FEATURE PUZZLESYMBOLS KEY

The Brainstorm pages throughout Quick Thinking are there to provide you with a

variety of puzzles to exercise different aspects of your mind. As well as exercising

your mind they’re entertaining and fun, not hard work.

HOW TO SOLVE – Safecracker

To open the safe, all 20 of the buttons must

be pressed in the correct order (which is

indicated by the numbers and directions

on the buttons eg 2D = Two Down) before

the ‘open’ button is pressed. What is the

first button pressed in your sequence?

(See pages 19, 35, 51 and 67).

On pages 19, 35, 51 and 67 a single

Brainstorm puzzle can be found; the same

type of puzzle will appear on each of the four

pages so you will be able to set yourself the

challenge of improving each time you solve.

Beside each of the puzzles on the

Brainstorm pages you will see an

umbrella symbol. These symbols

represent the puzzle’s level of

diffi culty. See the key below:

BREEZE (easy)Have a go at these puzzles

for a quick fi x.

GALE (medium)Why not try these puzzles for a

slightly more taxing challenge.

TYPHOON (hard)Challenge your mind with these

trickier puzzles for a great

brain workout.

NB: We have added a few quirky footnotes here and there just for fun.

Hello and welcome to your new issue…If you’re a newcomer to the world of puzzles then

I hope you fi nd the magazine enjoyable and

stimulating. Likewise, if you are skilled at sudoku,

an ace at arrowords and a wizard when it comes

to wordsearchs, what do you think of the variety

of other puzzles in Quick Thinking? Please do

drop us a line, we’re always keen to hear from

our readers. Plus, when you’ve done your

puzzles workout for the day, don’t forget to enter

The Big PictureHere are two scenes of the same fancy dress party, in which fi ve of the revellers have

moved from the dance fl oor to the bar.

They are recognisable by virtue of certain items of attire or accessories, but – be careful –

these items are not necessarily worn or carried in exactly the same way each time.

Who are the fi ve?

Try solving this little logical problem in your head before putting pen to paper.

Three friends have booked a day at the races. From the information given, work out the name of the person, which horse each person placed a bet on and the amount of winnings each person took home.

Deborah had luck on her side as she took home the most amount of winnings – she won more than Julia who took home £50. Arctic Orchid provided one of the friends with £20 winnings. Georgina wasn’t the person who placed a bet on Red Whiskey. £400 was not achieved with the bet that was placed on Seacracker.

in a row or column tells you how many cells in that row or

column must be shaded. The second number in a row or

column indicates the number of shaded blocks in that

row or column.

A block consists of one or more shaded cells. Thus 5 3

means five shaded cells grouped in three blocks. There

must be at least one empty cell between shaded blocks.

All cells in any inner shape must have the same colour;

either they are all shaded, or they are all white.

CLUE WORD SCORE

Steal the Scene

Word Sleuth

Study the scene below for two minutes. The grid placed over the picture allows you to

form smaller chunks within the larger picture. Turn over to page 46 to continue the puzzle.

Use your powers of deduction to work out our four-

letter mystery word. The four different letters in the

mystery word can be worked out by comparing the

scores of the clue words. Every letter in a clue word

that is in the mystery word is scored with a circle,

black if the letter is in the correct place, red if it isn’t.

So, for example, NODE shares two letters with our

mystery word, but only one is in the correct position.

Steal the SceneCan you write the number of each of these listed elements of the picture

in the correct square of the grid?

KakuroSimple addition and a bit

of logical thinking will solve

this one. You must write a

digit in each white square

so that the digits in each

block add up to the total

in the box above or to the

left. 1-9 are the only digits

to use and, although you

may find a digit repeated

in a row or column, it must

not be repeated in the

same block. We’ve filled

in one block for you.

apply. Place a digit from 1-9

in each empty square so

that each row, column and

must add up to the number

in the top corner of that box.

No digit can be repeated

within an inner shape.
