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn't say much.

I asked him what was wrong. He said, "Nothing." I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can't explain his behaviour. I don't know why he didn't say, "I love you, too."

When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV. He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep; I cried. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster!

Husband's Diary:

A two-foot putt..........who the hell misses a two-foot putt?

Vices

A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby

-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner. The man took out

his wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked,

"If I give you this money, will you buy some booze with it instead of dinner?"

"No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied.

"Will you spend this on green fees at a golf course instead of food?" the man asked.

"Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless man. "I haven't played golf in 20 years!"

"Well," said the man, "I'm not going to give you money. Instead, I'm going to take you

home for a hot shower and a terrific dinner cooked by my wife."

The homeless man was astounded. "Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that?”

The Golfers Dilemma

It's the club championships and you and your opponent reach the 18th all square. You smash your drive dead centre 250m. He pushes his well right into the trees.

You walk up and help him look for a few minutes then he says "Go and take your second while I keep looking. If I can't find it I'll go back to the tee and replay."

You take your next shot and it's a good one leaving you 6 feet from the hole. Just as it lands you hear "Found it" from amongst the trees. Next moment the ball comes sailing out of the woods and finishes inches from the hole!

Here is the dilemma. Do you accept the shot and try and match his birdie or do you pull his ball out of your pocket

and confront the cheating bastard?

Two old Golfers

A couple of old guys were playing golf when one mentioned that he was going to go to

Dr. Smith for a new set of dentures in the morning.

His elderly buddy remarked that he too had gone to the very same dentist two years be-

fore.

"Is that so?", asked the first old guy. "Did he do a good job?"

The second oldster replied, "Well, I was on the golf course yesterday when a guy on the

next fairway hooked a shot. The ball must have been going at least 200 mph when it

smacked me right in the nuts."

The first old guy was confused and asked, "What the hell does that have to do with your

dentures?"

"It was the first time in two years my teeth didn't hurt!"
